Ivee was quiet a moment, thinking. Her first inclination was that Girl Talk would and should include being able to talk freely about sex and all such related things, but the queen had apparently been raised in a culture that had some concepts about sex and sexuality that made no sense to her, so she wasn't sure if the queen would find that sort of thing appropriate or not.
"That's possible," she said, scrubbing down the chopping board. "Unfortunately, there's not always an abundance of children up for adoption, not out here, at least not nowadays. The population of the kingdom's not as big as it used to be, 'extra' children are hard to come by. Most same-sex couples get a donor or a surrogate, depending on what genitalia have to be involved. Lesbian couples have it easier than gay men- all lesbians have to do is find a man they're comfortable with to donate his genetics, and once the partner that's going to carry is pregnant, he goes on his merry way, nice knowing you, good luck, that's the end of it."
She sighed. "Unfortunately, unless it's someone you know, you run the risk of getting a donor who doesn't understand that his involvement's done pretty much the minute he is. Sophie and I have mentioned kids waaaaaaaaaaay down the line, but nobody in town our age is someone we'd be comfortable with, and people coming in from the outside, you run the risk that whoever you pick might be carrying something he got from a previous partner, and that's not something anyone wants to deal with."
She squinted at the queen. "Maybe this is considered an inappropriate topic for a queen and her ladies-in-waiting, but were you given a lecture on safety and consent? I'd consider that part of the basics, but I'm getting the feeling there were a lot off areas you weren't given what you should've been."
