[Fog rolls into the town of Samara – another cool autumn day, the sky murky and the tress shedding their leaves. The nights are longer now, the moon hanging low in the sky – and that can only mean one thing: stirrings. With the darkness creeps the dangers. You’ve likely heard those whispers all your life – those murmurs of caution, of danger, of otherness. Be mindful not to step out into the shadows for too long and risk losing yourself entirely.

The little town of Samara might appear quiet at first, unassuming, gentle even – a far outpost and a far cry from the Leridae kingdom’s capital. But it isn’t too far-flung from there, although hidden away in its own little haven, the trees growing closer and closer to its city lines with every passing year. No, this town is not as unassuming as it might seem. You might have grown up here – you’d know as much. Or perhaps you were drawn here for the same reason so many others have been drawn here:

Here in Samara, the rumors are simply that – just rumors. After all, who would ever think that vampires would prey upon such an unassuming, quiet town. But those who whisper the rumors might just shake their heads, looking out towards the forest, towards those darkened alleyways between the old, rickety town. Vampires are one thing. Hunters are another. And Samara has long since been the established epicenter of hunter activity – their meeting ground, so to speak, their headquarters. The hunters, of course, are branches of factions, individualistic in some ways and community-based in others. There is no set leader but there are clans within those hunters, those who strive for certain aspects of the hunter code – and others who operate well outside the set parameters of that.

This place has always been quiet, despite the heavy hunter presence. Few vampires risk staying too close within this town simply because of the danger to them. For years now, decades and decades, the hunters and the vampires have been at odds. Recently, these fights and tensions have only grown more devastating, with loses on both sides – tearing friends and families apart. The hunters hold pride in their abilities and the vampires, secretive and hidden, search for a means to survive in a world that rejects them. Or, perhaps, there are those few who seek the living for the sport of it. Just as there are hunters who seek to kill for the sport. Each side has had its demons and its loses.

And in this, the sleepy little town of Samara is mired with one rumor that just keeps being whispered again and again: that Queen Anne of Leridae is coming – or is already here, as the rumors indicate. Rumors speculate to her purpose – many assume that it’s her wish to form a formal alliance with the hunter factions. Others aren’t so sure. A few more believe that the rumors are just that: rumors. What purpose would a queen have to visiting this quiet little town where absolutely nothing ever happens ever at all? What purpose could such a queen have to coming to a town known for its hunter populace and devastating vampire attacks? Will peace come at last?

Despite this, the large meeting hall at the center of town is undergoing some sprucing up, some redecorating. There’s a grand ball planned, set to be open to the public and the higher-ranking hunter guilds within the next few days. That seems indication enough that something important is underway – or, at the very least, a royal visitor is imminent.

In the end, though, this quiet little town is certainly just meant to be quiet… But with the promise of Queen Anne’s arrival, there’s a new flurry of preparations: decorations everywhere, preparing housing for guests, trying to clean up the streets – and trying, so desperately, not to be bitten when the moon is high. And with the rumors of Queen Anne’s arrival come all the other new arrivals, seeking different desires: to join the hunters? To escape hunters in other regions? To find lost friends? To try to meet royalty? To find something to eat? To be turned? Or, perhaps you are more innocent in all this – just a bystander dragged into these strange happenings, torn between this conflict that seems to have no end.

Perhaps, then, there can be hope – and perhaps, someday, peace. Welcome to Samara.]

[Her mouth thins. She knows he has to do that, and she's worried about it out loud enough times already; she's not going to do it again. Certainly not out in the street. Internally fret about it? That, she is still going to do. Hunters devote their lives to finding vampires - they if anyone would be the first to notice something off about Bucky. But as she still has no counter-argument to "and it won't be more risky to suddenly stop asking them about vampires?", internal fretting it is.]

As usual, in other words? [There's no "all's well" on the vampire front these days. Only "well, it hasn't gotten worse than usual".

A side street, and then they're heading into that old café (Gu-- something, the sign says) that's been standing there abandoned for so long the thought of tearing it down doesn't seem to occur to anyone.]

[He's half prepared for her to voice those concerns once more, but perhaps he shouldn't be -- internal fretting is more her way, as it has always been. She keeps those things locked inside her mind, where they slowly torment her every moment of the day, he knows it all too well.]

Pretty much. [Not good, but not bad, either.

Once they're inside the café, he turns to stand in front of her, an eyebrow raised in a wordless question.]
So? I hope nothing's wrong.

[For all her internalising, Elsa can speak plainly and directly when she wants to. So:]

How long has it been since you last ate anything? [Mr "I'm Okay".]

[...That ended up sounding more accusatory than intended. A little softer:]
You can take care of yourself, I know that. But considering it still hasn't been that long, [how long does it take to truly adjust to being a vampire, really?] and with how hectic everything is now... I want to check in.

[With how much there is to do even she sometimes forgets to worry about him. Korra's easier in that respect; being more openly vulnerable.]

[..... ah.

At least now the fact why they're not having this conversation at the office makes sense. He winces, looks away -- they both know it's been a while.]

An' I appreciate that. You know I do. But... I'm fine. Not gonna fly off the handle if someone cuts their finger, I promise.

[Was that an answer? No, not really.]

There's a difference between "fine" and "not about to lose it", isn't there? Things are taxing enough right now even for someone who's completely well-fed and rested.

[Like her? Because Elsa is such a role model when it comes to taking care of herself when work is stressful.]

[.... of course she's going to push the issue. It wouldn't be Elsa if she didn't.

He sighs, but his expression softens just a little -- despite not wanting to make her worry, he can still be thankful that she does worry for him.]

... okay, you're right. Can't blame me for not wantin' to add more for you to worry. You're already doin' so much, Elsa... you shouldn't have to wonder whether I'm gonna be okay or not. I will. I can deal until this whole thing is done.

[She could say something about how it's hardly reducing her number of worries not to know how he's doing. She could say it's hardly an obligation, worrying over him, because of course she...

There are many things she could say.]

You know I-- ["can't help but worry about you". Especially when he never wants to let on when he's not doing well. A light shake of her head, before she changes the sentence to:]

You can deal, or you can eat and deal even better afterwards.

[No, you're already doing too much, he wants to say, but the truth of this? If something happens during the celebration? He needs to be at full strength. There's no contesting that.

A sigh.]

I know. I just hate that you gotta do this.

[She used to be as afraid of vampires as the next person; used to consider the very idea of drinking blood repulsive. To say she's become complete desensitised to it after a matter of weeks would be a lie, but, well... She smiles a little, wryly.]

You might be surprised how quickly you grow used to it, really. [As far as lightening the mood goes it's pretty half-hearted, but points for trying?]

[He can't help the small smile that plays on his lips at the words, at the clear attempt to lighten the situation, to make it less serious, somber. He huffs out a soft chuckle, shakes his head a little.]

You're really somethin', you know that?

[Not everyone would have given up the ideals of the town just to protect her bodyguard. Not everyone would shelter a broken vampire subject to experimentation, not when both those things could cost her the entire town. Sometimes, Bucky doesn't think he has the words to tell her just how grateful he is for everything Elsa has done for him, keeps doing for him.]

Don't start with that again, [she chides, but it's with a gentle tone as she removes one of her gloves.

Not everyone would do what she's doing, indeed. There's the factor of Bucky being - used to be? - more than just her bodyguard. How her sheltering him and Korra necessitates keeping the Hunters in the dark, effectively making it more difficult for them to do their job. Some mayor she is, who puts two people's well-being over her entire town, who goes against the ideals of the town and against her own duties.

Elsa is something all right, and she's not convinced that something is "a good person".]

Startin' implies I ever stopped.

[His smile turns softer, a teasing lilt in his tone, falling effortlessly into the sort of talk they had been used to, before everything. Elsa may not be convinced of her own inherent goodness, but that's alright -- Bucky's more than convinced for two.

His touch is gentle as he reaches to take her hand in his, squeezing it lightly, running his fingertips over her knuckles.]

You sure?

[He checks, every time.]

[Despite the lightness and ease of the conversation and despite how many times they've done this before, Elsa's hand twitches slightly when he touches her. She mentally berates herself for it. She knows he'd never hurt her, and the procedure itself is really not particularly painful - she knows that as well. What a irrational, unfounded reaction to a simple touch.

Hopefully he didn't notice. Maybe it's just that she's on edge with everything that's going on.]

I'm sure. It's fine. [She smiles slightly at him: it's brief and tight, but she hopes it's convincing. It is fine; she's just being silly.]
