"Generally, yes, and sometimes earlier. Many marriages among the nobility were arranged, some as early on as infancy. It wasn't very common but I've heard that sometimes marriages were done when the betrothed were still children. They weren't expected to do anything about it, not that young, but the marriage would be officially on the books. It was rare for people to marry because they fell head over heels and wanted to have a life together. Generally, marriages were done to produce heirs, and seal treaties, create alliances, that sort of thing."
Zelda shrugged. "As far as not dallying about before one was wed, it was considered unseemly, and in some cases, lowered the dowry price for whoever it was that carried on. I'm sure there were plenty of instances where unmarried people didn't follow that standard, but they were expected to be even more discreet in their mischief than married people were. Appearances were everything."
She talked in between bites. "This is very good, by the way. Which is why it was a bit of surprise that your father and mother didn't, at least I'm assuming they didn't from the sounds and looks of things, have any backlash from an unmarried dalliance that produced a child. That wouldn't have been the case among the noble class."
