What he suggested made perfect sense from a criminal point of view; it was not as though he had not witnessed such things before. Ichabod was not entirely naive, nor was he a true optimist, but there was a part of him that had hoped that he and Katrina had experienced their fill of nightmares in Sleepy Hollow. It was never his intention to put her in a position where she could be harmed by his actions, but it certainly explained why she was here now, with him.
"Yet you are still here," Ichabod noted when Chase made his last statement. "Try as you might you remain alive. If they had intended to kill us all, why do you think that you live?"
Ichabod took a step back and motioned to Chase, "You seem whole and healed, Mr. Collins. I would think that if they desired your death, one of your exploits would have succeeded in it and you too would have been sharing that small graveyard. I doubt it is coincidence, sir; have you given thought to that?"
