Characters: Jake, Oy
Time/Date: afternoon, October 24
Location: Outside, west of the hotel
Warnings/Rating: none, really
Summary: Jake ponders 19, coincidence, and the nature of captivity
Status: Closed
Jake watched Oy as the bumbler stalked something small and scaly to the edge of the brush before pouncing on it. Impassively, he watched as the bumbler happily snacked on the little lizard he'd caught before Jake grinned slightly. Here, at least, he didn't have to worry about Oy not having anything to eat. Or getting bored; the bumbler had been quite happy to hunt.
Jake himself was a little busy pondering. Now that they'd had some time to really get settled in, he was mulling over the name of the island and trying to decipher how significant he should consider it. He hadn't believed in coincidences for a while. Everything was 19, everything served the beam, and that was the truth, say thank ya.
So what was the reasoning behind the name? This wasn't the Algul Siento. This wasn't where they'd fought the taheen. This wasn't where Eddie died. This wasn't Thunderclap, End-World, or anything like it. This wasn't the Keystone world, either, which explained a lot of things about ... well, the fact he was alive and Oy -- who he was almost certain also remembered dying -- was still alive.
But if it so obviously wasn't End-World, why the name? Why? To drive him crazy? To force the memories of that final bloody battle, of that one shot that shouldn't have happened, to recall the hole in Eddie's head? To make him think of the Thunderclap, of the Calla, of Benny? It couldn't just be about him though.
Could it?
It was maddening, and he wished Eddie or Suze or Roland or even Ted or Dinky were here. Someone to talk to, someone to help him make sense of this. Someone to tell him he wasn't going crazy (again). But there wasn't anyone like that here, and the one person he'd really made friends with was ... gone.
Alive, he hoped, but oh, how he doubted that.
Jake glanced up as the ran started to patter again, and he stepped under the overhang of a leaf to watch. The showers seemed to be mostly intermittent; when it passed, he'd start back toward the hotel.
