Prompt: Dragon Quest VIII, Marcello/Eight: Unlikely allies - "You can't help playing the hero, can you?"
Summary: After the battle on Neos, Eight catches up with Marcello.
"You can't help playing the hero, can you?"
Eight sheathed his sword and inclined his head toward the two gold golems slowly breaking apart on Neos' hot sands. "Lucky for you."
Marcello made a sound of disgust and turned away. "Did he send you after me? Not content with humiliating me once today?"
"Angelo's the least of your problems. He always has been." Eight strode after Marcello, easily keeping up with the injured man's pace. "What are you going to do now?"
"That's no concern of yours."
"Now that you aren't the one in charge, the Church isn't going to let you get away with murdering the Lord High Priest."
"I didn't murder him." Marcello turned to glare, as if he still had honor to defend. "He very conveniently died while I was getting Rhapthorne under control."
"That worked well for you."
"I was fine until you interfered."
Eight nodded slightly, then asked, "What if I offered to make it up to you?"
The suspicion in Marcello's narrowed eyes was close kin to the expression Angelo wore when someone took him by surprise. "How do you propose to do that?"
"We have a ship. We can get you away from here, leave you someplace where you won't be easily recognized. It will at least give you a chance to start over."
Marcello sneered. "And I suppose that in return I'll be expected to reconcile with my dear brother."
"No." Eight pulled Marcello close, kissed him hard enough to leave him gasping when they parted. "But I'm sure I can think of some way for you to repay me."
