RP: Me Tarzan ...
Characters: Chase, Ichabod
Time/Date: Late night, October 25
Location: huts in the village area
Warnings/Rating: Chase being Chase
Summary: Chase explores at night
Status: Complete

Chase hadn't been doing well in the making-friends department. His closest ally was (or had been) an eight year old girl. Now that everyone was back though, he wasn't sure her vengeance was carrying through.

There were times when he almost wanted to try to make friends with people, but ... four months in, it was probably too late. People had their opinions and it wasn't like he was exactly inclined to work to change those impressions. That was work, after all. If people weren't inclined to just like him, then what did he care?

Still, here, it would be easy enough to just ... get lost and avoid people for a little while. He was sure a lot of them still wanted him dead for his commentary on the video.

People though seemed to be handling things just fine, given by the decorating and the announcement of the costume party. Maybe he'd get a white sheet, cut some eye-holes and go as a ghost. The idea amused him as he strolled through the drizzling rain toward one of the tree-houses. He wondered if there were cameras in those, and then he wondered if he cared. What was to keep him from using one now and again? Maybe sleeping there if the damn rain ever stopped falling.

Climbing up one of the trees, Chase ducked into the treehouse and looked around in the darkness. It was hard to see, but the moon cast decent light when it came out from behind the clouds. Plunking himself down near one of the tree-house windows, Chase listened tot he night sounds and wondered if he'd manage to spy anything of interest tonight.

The thought of celebrations made Ichabod just a tad uncomfortable- not that he would say a word to the others; they had good reason to celebrate after all. So many believed dead, so much unnecessary pain and terror, and for what? There was no reason that he could see- yet.

To that end he had been thinking on the numbers that Kyle had mentioned, and examining what he had shared. Odd that he had not paid much attention to them before, and perhaps they were relatively harmless as others had said, but it gave him a reason to take the night air to think- even if it was raining. He wanted to see them, and while doing so might be better during the day, he found that the quiet that night offered appealed.

Determined to find these numbers and see them for himself (for he was still a man who desired visual and tangible proof after all), he walked the paths as he searched for these signs, paying attention to the sounds in his surroundings, just in case. After all, horrible things had been known to come from the woods- and the way things were going in this place it seemed a possibility that was more likely than not.

Chase grinned a little as he heard footsteps over the pattering whisper of the light rain that was on its way out and fading fast.

His eyes had adjusted to the darkness, and he watched in the direction of the sounds until he saw a figure breaking through the foliage.

Chase squinted a little, studying the person until he'd figured out why he seemed familiar. "Hey, Icky," he called from his perch in the house. Shifting up a little, Chase rested his crossed arms on the cut out boards that formed the window. They were uneven, were probably going to give him splinters, but he didn't care just then.

"Nice night for a walk," he taunted, wondering if the other man was going to be able to locate him right off.

Ichabod froze when he heard that name; only one person had called him by it in this place so it took little guessing as to the identity of the one calling him.

"Rain does not bother me," he replied as he squinted a little bit and searched for the source of the voice. It was hard enough to see through the wet foliage, though the rain was letting up- finally.

"What are you hiding from?" he continued. "Why are you not inside with the others, decorating and preparing to celebrate?" It wasn't a question he suspected he needed an answer to, but it made him no less curious.

"I wasn't invited," Chase replied, holding very still in the window of the treehouse. "Why aren't you inside, decorating with the masses? All the rats trying to make their cage prettier when we all know the truth.

"No matter how pretty they make it, it's still a fucking cage."

He grinned as he watched the other male, wondering if he'd been spotted yet and figuring it wouldn't take too long for Icky to pinpoint the general area his voice was coming from. The rain and plants probably weren't distorting it too much.

Chase did briefly think about throwing his voice to throw him off, but ... well, that'd only be fun for a little while. He glanced up toward the sky, watching the clouds. He could see the moon faint but growing brighter as a cloud started to pull away from where it was covering the moon.

Well, that would probably help with things, right? Chase half-closed his eyes to minimize the reflection of moonlight off his eyes when it did come out.

"How's your girlfriend?" he added with a leering taunt to his voice.

"I see," he answered as he thought on it. The net had made it plain in his interpretation that everyone was invited, but such things were never his interest or talent. He could imagine Katrina enjoying it if she was so inclined, but she had always been one of those people that others enjoyed,so he would leave such things to her unless she asked.

The comment Chase made about the island being a cage struck a chord with Ichabod. It was unfortunate that they agreed , even as crudely as he put it; surely they would not find more common ground than that.

"They are doing quite well without me," he replied as he spotted the tree house- how odd a thing to find, yet nothing in these places should surprise him anymore. Should not, but probably would. "I would have thought you to be the sort of man who does not wait for an invitation, who does as he pleases because he pleases." Not always a positive trait.

"As for my fiancé, she is quite well despite this place. I expect her to remain that way." The sound of his question did not give him the impression that the man asked simply from the goodness of his heart, but he could not see his face so he could not be sure.

"Yeah, but I'm also not smart enough to go sauntering around where armed men who are inclined to kill me might be present." Oh, he harbored no illusions about that, and he was doing his level best to avoid any of the known gunmen. Jake, Spike, and Mal were all at the top of that list, though he considered Spike the bigger threat. Mostly because Spike had already shot someone and because Spike had threatened him outright.

"You've got some pretty high expectations then. Haven't you noticed the pattern? They like fucking with couples. How many more times do you think they're going to pretend to take her away or kill her before they actually follow through on it to leave you waiting for a return that'll never happen?"

Chase grinned. He really probably shouldn't be so antagonistic, but some people made it so easy.

"But our kidnappers aside, there're a few people on this island who don't have the best intentions when it comes to the fairer sex. Some of them aren't obvious about it, either," Chase added as he withdrew slightly from the window before he found his way down from the treet.

Stepping out of the shadows, he stepped closer to where Ichabod was, though by no means anywhere near his personal space. Just within a more conversational range.

Armed men. So there were others with guns; good to know, and it made him wonder what reason these men would have to shoot him- besides his mouth... and perhaps that little message he had sent when they had shown the destruction of the island.

"I have not been here long enough to see a pattern," Ichabod countered as he watched the man come toward him, and his back straightened just a bit. "I have been here long enough to realize that our captors are not entirely truthful, and take great pleasure in what they do. To this day I have seen them inflict misery evenly, and in truth I do not know who is considered a couple and who is not."

"Of course if you know of someone here who is a potential danger to any of the ladies I would ask that you tell me," he continued, the tone he used for investigations creeping into his voice whether he realized it or not. "Or are you one of those men you speak of?"

Chase shrugged. Sometimes he forgot he'd been here so much longer than so many of the others. He'd seen patterns, watched people couple up, and any number of things.

"Well, you'll learn," he offered Ichabod before he crossed his arms over his chest.

If Chase had been the giggling sort, that comment would have set him off. Warn Icky, really? "Sure," he said, an amused smile breaking across his lips. "I'll warn you. Or tell you about it afterward," he added in a lower voice after a slight pause.

He rolled his shoulders. "We're all a danger to each other," he pointed out. "If they pitted us against each other to survive, you think we wouldn't all be ready and willing to kill each other?

"Think about it. It'll happen some day at the rate they're going."

His comment gave Ichabod all the notice he needed, and he would certainly do his best to make sure that Katrina knew what sort of man this one seemed to be. There was a difference between sarcastic and unfriendly, and outright mean and evil. Time would tell the truth, but so far this man was not doing a great deal to remove the thought that he was of the latter.

Not that Ichabod had ever been wrong before.

Still, Chase did make a point, and it raised a question that he had dealt with and considered on a daily basis. What would it take to cause any man or woman to murder? All were capable of it, but some gave in more easily it seemed. Far too easily.

"I have seen the darker side of humanity, sir," Ichabod started. "I have seen witnessed good men and women fall victim to wicked people acting out of spite, greed, and desire. I have no illusions that all men and women are goodness and light, but that does not mean it must be accepted. I do not believe that all here would be prepared to kill- although I would go to great lengths to protect my fiancé."

He clasped his hands behind his back and wondered just what sort of man Chase had been before being brought here- curious enough to ask, even though he expected no honest answer.

"It occurs to me that I have never asked your name," he said after a moment's delay, remembering that he did not like the name this man had chosen for him and probably the reason he had not asked sooner. "If you have been here long enough to learn things, why are you so here, alone?" So disliked would be the next question, but it seemed redundant and foolish to ask- the man was abrasive, yet he was still talking.

"Great lengths," Chase repeated. "But not to murder? Not even for her?" He smiled. "I'll keep that in mind." Not that he really had any intentions of doing anything to incite murderous urges in Ichabod (sure, he wasn't the same level of threat as Spike, but he wasn't ready to add another guy to his 'to avoid' list), but he did like to know his options.

Chase cupped his chin as he thought. "No, I think if it comes right down to it, under the right set of circumstances, everyone here would kill. Even the dog." Granted, the 'right set' would be different for everyone, and Chase doubted most of them would ever be faced with it, but it was interesting to think about, all the same.

"Chase Collins," he replied to the inquiry about his name. "I'm sure you've heard of me," he added with a grin. In a negative connotation, no doubt, but Chase had screwed with enough people that word had probably wandered.

"Alone by choice," he lied. Just like he'd lied to Caleb not so long ago. He didn't want to be alone, and deep down in the place he denied he had, he didn't want to be an asshole, either. But he'd grown up this way, and the armor was firmly in place. He'd been excluded -- the fact that it was by accident and not design didn't matter to him -- and he'd grown up alone. He'd live alone, and someday -- sooner than most -- he'd die alone.

He had not put too much thought to it, but as a constable he certainly had a right to kill in self defense, or the defense of others. He much preferred to find another way though, any other way that could resolve it in such a way that justice was done without the need for death. Still, if it was Katrina's life in the balance...

"But a dog is an animal, and they act upon instinct. Killing is part of their nature, so that should surprise no one." They were carnivores after all, and the way a carnivore gained meat was to kill, so it gave him no pause or discomfort to think on that.

A nod of his head when Chase offered his name, but his comment was met with a small shake. "No, Mr. Collins, I'm afraid I have not heard of you, save for meeting you in the lottery room and the comment you saw fit to make," he answered. He chose to ignore it for obvious reasons (or they seemed so to him). "I believe you know my name, even if you do not choose to use it properly." The last was an admonishment; he preferred the young man to use his name rather than that twisted version of it, though he doubted it would do any good. He did not offer Katrina's name either.

"Alone by choice... despite the note from those who brought us here? The note which said we must work together to find a way out?" Perhaps this young man had an entirely different perspective, which made it worth hearing. "Do you think it wise?"

"I don't think Dug has much of a killer instinct," Chase said, his lips twisting into a slightly derisive sneer. Chase had killed, and he found he liked it. Sure, they were justified killings, and he supposed he'd even do it with no provocation and just for the fun of it.

Which said what about him, exactly?

"Ichabod," he said, drawing the name out. "It's a little long for my tastes. Icky works just fine," Chase said, a grin replacing the sneer.

He shrugged to the question. "Well, I don't exactly see any of you working together to try to escape, whereas I jump at it every chance I get. So you tell me which of us has the better idea." Granted, if he'd had a group with him to distract the sharks, he probably could have escaped. Fuck them. He didn't need anyone. He'd been alone all his life. Why start making relationships now?

Hardening his resolve, Chase nodded slightly to his thoughts before he set his cool blue gaze back on Ichabod.

The fact that he said any of you was telling, and Ichabod noted it, even as he fairly bristled at the nickname the young man chose to keep for him. He could tell the young man to use his job title, but his jurisdiction was not likely to extend to this place, so there was little point. Besides, if Chase was as he seemed to lead on there would be no purpose in revealing it too quickly.

"An examination, a process of experimentation and a process of elimination. Scientific techniques, Mr. Collins; knowledge of the wrong sort comes through rash actions, though it is no less valid. The risk is far too great. From what I understand some of the attempts have lead to injury and death. I cannot imagine you would desire the latter- at least not for yourself."

"How much time do you think you have?" Chase challenged him quietly. "How long do you think they'll let you examine and eliminate and use your techniques?"

He took a couple of steps closer to Ichabod. "What makes you think they'll give you time, or let you find anything out? They're watching your every move," he continued. "You think you can plan anything, investigate anything, that they won't know about and put a stop to?"

Shaking his head, Chase crossed his arms over his chest again. "No. The only way anyone's getting out of here is just a straight charge down the middle. Something they won't expect. Not something that they can watch you plot out."

Ichabod was effectively silenced, and yet another several questions formed- questions he could not help but ask. For all of his gruff manner and unfriendliness, Chase was actually offering good information.

"I cannot know what time I have, but I cannot sit idly by and let it pass as they inflict further horrors upon us. How can they know everything, see everywhere?" There had to be places on this island- and the last- that they did not go or could not see; was it possible that their most intimate or private moments were available for them to see? Were these "cameras" omniscient?

"What if those who have left discovered something. How are we to know their fates? How are we to know if they were returned home or not? It makes little sense to me that those who died would be buried in a graveyard on the other island, their bodies left here, and those who have vanished left no bodies!" He was not upset- not truly upset, although he was getting more frustrated. There had to be a way, but it was certainly looking more difficult as they spoke.

Chase grinned slightly. "When you set up rats in a cage, you make sure there's always observation," he said with a shrug. "Visual and audio," he continued. "You have to assume they hear every conversation, watch every move. They wouldn't put us here to observe us and not cover all their bases.

"Think about it."

Broad shoulders rose and fell in a shrug at his question. "The ones that were buried were killed on site. Casualties of the reavers. You have to assume the ones that are gone are dead in a lab, because they sure as hell aren't sending us home. We know too much." He smirked at that thought before he glanced away. Maybe they'd lobotomize them or wipe their memories or something before sending them back, but Chase didn't honestly think anyone was actually getting home.

"Maybe they're just being held for a really long time and ... they'll be back someday." Maybe changed. Maybe not.

He did think about it, and often. It was a disturbing thing to see that video, to see events- false as they were- supposedly occurring after the fact. They had capabilities only dreamed of in his era, and how he wanted to know more about those.

"Where I am from- my time, or my world, whatever it is- there was no way to watch people without being present. These things they use did not exist there... or then. I must remember it, as I have heard others mention that they see all." He was silent for a moment as he thought on it; did they have no privacy even for their most private moments? "Are you saying there is no area on this island- in our rooms- they cannot see?"

He also struck a chord when he mentioned others being dead in a lab; it triggered the memory of Matt writing that he could lock Katrina in a lab and keep her sedated, but that they would likely operate. It was a fate he wished on no one, and the momentary lapse of composure was quickly recovered. "There is nothing that can be done for those who are gone," he said as he looked back at Chase, "nor those who are content with remaining as experiments. I am not content, and I will not lie in wait for the next terror without trying. They cannot keep this place forever."

Or maybe they could; if they killed everyone who came, who could be left to stop them?

Chase shook his head. "They probably have cameras in the bathrooms. In the showers." He didn't know, had no way of knowing, but he assumed. It wasn't as if their captors had shown any kind of regard for privacy so far, so why should anyone think that every single sleeping and waking moment wasn't being filmed?

Sure, maybe they drew the line at cameras in the bathroom and shower, but maybe they didn't.

A slow grin spread over his lips. "But, most everyone here has something to keep them complacent. Or someone." He let that sink in for a moment. "You try something, try to get out, and who do you think they'll take it out on?"

He was really just talking, making up things that sounded good (and probably weren't far from the truth), but he thought that might strike a chord with Icky. "Me, I don't have anyone to worry about. I do stupid shit, try to get off this island, and the worst that happens is I die. But you know what? I'd rather be dead than some rat in a cage."

What he suggested made perfect sense from a criminal point of view; it was not as though he had not witnessed such things before. Ichabod was not entirely naive, nor was he a true optimist, but there was a part of him that had hoped that he and Katrina had experienced their fill of nightmares in Sleepy Hollow. It was never his intention to put her in a position where she could be harmed by his actions, but it certainly explained why she was here now, with him.

"Yet you are still here," Ichabod noted when Chase made his last statement. "Try as you might you remain alive. If they had intended to kill us all, why do you think that you live?"

Ichabod took a step back and motioned to Chase, "You seem whole and healed, Mr. Collins. I would think that if they desired your death, one of your exploits would have succeeded in it and you too would have been sharing that small graveyard. I doubt it is coincidence, sir; have you given thought to that?"

"I'm just better than them," Chase said. "Smarter." He grinned. "Stronger. Not dumb enough to fight when I'm in a trap. Not so stupid as to push the sharks guarding the perimeter. Didn't fight the ... whatever the hell impaled me at the old place. Jumped out of the acid."

He shrugged. "I've tested the boundaries. Haven't tried my hand at an actual escape." Which was bullshit. Each and every attempt had been him trying to escape. He just ... wasn't stupid. Sure, he could've tried to keep swimming when his legs were going numb, but it seemed smarter to go back and try again later.

Sure, he could've tried to get through the sharks and wound up as so much chum afterward, but ... he just wanted to see where the lines were here, and come up with a better plan to get past them.

Was there something past the sharks? Probably. Would he find out? You bet your ass. Chase grinned to his thoughts.

"Honestly? I think they keep me around for amusement. They know I'll do the dumb shit like test the edges and find the traps. They want to see if I'll get past it. If I do, my head'll wind up in a jar like that girl's did when she made it past their lines.

"But then at least you guys will know." There might have been a tinge of wistful sorrow to his voice, but he'd deny that to his dying day. Which, if he kept this up, wouldn't be too far off.

Ichabod smiled, a soft laugh when he said he was faster and smarter, though it was not intending to offend. Perhaps he was; he still lived despite these things he said he'd done. Then again- as he said- maybe they were just amused with his attempts.

"I think there must be a better way than ending a life," he offered, noting how Chase's tone occasionally changed, but never for more than an instant. "Unless dying is your goal. There are faster and easier ways to do it- far less painful, but I find that causing one's own death is considered cowardly. It takes greater strength to face problems and find a solution that does not result in death... or as much as possible."

His own words at the end of the statement were a little less sure than he would have liked them to sound. How many deaths had occurred before his investigation had come to its conclusion? More than had happened prior to his arrival, and answering for that had not been the most enjoyable experience of his life- nor was it the most truthful. It wasn't the same thing though.

"But tell me, if you were to escape... how would anyone know- or does that matter?"

Chase's lips curved into a sort of pout sort of frown as he shook his head. "Not a goal," he said. "I'm not much for planning and dicking around and chatting strategy," the last was said with a slightly derisive tone. He wasn't patient enough to consider options, one by one, elminating them for whatever reason. He wanted to just plunge in and see where things took him. He set his sights on his goal and bulled through toward it.

Chase actually looked thoughtful about that. How would they know? A slow, slightly twisted grin curved his lips. "Guess you wouldn't. There's no one here I'd come back for if I did get out. So I guess you'll either find a body or assume I made it."

Obviously, those were the only two viable options. Being taken away like the others to parts unknown clearly wasn't on the menu for Chase Goodwin Collins.

The young man seemed quite set and satisfied with the way he was going about things, and the fact that he continually declared that he did not care about the others or what they thought. Perhaps that was the way things were here, and Chase was simply direct enough to state it.

"If this is the your intent, I pray I never find your body," Ichabod replied. Not that he would not see to his respectful burial, but if he were to vanish Ichabod hoped it would be due to finally finding a way out. If he was never seen again, no one would ever have that answer.

"If I do, rest assured that I would see it interred properly." It always seemed almost tasteless to mention such things, but in his time death was so common it was not given a second thought- unless it was a murder.

"Would you consider making a list of things you have tried?" he asked, although he thought he knew what the answer might be. "You may not be the sort to make lists, but I am- and while you may not wish to help I must ask."

Chase shook his head. He was a little amused at the offer to see he was properly buried, but it wasn't like he'd know what would happen to his body afterward.

He rolled his shoulders at the request and pretended to consider it for a moment. "Here? I haven't tried anything but swimming out and saying hi to the sharks. If you're talking about the old place ... that doesn't matter anymore."

Even if it did matter, he wasn't keen on sharing stories of acid and being numbed in the water in an attempt to escape. Not when Ichabod could ask anyone here; the stories had spread, after all and he was sure anyone who'd heard would be happy to recount the tale of Chase's woe.

It wasn't like any of them were his friends, or anything.

"No, that is true," he said in reply to his comment about the old place. Very little of what happened there had any bearing upon this place.

"But should you decide that you would at least leave a message should you attempt something... rash, you may leave it to me. I suspect I could not stop you, but I would investigate after I find it." After all, if he lived he might need assistance, and if he vanished due to his own actions... that needed to be known too. It was practical, at the very least.
