WHO: Jenni Lynn Cooper AKA Davi's Mom [Texas] and Leona Turner [New Zealand]
WHAT: True to her word, Leona takes a little time to call Davi's Mom with an update. PS -- She totally emailed Jack's Mom with this new information.
WHEN: Sometime on Wednesday.
WHERE: Austin, Texas and Tokyo, Japan.
WARNINGS: N/A
STATUS: Complete.
Leona: Hello? [...] Ma’am? Thank you for accepting my collect call. This is Leona Turner, one of Davi’s friends from school. Mrs. Davi’s Mom: Oh! Hello! Oh, sweet Jesus in Heaven and all the Apostles! You have no idea how happy this makes me! [She pauses a moment to catch her breath.] Leona. Oh! You are the pretty girl with the pretty red hair. Leona: Oh, well. Thank you! [She smiles a little in spite of herself] I’m part of the Vol Squad, Ma’am, we’ve been given this evening off. Davi wanted me to call you. He said to let you know that he’s doing okay considering, but well, we don’t know when we’ll be able to make outside calls from IVF ourselves. Mrs. Davi’s Mom: [There is a few second pause.] You can make outside calls if you are on Vol Squad? Leona: [Softly] No. Not really. Only if we’re out for a mission and we get some free time, it looks like. And not from our own phones, we have to use payphones or the hotel phones. [A pause] It’s not against the rules exactly, but... Mrs. Davi’s Mom: Oh. I see. [She sounds a bit defeated and sniffs.] I hope you don’t get in too much trouble for this. But is he really okay? Or did he just tell you to say that? Leona: Oh no! He’s physically fine. He’s just frustrated. Most people are. And he misses being able to contact home. They’ve taken us completely out of our classes; we’re in all day training. They said we should have achieved all the education we needed to by now. He’s still with his boyfriend though! Enver. Enver’s really nice, Ma’am. Mrs. Davi’s Mom: I Skyped with Enver. He seemed very nice and polite. But wait. What is this about not having classes? What are they training you for? Why does everyone need all this training? Leona: We haven’t been told yet, Ma’am. They said it’s important for us to gain control of our powers or something. And we don’t know when classes as such will resume. In theory we should be able to work on our independent studies in the evenings, but without internet or email access, I’m not sure how it’s possible? Mrs. Davi’s Mom: You can’t do college independent study if there is no way to contact the college. I don’t even know if Davi has actually graduated high school or not. [She hoped she didn’t sound too bitter.] Are you guys really okay? Are you just saying that because they might be listening? You can tell me, honey. I have others I can tell if they’re not. Leona: Everyone’s... everyone’s safe. We just want to be in control of our own lives, I guess. Mrs. Davi’s Mom: I just can’t help but think how long being safe will last. Especially now since we can’t call and you have been shut out from the world. [She sniffs a few more times.] Leona: Oh, please don’t cry. I can turn into a polar bear! I’ll look after him. He’s fine. Really fine. But if you’ve been trying to do things from your end, I’m sure it will make him feel better to hear it. Mrs. Davi’s Mom: [She laughs, though he voice becomes more shaky as she talks.] Oh, honey. You let everyone one there know we are trying. We aren’t going to let this all go unnoticed. We aren’t going to let people think it is okay to do this to you all. You are humans and you have basic rights. Leona: [A little choked up herself] I will. Thank you. Thank you for everything that you’re doing for us. Mrs. Davi’s Mom: You make sure you tell him that. [It has become obvious she is crying.] And tell me him me and Matthew and his father and all his siblings love him. We’re praying for him and praying that the IVF with will gain some fucking common sense. Leona: I’ll tell him. I’ll tell him all of that. And I’ll call you again the next time I’m out. Thank you. Mrs. Davi’s Mom: Thank you for calling, Leona. You be careful and stay safe. [There is a sob before she hangs up the phone.] |
