I haven't read Sandman at all, so clearly I am missing things, but from what I do know you are doing Gaiman great justice. The language is wonderful, and makes it gorgeous despite the gore. I think my favorite was the paragraph that ended:
...monitors the rivulets of blood flowing down their cheeks but ignores the choked screams rising ragged from beneath him. They impede his focus. Vitreous humor coats his fingers and gathers under his nails when he pries their eyes free at last, and he watches them die with their own eyes.
...and, okay, my attempt at not quoting a huge chunk failed, but it was just. Really amazing description, imagery, feeling, though the whole thing.
