"I don't think anyone understands the why part," Lily admitted as she regarded the refrigerator door for a long moment before taking a couple of steps back away from it. She was aware of her heart thumping a little faster, and she licked her lips. It was on the tip of her tongue to tell Lizzy to close the damn door, but that ... was impolite and completely unnecessary.
"Maybe there isn't a why, anymore," she murmured, crossing her arms over her chest, shoulders hunching slightly as she drew slow, steadying breaths. She thought to elaborate on her newfound theories of their captors going rogue and this simply being an exercise in their sadistic pleasures, but that was hardly something to mention to a child.
So instead, she stood where she was, waiting for the door to close and wondering if that would even help at this point.
