I'm dimly aware of seeing books left alone on the shelves amid the carnage and looting of the castle, and maybe something in there has the answer. Even before my mother died, I always had the impression of my father being the one people looked to in the court. I can't tell if that's just memory playing tricks on me, or the way things were. Tokk might remember enough to know who the leading monarch before my mother died had been. My father was a.... he was a man who wanted results. I imagine that people retained his pleasure by producing those results, whether or not they should have retained their title."
She sighed, leaning against the counter. "But that's just conjencture. I don't know very much about how long the nobles of the time had been in power. I very quickly became preoccupied with two things: the ancient technology, and unsealing my power. If it didn't have to do with those things, well... when I wasn't studying them I was sleeping.
