Summary: Even in the ocean, it's possible to carve out a safe space.
There was a reason he'd refused to go to Atlantica before, and it was currently floating around eyeing him like he was her next meal. He knew the ocean was frequently a dangerous place, of course, the interplay of eat-or-be-eaten more desperate and aggressive than it was on land, but frankly he'd seen less nakedly covetous looks on hungry sharks.
"I was so devastated to hear of dear Maleficent's little setback," Ursula pouted, floating around him in large, languid circles, as if this was just a chance meeting by the coral beds - Riku knew better. "And after all she's done for the worlds, too. So sweet of you to run her errands while she's still getting back on her feet."
Riku felt his teeth set on edge. "I don't work for Maleficent anymore."
"What a pity," Ursula replied, slick as oil, and Riku realized she'd already been well aware of his termination of employment with the wicked faerie. "I don't suppose you're looking for employment now. You'd be quite charming as my escort."
Riku tried not to flinch, but his seagoing form was still unfamiliar enough to have its own ideas. Black stingray wings spreading from his sides fanned the water, drifting him back from the sea witch as his long whip-thin tail trailed up in an eddy of current. "No thanks," he managed to glower, but Ursula had already caught his moment of weakness and was advancing, black tentacles spreading out under her as if each sought its own prey. Riku backed up, hands itching for Way to Dawn - not yet, not yet...
Sand and water erupted between them and Riku shot downward over the coral to hide himself in it. His fingers met the cool surface of a shell and clung there, wing-fins fitting easily over the curved surface, and he only smiled and hung on when thin pale tentacles reached out to clasp him close.
The sand began to settle, and Ursula was clinging to a rock formation a hundred feet away, her hair and makeup sandblasted into utter disarray. "You- you-!" she spluttered.
Sephiroth, half his body hidden in the perfect spiral shell of a chambered nautilus with a wreath of tentacles circling his bare waist, gestured wordlessly, darkness calling his Masamune forth. The former general flicked the blade, as if to rid it of some dead monster's ichor, and turned his back on the witch.
"How dare-!" Ursula recovered quickly, Riku would give her that much, but Sephiroth's tentacles had positioned him perfectly to head off her charge. Now he summoned Way to Dawn and channeled his power through it: not his own dark flame but actual fire, streaking through water as if it were no more than misty air to wreath Ursula in a shimmer of heat and pain. She shrieked and screeched to a halt, tentacles beating the water as she clawed at her face. Though a powerful magic user in her own right, Ursula hadn't come prepared for prey who fought back, and wailed impotent rage as she squirted ink and fled.
"That," Sephiroth purred, still not looking, "will establish my territory if nothing else will."
"I think you're taking this 'nature red in tooth and tentacle' thing a little too much to heart," Riku snorted, relaxing back against him as the older man's tentacles twined around his waist. "...Can you do that too?" he thought to ask. "Squirt ink?"
Sephiroth cast a frankly nonplussed stare back over his shoulder; Riku grinned, and kept grinning while Sephiroth settled on the seabed and allowed more of his tentacles to venture forth from the lip of his shell. The body suited him somehow: pearlescent and wholly otherworldly, a relic from a forgotten time. Riku beat his wings lazily, pleased and amused at how Sephiroth's tentacles moved with him like kelp in a gentle current.
He stroked them where they formed a loose knot over his heart, on a whim, and Sephiroth hummed in surprised pleasure at the touch. It didn't surprise Riku that they were sensitive - they seemed so fragile over his skin, like gossamer. He twined his fingers through the ends and was rewarded with Sephiroth's rich purr.
"Do you want to...?" he hedged. Sephiroth wasn't always willing, after a fight.
Sephiroth hesitated, then nodded, his hair floating over Riku's shoulders. "We're safe here."
They turned to each other, clasped, kissed. The saltwater invaded both their mouths, their forms bumped and slid and clung, then Sephiroth got a firm grip on Riku with his tentacles and held him down against the sand. Freed of the effort of holding onto him, Riku grinned and slipped his hands into Sephiroth's shell; thin pale tendrils wrapped around his wrists, tugging him in further, and Sephiroth closed his eyes and allowed Riku to lead him astray.
They sported for hours, and neither saw another living soul.
