Summary: Pre-game, post-Nibelheim; Aeris misses Zack.
He never did fix the roof - Zack, you jerk - but it let the sunlight in.
Aeris wasn't ready to face it, though, so she remained in the shadows in the corner of the church, trying and failing to sit comfortably on a hard wooden pew. She'd spent the coolest part of the morning crying, and she was still weak from it, raw-feeling and hiccupy. Now the sun was warming the church, but Aeris could only curl in on herself and rub the gooseflesh on her arms. Even a warm day could seem arctic compared to the warmth of Zack's arms around her...
...Don't start. Aeris pressed a hand to her face, clenching her jaw against another sob. She couldn't do anything about the tears spilling over her cheeks, though, so she let them fall where they would. Gods, Zack, I miss you.
There were times Aeris cursed the extra senses that were her birthright, but this wasn't one of them. Knowing Zack was dead hurt, but hope would have been worse. Hope didn't die as easily as boyfriends.
Scrubbing at her eyes impatiently, Aeris got up and paced down the center aisle. She had work to do, caring for her flowers and gathering them to sell. It wasn't much, the money she earned, but it eased the worry lines between her mother's eyes a little, and she would have paid a lot more than a few gil a day to see that. In any case, she spent her days in crowded areas, making friends a moment at a time while she sold her bits of bright color to stave off the dark. Paradoxically, it kept her safe.
Zack, she thought again, and though her eyes wavered with tears she smiled. You've given me so much.
She stepped into the sunlight, and looked up. Past the Plate, just at the edge of the broken roof, Aeris could see a bit of blue sky.
