When: Late 1 January in Europe/ 2 January in Australia; right before Lilja gets her hacking job
Status/Warnings: Complete.
Being without a roommate was lonely and depressing, especially given the current circumstances. The school was already empty enough, with so few people around and the people that were left constantly worrying, being afraid, being sad. On top of that, Astrid just could not sleep. Every time she dozed off she heard that knock at her window again, or she felt the stranger's arms dragging her out of the car. She jumped at every little noise, kept the lights on in her room day and night.
But she had had enough of this misery. If she wasn't allowed to help at the safehouse, then at least she could talk to someone who was helping. Astrid took in a deep breath, looked across at her roommate's empty bed, and dialed Lilja's number.
Lilja heard her phone ring as she worked - she would have just left it to ring she thought she was getting somewhere but she recognized Astrid’s ring tone immediately. She missed her roommate and had been worried about her and she thought that Astrid might ahve a nervous breakdown if let the phone go to voicemail. “Hello Astrid,” Lilja said, trying to sound upbeat.
It took all of Astrid's strength not to immediately burst into tears when she heard Lilja's voice. "LILJA! I'm so lonely. Are you okay? How is it? Have you heard anything new? How is everyone else? We're going to be okay, right?!"
Lilja wiped away a tear but it was really good to hear Astrid’s voice. “Yeah - we’re going to be okay,” Lilja said, not really believing what she was saying. “I haven’t heard anything new but everyone is working really hard I promise.” That wasn’t a lie everyone was taking this really serious.
Astrid tried her best to mimic a sigh of relief over the phone. She caught a glance at herself in the mirror, and almost recoiled from the sight. "Oh my God I look awful right now! This kidnapping shit is so bad for my pores." She was trying to sound breezy, cheerful even, but it came out sounding dead and hollow, like the words were coming from someone else. "But you must be really tired."
“I’m tired but it’s okay,” Lilja said. “It’s just good to hear your voice.” That wasn’t a lie – as much as the two girls fought and didn’t get along, Lilja would have been devastated if her roommate hadn’t come back. “It’s just a lot of computer stuff.” She was trying to sound upbeat and positive but Astrid was right, she was tired. And she was frustrated with the lack of leads. “You can do my makeup or something when I get back.”
"IT'S SO GOOD TO HEAR YOUR VOICE TOO!" Astrid nearly yelled into the phone. She had been a little bit worried that maybe Lilja didn't miss her at all, or that she wasn't thinking about her. She was so genuinely amazed by Lilja's computer powers and even felt slightly jealous that she wasn't at some safehouse, working hard to help save everyone. "Can I, please?? That would be so much fun!! But who knows when that is going to be." She hadn't meant to say it, but it had come out anyway. What if no one else got rescued?
Lilja pulled the phone away from her ear a little when she heard Astrid yell. She was glad that Astrid was at least partly still herself and she smiled. “Yeah you can do whatever you won’t, I promise I won’t even complain that much.” She didn’t know why Astrid always insisted on putting so much stuff on her face or what it was for – Lilja usually just put on a little eyeliner and lip gloss and called it a day.
“I hope it’s soon.” But honestly Lilja wasn’t that hopeful anymore – they had found almost no leads and she had wanted to put her foot through a computer monitor at some point. “But at this rate I don’t know.”
Astrid sighed. No one knew anything. It was like no one was ever going to know anything. "You'll find them. You're the best! You can totally do anything!" I think...
“Thanks,” Lilja said, although she didn’t know if Astrid’s trust was warranted. “Everyone is working hard. “ They were but working hard didn’t seem to be good enough right now. “I –“ she turned around and saw someone getting her attention – it was one of the IVF people. “Astrid – they need me for something but we’ll talk again soon okay.”
Astrid's heart thudded in her chest as she thought of a whole bunch of things that could possibly have been happening. What if they had finally found everyone? Or maybe they were all dead! Or maybe alive! Or anything, really! "Oh my god ok go! I love you you're the BEST! Talk to you later! Hang up the phone!!"
“Okay I love you too,” Lilja said automatically, she was already getting off the phone when she heard Astrid’s last words. “BYE!” she said before she hung up and turned to go see what they wanted.
