Hangover Blues
Who: Colin and open
Where: Alfa -2 and then out around town
When: After 2pm

Colin groaned and rolled over on his bed, wincing at the headache and nasty ass taste in his mouth. He didn't think he'd had that much to drink. The sun was shining way too brightly and as high in the sky as it was, it was probably way past noon. Okay, why hadn't Robbie called to wake his ass up? Unless he had had that much to drink and it was a slow day at the shop. That was the nice thing about owning a shop with your best friend. You could take hangover days.

He groped the bedside table blindly for his cellphone to check the time and couldn't find it. Just the picture of his whole family taken at Robbie and Becky's wedding he kept there. Stupid thing must have fallen off the nightstand. Rolling out of bed, he landed rather ungracefully on his ass. Pushing his bangs out of his eyes, he started searching around on the floor and hey, when did he get carpeting?

Something wasn't right here. Leaning back against the bed he realized wasn't his, he scrubbed his hands down his face and tried to remember what happened last night. He'd gotten jumped when he came out of the can and then he got shot with a dart. No, that couldn't be right.

Stumbling to his feet, Colin wavered as he looked around the room that wasn't his. What the hell? And he needed to piss again, but he wasn't certain he could ever go to the bathroom again without wanting to check all the closets and shit first. Which was crazy and only happened in horror movies. Except it had apparently happened to him.

Okay, regardless if somebody jumped out at him, he had to piss. So to the bathroom it was, where hopefully there wasn't so much sunlight to make his hangover worse. The way his head felt and his mouth tasted, he was almost hoping somebody would jump him and knock him out again. That way he could finish sleeping off the hangover and stuff would make sense again.

Yeah, he was really hung over, because that didn't make sense at all.

After he did his business, no one attacked him; so he went back to looking for stuff. There was a little computer thingy on his bed. It looked expensive and was definitely not his. There was a note on it from some Commissioner guy. He read it, then read it again, then read it one more time to make sure he wasn't hallucinating.

Okay, this could not be real. It was a prank. The guys had entered him into one of those prank shows and any minute now, they were going burst out of the closets and he'd threaten them with death and they'd all laugh.

After two minutes of waiting for this to happen, Colin was starting to doubt. So he went and looked in the closet and found...some of his clothes. Okay, this was still not making sense. He went back and read the note again. Yeah, still fucked up.

Okay, he was going outside then. Maybe that was the punchline of the prank, they were all waiting outside to jump out at him and laugh and get thumped because this was so not fucking funny.

Rolling his shoulders like a prize fighter about to go a few rounds, he opened up the front door and saw...

A row of cottages just like the one he was in and nobody around. Fuck. "Okay, guys," he called out as he stepped into the sun, shielding his eyes and wincing as his headache got worse. "This isn't fucking funny anymore. Come out here so I can kick your asses for this. What the hell did you guys put in my drink anyway?"

Yeah, nobody was coming out. Oh this wasn't fucking happening. Reality was slowly setting in and he was beginning to get very worried. "Hello?" he called out. "Is anybody there?"

Fuck

"You were walking out in the woods after dark?" he asked. "Alone?" Okay, if she knew them. But still. Yeah, he had nothing.

"Oh good," he said as he shook her hand gingerly. Her fingers already looked beaten up enough without having him squeeze them too hard. "Because really, I have no idea what to say in this situation. Sorry."

And there went words that were probably supposed to be English, but not any English he knew. "Bothies?" he hazarded. "Um, I think it's an island. That's what the note said."

She usually didn't think twice about it, but every once in awhile she met someone who didn't know her and remembered that she was a little bit of an oddity. "Guess I'm what you can call a bit of a 'nature freak'. I cannae help myself most days." She shrugged a little, and then chuckled. "Most people think I'm barmy, but I'm just more at outside, in the trees and out of the city and such. Just me, really."

A frown pulled at her lips. "You dinnae haveta worry, really. I'm nattering on enough f'r the both of us, it seems. I'm sorry too."

Another flush suffused Gwyn's cheeks, and she apologised again. "Sorry. I meant cottages. Reminds me a bit of town- Fort William. Everything a touch military, the same. Or somethin'." She rubbed the back of her neck in an almost nervous gesture and chuckled. "Did it? I know I read it- like, three times- guess it just didn't stick. Sorry about that."

Colin just kind of nodded. She kept using words he didn't know and while their was a lot to be said for context, he wasn't going to assume anything. "Yeah, not a big city person either," he agreed, hoping that was close to what she was saying.

And it was getting worse. Nattering on?

Finally, something he understood. "Yeah, it is like that," he admitted. Colin nodded. "I think it did? I read it three times too. And it still doesn't make any sense. What could they want from us?"

He didn't have any money, any real connections outside his family. He didn't even have a steady girlfriend at the moment.

His family. "Oh God," he said as his eyes went wide. "My family is gonna freak out when I don't come to dinner tomorrow. My mom-" He raked his hands through his hair. "My sister's pregnant. Her first kid. She'll make herself sick worrying."

Colin started pacing back and forth, now worrying about his family as well as what the hell he was doing here in the first place.

Some of the anxiety that had been simmering just below the surface of her thoughts began to manifest itself in the movement of her hands. She tugged at her bandages, suddenly eager to feel the open air on her healing skin. They didn't come away very easily, however. Gwyn frowned and then seemed to realise she was not alone, even though he'd been talking to her all the while. "Haven't the foggiest," she said. "I mean, unless it's somethin' t'do with the bit of- eh, no. No, yer right. Haven't done a thing t'deserve this."

She was distracted from the rising panic that tightened in her chest as Colin began to freak about his family. Gwyn's lips pressed together as she thought of her own family. It had never occurred to her before now. As close as she was to her mam, da and siblings, somehow she just took it for granted that she would see them again. She watched him pace for a moment, before putting a hand out and putting it on his arm.

"Colin," she said, her voice kept carefully steady, "we'll figure out a way to get back to them, yeah? We aren't completely as hopeless as all that." She paused a little and then offered him a smile. Maybe she could distract him a little. "Congratulations on nearly bein' a new uncle. D'yeh know yet if the bairn'll be a lad or a lass?"

Now he was curious what she might have done. Okay, it was none of his business and he sure as hell wasn't going to ask. That would just be rude.

Colin stopped as Gwyn laid a hand on his arm. He looked in her face, almost needing her to say what she did. He was feeling pretty hopeless, but she was right. He laughed a small bitter laugh when she asked about Emilly's baby.

"She's having a girl," he managed. "Thanks." And thinking too hard about his family was going to set him off again. So new topic. "Have you looked around at all?" Hopefully she knew more than he did.

"A wee girl? That's fantastic," Gwyn said with a grin. "Don' really know ya, but I feel like you'll be a great uncle."

Ah, the abrupt subject change. Some things were universal.

"Me? No, haven' had the chance. I was just about to when I heard you shout. Care to take a turn? Get the lay of the place?"

Her stomach chose that moment to rumble noisily, and she pressed a hand to it even as she gave an embarrassed laugh. "Lord, but I must be half-starved. Haven't a clue how long I was unconscious. You?"

It really was. Colin smiled a little bit at that. "Yeah, we're all pretty excited," he admitted. "And thanks. I want to be. Robbie's my best friend and Em's my little sister. It just comes with the territory, right?"

He wasn't sure if it was safe, but if she was going, he should too. That way she wouldn't be alone. Besides - "Sure, it isn't like there's anything better to do," he admitted.

His stomach was still upset, but he figured some coffee and toast couldn't hurt anything. "I think the gal making dinner put up all the premade food. We could check my fridge, I guess. Since we're right here." He pointed back to the cabin he was standing in front of. "I could use some coffee. It was about midnight when I got home, but I don't know how long I was out. Sorry."

Gwyn's eyes went wide; she couldn't imagine her brother or sister with any of her friends from uni. Just thinking about it gave her stomach an uncomfortable twist. Marcas was a bit of a womanizer and Isobel was just plain a diva. There was no way she would inflict anyone she knew on either of them. "Works out well, then. Does she have a name yet? Candidates for names?"

She was all set to go exploring when her stomach gave over to an entirely different plan. Ingrate. She flashed a smile at Colin. "Sure, but you dinnae mind? I'd hate to raid yer cupboards. Though, if yer havin' me in, I 'spose I can throw somethin' t'gether. Used t'have a flat mate at school would go on benders. Gave me a great hangover 'potion'. Might set that headache to rights, if we've the ingredients."

Yeah, he hadn't been too keen on the idea either. Not that Robbie wasn't a great guy, but he'd been out drinking with the guy and seen him pick up girls and Emily was his little sister. It hadn't been pretty when he found out, but in the end, it worked out well. "Amy," he told her. "Her name's gonna be Amy. They decided that like the day they found out they were having a girl."

Colin shrugged. "Since they're suppling the food, might as well," he pointed out. Her offer to make him a hangover potion was a godsend. "Thank you. That'll help a lot."
