Merry Christmas
Who: Matt; OPEN
Where: Near the Barn site
When: Evening, December 25, 2009
Rating/Warning: tbd
Summary: Merry undead Christmas
Status: Open; Complete

It was relaxing to sit and watch the snow fall around him. Matt wore a jacket just to keep up with the appearance of being mortal, but it was still much too cold to be sitting out there smoking like he was.

He'd been a Christian in life, but after his death really didn't see the point in continuing his pursuit of religion. It just seemed pointless when in their eyes he was damned beyond saving. Undead, a walking corpse, a soulless monster in the eyes of the Church, he preferred to stay away from churches--especially around the holidays. Celebrating the birth of Christ just wasn't first on his list of things he wanted to do.

Matt had already left Alice's present at her doorstep before running off before either she or Jasper could acknowledge his presence. Now, he held one more gift in his hands and wondered if he should find Belle to give it to her. She was a demon, so he was almost sure she hated Christmas as much as he did, but it was the thought that counted, right?

He was sitting on what remained of a bench that had been in or around the barn before it had been destroyed, cigarette in one hand, Belle's gift in the other. It was silly how easily he had fallen back into smoking. He'd quit for Alice, but there really wasn't any need to avoid the habit now was there? The vampire pondered everything that had happened to him since he'd arrived in Ipswich as he watched the snow fall around him, gathering on his head and shoulders. He hardly noticed.

"I don't know the bloody county, but you're in Massachusetts," the vampire told her. He looked her over and briefly wondered what her blood tasted like, but unlike Bella the scent wasn't overwhelmingly strong. That stupid girl that ran with the Cullens had nearly gotten herself killed just by being around him. This one had a better chance of survival as lon as she didn't anger him.

"You're not the first person to be sent here, Lizzy," Matt told her. "Where are you originally from?"

"Massa-what?" she said, frowning. That didn't sound like any of the counties in the area. Perhaps something from overseas - she was less familiar with those, having run away before reaching that area of her studies. "I'm not... I don't..." she crossed her arms in front of her. "Look, this isn't funny anymore - not that it was funny to begin with - so if you could just drop the act..."

She didn't want to answer the question of where she was from. Arleton was a fairly significant neighbourhood, and the disappearance of the young princess was still a popular story - even 10 years later. You never knew who was going to connect enough puzzle pieces and try to bring her back there for the significant reward. And even if life on the streets was hell, it was still better than life in the palace.

"What, like this?" he asked sarcastically, letting his red eyes show as he flashed his fangs in a smirk. "It's not an act, I promise," the vampire told her. "You've really been sent here randomly, and you really can't go home. For now anyway."

She gasped sharply, stumbling backwards abruptly and losing her balance, toppling into the snow and crawling in a sort of half crawl. She looked up at him fearfully, having not expected that at all. He could change his appearance as well? That was not typical of the stories of vampires that she had heard. But his eyes had not been red a moment earlier, and she had thought his teeth seemed normal.

She squirmed a bit, trying to get eye contact back in case she would need it - but would her ability even work on a vampire? - and also trying to get back to her feet. He had an awful advantage right now, and she couldn't believe she had let him get it.

She didn't really hear the part about not being able to go home, but she wouldn't have cared even if she had. It wasn't like there was anything back home that she really wanted. Not anymore, at least. Saul had left her long ago.

He laughed, throwing the illusion back up. "Don't piss yourself," Matt told her, "I would have killed you already if I'd wanted to." Now he was just more curious about her than anything--mostly because this girl wouldn't tell him where she was from. While it was amusing to see her scurry away in fear, it wasn't getting him any answers.

"The town's not too far that way," Matt explained, pointing towards the road that led into town. "I'll give you a head-start before I chase after you," he added sarcastically. "That was a sodding joke, by the way."

She was disgusted, and furious, and curled her legs in on herself, sitting in a small protective ball in the snow. This was all a bit more overwhelming that usual. She hated people laughing at her, and she hated that there was absolutely nothing she could do about it because she was so out of her element.

It was cold. She was cold. Sitting in the snow wasn't helping and yet she didn't want to get up in case he scared her again. She didn't like it here, she wanted to go home, or for him to...

Maintaining direct eye contact, she decided to test the waters with her ability. Using a very minimal amount of power, she said, "Just leave me alone."

If her power worked on him, he'd follow the instruction if he'd been inclined to leave her alone anyway - and even then, he still could break it and turn back if he changed his mind. But she'd judge by his reaction how receptive he was to her power from it.

A very suddenly he felt a slight pull to walk away, almost a nervous feeling that said he needed to do what she said. It didn't affect him strong enough that the reaction was instant and physically obvious, but it made him nervous enough that the vampire decided to leave on his own.

"Someone here is going to try to kill you," Matt informed her as he started walking backwards towards town, "and then you'll miss cuddly people like me being around." That said, he turned around to start walking away, confused as to what had just happened.

It worked. It was slight, but it worked. She doubted he'd have listened to her if it hadn't, at least. But she didn't think it worked very well, which meant... what, she didn't know, but it comforted her slightly to have an out if she needed it.

She did listen to his warning, and shuddered slightly. The urge to shout at him that she could take care of herself was all but overpowering, but she didn't. She suspected if she said something obnoxious like that he'd just prove her wrong by doing something frightening again, and she didn't really want to have to deal with that right now. Not when she was still adjusting to the fact that she really did seem to be in another world.

When Matt started to walk away, she followed him. She'd told him to leave her alone, but she suspected her was going in the direction of wherever other people were, and she really did need to get to where reasonable buildings were so that she was out of the cold.

If he led her somewhere else, she'd... figure it out eventually and change her path, but for now that was her intention. She didn't care if he noticed or not.
