A/N: Any questions about timeline could perhaps be answered with this statement: I envisioned it right before the canon events that would give this snapshot the most cruel irony.
Prompt:Katekyo Hitman Reborn! - Tsuna/Kyoko - gentleness - depend on it
She was waiting for him in the rain, her hair slicked to her cheeks, a smile blooming brilliantly on her face as soon as she spotted him.
Her chest felt a little too full, heartbeat skipping into overdrive the way it always did, and she stretched to wave and catch the tentative, shy flicker of smile as he directed his steps toward her.
The cherry tree spread blossom-laden branches above her head and the wind plucked at her hair, slanting icy drops over them both. She ran the last few feet to meet him and crashed into him, an unceremonious greeting, as her feet skidded in the mud.
She found his mouth clumsily and his hands came up to cup her skull, fingers threading through her wet hair. They clung together for a long moment, sharing kisses with the heady warmth of two people who had just begun to learn each other’s bodies as well as their own.
After a moment they broke apart just enough to retreat under the branches of the tree for the minimal protection they offered. “You’re going soon?” She asked, cheeks flushed, caught within the careful cradle of his arms. His smile flashed, shy and bright and oddly calm, with unflinching determination.
"Yes." He said solemnly, and kissed her again. She wrapped her arms around him--skinny, shaking boy, only not so skinny because now she can feel the muscle of him, the ropy lean strength running the length of his back.
She remembered the way he had been and idly wished that she had hugged him before, held him like this when he was just a shy, gentle and harmless boy who blushed when she glanced at him and tripped over his words. Kyoko loved him with this bravery and she thinks she might have loved him before it, and she wished, sometimes, that she knew him even better.
Sometimes he'd come out with something that surprised her, some encyclopediac knowledge of what she liked, what she wanted, what she thought. He'd remind her of the cake she liked best when she tried it three months ago, or remember the place she thought looked prettiest when the whole group had been glancing through brochures.
But Kyoko knew certain things about herself and him at once, with a calm knowledge that pulsed in time with the beat of her heart. She knew that she loved Tsuna, and she knew that she would love him forever and ever, and she knew that right now that was enough. And she would have all the time in the world to learn.
She cupped his face in her hands and kissed him again, long hair trailing down her back and over his hands. "You'll be coming back soon, Tsu-kun?" She asked.
The smile returned, bright and brave, and she kissed him compulsively just to watch the last of the shadows evaporate behind his eyes. "Depend on it."
