Final Fantasy VII (Reno, Rude->Tifa) [week 5 - prompt 2]
Title: Have a Shot
Author: Cadence
Rating: PG-13
Word Count: 600
Summary: Reno'd known Rude was sweet on that Tifa girl, of course.
Reno'd known Rude was sweet on that Tifa girl, of course. She did have a damn nice rack. Not to mention that he sort of secretly suspected that Rude got off on someone who could slam him into the ground, which made him a little bitter, because it wasn't exactly Reno's fault that Rude was built like a fucking rock.
But it was obvious that nothing was going to come of it other than said ground-slamming while they were Shinra and they were AVALANCHE, so Reno didn't think about it too hard.
Only after it all was over and they were being sort-of-not-completely-hostile to Cloud's collective – because, if Reno was completely honest, they had saved all their asses, and at this point there wasn't much of Shinra left that they couldn't destroy in a weekend of they felt like it – Reno caught Rude turned towards Tifa and looking – well, he couldn't exactly tell what Rude was looking like, of course, because of those damn glasses, but he could imagine. And it occurred to him that Rude might actually have a shot now if it weren't for the Strife kid.
And well, what was a partner if they didn't have your back?

He wasn't stupid enough to try anything directly, of course. His first attempt was a damn clever trick he'd been wanting to try out for years: a concealed poison materia, and a remote MP trigger for it. Stick the trigger in something innocuous, like a bone in a pie or something, and the target'd be hit with Bio, think it was just the food, and before they knew it they'd be dead.
It was a genius plan, no matter what anyone said, and it would have worked perfectly if he hadn't forgotten that Strife had that fucking ribbon.

For his second attempt he went back to basics. Set a charge up on a bridge. Watch for Strife to come by. Set it off. If the explosion didn't kill him, the fall should. Dead simple, and there was still enough old weaponry and junk around the old sectors an explosion wasn't too suspicious.
Only it turned out that when Strife came by he was doing cleanup, collecting the old weaponry and junk, and so he came up the underside of the bridge and defused the bomb before Reno stopped gaping long enough to get his fingers on the trigger.

On his third attempt Rude caught him as he was coming out of their artillery room. That by itself wasn't particularly out of the ordinary, but the rifle was an expensive and uncharacteristic enough piece of equipment that Rude raised an eyebrow.
"Don't worry. I'm doing it for you, man," Reno found himself saying, and that made Rude catch his arm before he could walk away.
"Reno." Rude said, in that tone that meant Reno wasn't going to get out of this one without some work.
"Look, I tried the more subtle methods already. I'll be so far away when I get him, no one will know it was me, I swear!"
"Reno." Rude said again, more slowly. "Who are you trying to kill?"
"Oh. Strife. 'Cause the Lockhart girl seems to be pretty attached to him, and you –"
"Right." Rude interrupted gruffly. "That's – sweet," he said, as if trying the word out.
"So can I –"
"No. Strife would kick your ass. If you managed to wound him, Tifa would kick your ass. Then probably kick my ass for good measure."
"Isn't that what you –"
"No, Reno," Rude said, but he was smiling a little.
