Background:
Jack Shephard followed in the footsteps of his father and showed a natural aptitude for surgery. Whether this was due to the egregious amount of pressure applied from his father or not is unknown. So gifted, Jack graduated a year earlier from medical school than his classmates.
It should be noted that Jack has always had a rather tumultuous relationship with his father, up to and occasionally proceeding Christan's death. During a surgery in early 2004 Christian Shephard became intoxicated before surgery and mistakenly cut the hepatic artery of a patient. Jack attempted to rectify the error however, despite resealing the woman's artery, her rapid blood loss and resulting cardiac arrest caused her death. Once it was discovered that the patient was pregnant, Jack rescinded a falsified document claiming the death could not be prevented and implicated his father, resulting in a loss of Dr. Christian Shephard's medical license.
Jack met Sarah when she was involved in a near-fatal car accident 2001. The initial dire prognosis was that Sarah would never walk again. Despite all of the odds being stacked against it, Sarah eventually made a full recovery after Jack performed surgery on her spine. In 2003, Jack married Sarah. The marriage did not last more than a year before Sarah left Jack for another man.
After a brief visit to Thailand, but left the country shortly after arriving for reasons unknown.
In February 2004 Jack began stalking his estranged wife, refusing to sign the divorce papers that had been served. Unable to locate the true identity of the man Sarah was leaving him for, he assumed Christian had stolen his wife. This resulted later in a physical altercation and subsequent arrest of Jack Shephard. Jack was later bailed out of jail by Sarah.

During his time on the island Jack has saved many lives, including that of Charlie Pace, nearly slain by one of our own. He has taken on the role of leader for the survivors of Oceanic Flight 815 and should be approached with extreme caution. Known allies are Katherine Austen, James Ford and Sayid Jarrah.
