Juli hadn’t really been able to sleep all night, since the news came out, really. She hadn’t known Erik very well, though. She only really knew that he thought she was annoying and too young, and that he didn’t like her comments about his tongue. Though really, she thought, what else does someone with a prehensile tongue expect, and then immediately chided herself for thinking ill of the dead. Alyosha, on the other hand, she knew better. He was one of her first friends at IVI, someone she’d laughed and had fun with, the only other boy aside from Brad that she’d kissed at IVI. First she was angry, wanted to punch things, throw things, and then she just dissolved into a heap at the foot of her bed. She didn’t cry - because she wasn’t a crier, really - but she was miserable, drifting in and out of sleep.
It was mid-morning when she’d woken up fully, wincing as she stretched. She didn’t want to go do... anything, really. So she reached over and grabbed her phone, not really caring what time it was in America. She clicked a number on her speed dial and anxiously waited as the phone on the other side rang.
Brad hadn’t slept that well the night before. He didn’t know Erik or Alyosha that well but it still kept him awake and he was still upset about Providence and Padraig and everyone else who hadn’t been found yet. Bleary eyed he touched his phone and then lifted it up to see who was calling. “Hey lady,” he said, his voice full of sleep. Anyone else, he wouldn’t have picked up, but there was probably a reason Juli was calling. He hoped no one else was dead.
“I miss you,” Juli said, foregoing hellos or apologies for calling in the middle of the night. She pulled her knees up to her chest and wrapped her free arm around them. Sighing unhappily into the phone, she frowned. “I wish you were here. You’re okay though, right? Like, you aren’t hurt or anything, right?”
Brad rubbed his eyes and forced himself to listen closely to what she was saying even though he was barely awake. “Yeah of course I’m okay - you okay?” Then it dawned on him that Juli might have called him because something else bad happened. “You’re not hurt are you? Something else didn’t happen did it?”
“No, I’m fine,” Juli reassured him, finally feeling a little bit bad about waking him up just because she needed someone to talk to. “Sorry, do you want to go back to sleep? I’m just... I don’t know. I just wanted to hear your voice and make sure you were okay.”
“No - I don’t want to sleep,” Brad said. “I’m glad to hear your voice too, I miss you.” He sat up and pulled a shirt over his head one handed - careful not to wake up Hugo. He’d get some coffee and then he’d be set. “What are you doing right now?”
“Sitting in my room, skipping training,” she admitted with a shrug. She’d go later, and they were going easier on people today than they had on past days, but right now she just couldn’t deal with it. And besides, it’s not like they were going to find anything today that she’d need to use the training for, anyways. “How are things there?”
“Tsk tsk,” Brad teased her. Of course, all Juli had to do was watch someone do something and she could do it. She probably needed it less than anyone else. “They’re - quiet. It’s the same thing as yesterday.”
“Yeah. Every day’s the same. I guess I thought it would be more exciting,” she admitted. She was silent for a moment, fidgeting with the edge of the sheets with her free hand and wanting to bring up Providence, but then not sure if she should. Miyu was a safer topic, though even so she didn’t know if it was actually safe. “We’ll figure it out and be home soon, though. Well, IVI-home. And we’ll kick Jonas out again, and he can’t complain this time because he’s been there the whole time.”
“Yeah I hope he didn’t get an STD over break half the people left there are likely to get it,” Brad told her, trying to keep the conversation light. He just wanted to see Juli again - that’s all he really wanted right now. “We could kick him out for a week and I wouldn’t feel bad.”
“Ugh, do you think they’re going to make us do all those medical exams and stuff again,” she said, making a face as she remembered them. “But you should definitely kick him out for a week,” she agreed. “I’ve been thi-” she started, and then shook her head, feeling her face go a little warm and glad no one could see it. “He’d just go stay with Jesse anyway, and they’d both be happier that way.”
“I hope not, we just got tested anyway,” Brad said remembering Juli’s freak out a few weeks ago. “He, Jesse, and Kody can all cuddle anyway.” He rolled his eyes, he wasn’t sure that he would be in the mood to deal with Jonas when he got back anyway. “I’ll do my best to get rid of him for a while.”
“Yeah,” she agreed. “And, I mean, we were both fine. And it’s not like either of us caught anything over break,” she added, not because she had any concern at all that he had - because she didn’t. It was more of a reminder to herself. “Anyways, we’ll be back and kicking out Jonas soon. Really soon.”
Brad had to smile. “It’ll be good for him to kick him out. I would say that it would keep him humble but he is pretty much the opposite of humble.” Brad just hoped that Jonas hadn’t done anything gross on his bed. “Just be sure that you make it back just like I left you okay?”
"I will,"Juli said confidently, and then went silent. After a moment, she sighed. "I'll let you get back to sleep. I just wanted to make sure you were okay."
“Thanks for calling me,” Brad told her smiling a little. “I’ll text you later.”
