“You know, I miss Prague,” Tanja told the small philodendron as she sat down on the tiny bed that had been hers for a little over a week. She had placed him on the small table inside the room, after covering him with her knitted woolen hat so that she could get changed into her pyjamas. She shrugged her shoulders and started to braid her hair roughly, a routine that she performed every night to keep it neat while she slept. “It was so beautiful, I’m glad you told us to go. All of the snow, and the lights.” Tanja let out a little sigh of contentment, the memories of her fun with Enely and Petr seeming so far away already. “I’m awfully sorry about the bone chapel, though,” she apologised, still a little shamefaced after that incident. “I thought that people had drugs to make them happy, but it just made me pretty scared. I thought that they were watching me!” she shook her head a little, fingers still working away at that long braid. “But usually in movies, people just see funny colours and are happy and giggly. I thought it’d be like that.” She pulled a hairband over the end of the braid, and smiled down at the potted plant. She stood, reaching out to turn out the fluorescent strip-lighting in the tiny room, and then sat back onto the bed. It was dark now, and the only sound was soft rustling as Tanja arranged herself so that she was snuggled down inside the bedclothes. “I hope they find them,” she finally spoke again, quieter and wistful at the thought. “Marine, the others. They found Miyu, I know they can find all of the others.” Tanja had tried desperately to keep herself busy over the days, but her resolve had wavered ever since she’d heard what had happened to Alyosha. “He was in my classes and I don’t know what to say to Valya,” she admitted, “I never knew anyone die before. And now Providence-” Tanja hesitated for a moment, a lone sob caught in her throat. She coughed, clearing her throat, before continuing in barely more than a whisper. “I don’t want Marine to die.” “You know what she did for me? Before IVI? I never told anyone, not even Meena.” Tanja’s smile in the dark at the memory couldn’t have been seen or heard, but it was there. “I wrote to this YouTube show. It was stupid, but I wanted to tell people that I was a Vol and my parents kept making me hide it. And she told me not to be afraid, that I wasn’t alone. That I was brave. So I told them,” Tanja paused once more. “I told them and it was awful, but someone else thinking that I was brave helped. I didn’t even know it was Marine. It was just a person, but they helped.” More shuffling, as Tanja moved a little to properly envelope herself in the covers. “I’m only telling you because you’re a plant, and you might even be asleep right now,” she told him. “And because I reckon you can keep a secret, even if you do hear.” A longer pause, and Tanja pushed her hands to rest under the pillow beneath her head. “Goodnight Petr,” she spoke a little louder to the darkened room. “I hope you’re okay.” |
