RP: So, it's not a dream ...
Characters: Mercy, Sev
Time/Date: Evening, October 8
Location: library
Warnings/Rating: None anticipated
Summary: Mercy has concluded this isn't actually a dream
Status: Complete

After the music had died, she'd been pleased. She wasn't sure what she was meant to expect for the following week, and while she'd seen a couple of questionable entries that implied something might be going on, it wasn't anything to affect her.

She also didn't know a lot of people here very well, so it wasn't as though she exactly felt comfortable hitting them up for conversations.

While she'd thought a lot about Severus, she hadn't quite managed to run into him for any extensive period of time. Which, she supposed, was just as well while she was settling in. She'd taken a couple of days to thoroughly explore the island, another couple of days holed up in her room while she gave her sanity serious contemplation, another day or so just wandering around in a daze, and then ... the week was nearly over.

She had met a few people in her wandering. She'd had a decent conversation with a Lily who was a friend of Severus, and who she'd been hard pressed not to badger for information about him. But then, Lily didn't exactly strike her as the sort to spill too much information about another person anyway.

She'd also met Dug, who quickly put an end to the mystery of what dogs would say if they could talk. Strangely enough, it wasn't so very far off from what Mercy had always imagined dogs saying.

Now though, she was done seeking out random people, and she was ready to let random people find her. Carrying her current book in progress to the library, Mercy plopped herself down into a chair and opened up the book. She was fairly certain that she'd be interrupted in no more than ten minutes, and she set the timer on her watch to see if she'd win that bet or not.

"Indeed," Severus answered with a quiet snigger. Though he supposed, technically, he was a bad sort of stalker, as well -- in the sense of being rubbish at it -- but that didn't seem to matter. She had been patient enough to bear with him until they'd gotten past the need for it anyway. He smiled when she said he was far more interesting than her book, though considering her assessment of that book, it might not have been the highest of compliments. Still, he would take it and be glad for it. "That does sound fair," he answered with a nod and a mock serious expression.

When Mercy rose and offered her hand, he took hold of it, slipping his fingers around hers without hesitation. But then ... well, there was something else he wanted to do first. She would likely think it was silly, or at the least exceedingly old-fashioned. Severus had almost convinced himself not to do it, in fact, but then he threw caution to the wind. He drew her hand to his mouth and pressed a light kiss against her knuckles before rising from his chair. And he did not release her hand, either, as he answered, "No, I didn't. Or at least, nothing else." Then he jerked his head toward the library door with a quiet, "Shall we?"

Mercedes watched with a sort of amused interest as he kissed the back of her hand. It wasn't as though she'd never had anyone do that before (high school boys trying to be charming, back in the day), but somehow it seemed more gallant when he did it.

"We shall," she agreed as she lightly laced her fingers with his. It simply felt more comfortable to hold hands that way, and she didn't think too much more beyond that, as far as the positioning of her hand within his.

"Where shall we walk to?" she inquired. "The wrecked shack? The rotting shack? The shack that Jack built and someone else knocked over?" She grinned a little. She actually had no idea who'd been doing the improvements on one of the little shacks she'd wandered by, but it had definitely appeared worked-on.

Severus smiled as Mercy's fingers intertwined with his own. That was ... nice. Just then he thought he should probably be a bit concerned that, with his extensive vocabulary, 'nice' was the only word that sprang to mind. But it was nice. Very nice. Perhaps he would think of a more advanced adjective to describe it later, but 'nice' would do, for now.

"If it's the shack I'm thinking of," he answered, turning his head to face her with a grin, "Hulk knocked it over. But wherever you wish to go is fine with me. I'm not all that particular." Well, he was quite particular, as a rule -- about a number of things, actually -- but not this. As long as Mercy's delicate little hand was in his, he didn't care where they went.

"Well then, we can just wander about until we get bored," she offered with a sly smile. Or until they found a convenient dark place in which they could pretend they were teenagers again and make out. Not that she was going to angle for anything like that, of course. She was far too proper and the like.

"Someone ... here knocked it over, really? But ..." Her brow furrowed a little. Well, it took all kinds, didn't it? If there was magic, maybe there were people that were ... super-strong. Given the name Hulk, Mercy was envisioning some sort of muscle-bound giant. One of those could very easily knock a house down.

"Well, I suppose as long as he doesn't knock the hotel over ..." She smiled up to Severus as she started to lead him out of the library.

Severus wondered what that smile of hers was about, but he decided not to ask. He would likely find out eventually anyway ... if he didn't put her off him, first. Or bore her to tears, because he wasn't very interesting, whatever mistaken impression she might have so far. Granted, she hadn't ever met a wizard before, that she knew of, but there were other wizards here who were a damn sight more intriguing that he was.

He nodded when she asked if someone had indeed knocked the shack down, but then he gave a slight shrug. "I don't think he will," he answered, shaking his head. For one thing, he didn't imagine even Hulk was strong enough to do that, but for another ... "He only knocked that shack over because it was uninhabited. He said that he didn't want to hurt anyone, and I believe him." Perhaps that was a bit naïve of him, but he did.

"Ah," Mercy said. She ... supposed that made sense. Didn't want to hurt anyone, so he'd only knock over the buildings no one was living in. Check. He wasn't going to knock over the hotel, which also made sense as it was somewhat larger than the shacks.

Stepping out the front door alongside him, she started down the steps with him. She looked around and tilted her head to one side. "You can tell it's all ... artificial air," she commented. "Can't you?" Maybe it was just her and her country (well, sort of country) upbringing, but she thought she'd be able to tell the difference between actual fresh air and recycled air. This didn't have the scents associated with fresh air. Or ocean air, even, if they were on an island as had been heavily implied. As a quick walk around would also imply.

"It doesn't smell like Scotland, that's for sure," Severus answered with a smirk. Not to mention, if they were in Scotland, they would probably be able to see their breath already, at this time of year. On the other had, if they'd been in Scotland, he would have had a good excuse to put his arm around her, if she got cold. Pity.

"Or Manchester, for that matter," he continued, with a slight shrug. The air there was, for lack of a better word, gritty. Once they'd reached the bottom of the steps, he glanced around, raising his eyebrows. "Which way would you like to go?" Again, he didn't particularly care, so it was the lady's choice, as far as he was concerned.

Blue eyes shifted again as she surveyed the lay of the land and their options. "Eenie meenie miney moe ..." she chanted playfully before she laughed and started down off the steps to head straight ahead. She reasoned in this place, there really wasn't much by way of scenery. She'd done the stores and the mall and while she'd explored around the edges a bit, she thought she'd hit a straight shot down the middle to see what they could see.

"But no, it doesn't smell at all like the country. Or even the cities I drive through now and again. It smells kind of like ... nothing at all." She exhaled. "Like an office building or ... some sort of factory where they make scentless things that have no smell at all. Dry, tasteless air."

She paused. "All things considered, I should be glad we have air to breathe at all, shouldn't I?" She smirked a little and wondered if there'd ever come a time when they wouldn't. Or if the supply of new air would be cut off. What then?

"Tasteless is a good word for it," Severus said, nodding once more. He had been thinking bland. Even the moldy air in the dungeons at Hogwarts had more character. But then he gave a dark chuckle when she mentioned being glad to have any air at all. "Probably," he replied. That was a wholly depressing topic, however, so he tried for a change of subject.

"Which cities?" Severus asked, but then he shook his head a second later. "I don't know Pennsylvania very well, I'm afraid. Or at all, really. What's it like there?"

"It is ... like ... Pennsylvania." She laughed. "I don't know what sort of point of reference to use, honestly. We have forests and farms, and a few larger cities, lots of woodlands. We've got a mountain range in the northern part of the state. Lots of parks and things like that. Nothing like New York or anything." She paused. "Oh, we do have Hershey Park. Lots of chocolate there."

Mercy grinned. "It's a nice place. Good weather. Blizzards sometimes, but who doesn't have that every once in a while?" She shrugged a little. "The area I live in is nice, anyway. But I've never been much of a city girl, so I like my big sprawling stretches of nothing between farmhouses."

Severus chuckled when she said it was like Pennsylvania. That certainly elucidated matters. Of course, he'd never been to New York, either, so that didn't help him much, but the rest he could picture quite clearly. Especially the chocolate, and he tried not to pull a face at the idea of loads of chocolate. He'd had quite enough of chocolate, lately.

"It sounds lovely," he commented, with a soft smile. "I never particularly care for cities, either, even if I grew up in one." Severus shrugged a little himself, and then added, "So, I suppose I ought to tell you about Scotland now, if you're interested?" raising his eyebrows. Of course, it had only just dawned that he hadn't mentioned that was where Hogwarts was, but she had probably gathered that much.

"Oh no. I know everything I need to know about Scotland. The Loch Ness Monster is from there," she informed him sagely. "And bagpipes. That's all anyone needs to know, right?" She grinned as she bumped him gently with her shoulder as they strolled along.

"I've never been," she admitted. "I haven't even really been out of the north eastern part of the States, except for one spring break down in Florida. Decided I wasn't really a fan of drinking because I tended to lose a lot of clothing when I did that. There were pictures. There probably still are pictures, floating around somewhere." Mercy nodded. "And you think I would have caught on after the first three times, but no, no. It took me four to decide drinking was better left to private areas or moderation. Neither of which I was apparently very good at."

"She is indeed," Severus answered, shaking his head with a snigger, when she mentioned Nessie. He thought about explaining how the Loch Ness Monster was really a kelpie, but that seemed to be her teasing but diplomatic way of saying that she wasn't really interested. Which was fine. He found Scotland rather boring, himself, even if it was home. For most of the year, anyway.

His eyebrows rose again, for a different reason entirely, when Mercy started talking about Florida, and drinking, and clothes coming off. He wasn't sure what to say in response to that, or indeed if he ought to say anything at all. In fact, he had just opted for not saying anything at all when his mouth decided to carry on without him. "Maybe we ought to go back to the hotel, then. I saw a bottle of wine in one of the kitchen cupboards earlier."

No, he shouldn't have said anything, as his cheeks informed him not two seconds after he had finished speaking, by growing impossibly hot. Pity his mouth had had other plans.

Mercy nodded slightly, half expecting him to elaborate, but ... well. Maybe he just didn't want to talk about it. Or he found talking about her naked more interesting. She thought there must be a joke in there somewhere about how she couldn't possibly be more interesting than an entire country, but she let it slide.

"Well, you don't have to get me drunk to get my clothes off," she said point-blank in her oh so tactful way. "Then, it saves me the hangover and lack of memories part of the event," she continued.

She really didn't like to think that he was the sort of guy who had to have a girl drunk for their to be anything involved. He certainly didn't strike her as that sort of person, but then, she wasn't always the quickest judge of character.

All right -- he only thought his cheeks had been impossibly hot before, because now they were positively on fire. Though Mercy would probably be grateful for that lack of memories thing, considering he was bound to be wretched the first time. Or the first several times.

He definitely shouldn't have said anything, because now Severus hadn't the first clue what to say. His mouth opened a couple of times, regardless, only for him to snap his jaw shut a second later. So now he was doing an uncanny impression of a fish out of water, on top of everything else. Brilliant. Just brilliant.

Still, he supposed in a way that was good to know, even if the idea of getting her clothes off made him dreadfully nervous. They hadn't even kissed yet, for Merlin's sake. On the other hand, that probably meant the goodnight kiss was a given. The thought of which also made him nervous, and for much the same reason. Bloody hell.

While it probably wasn't right or proper in the least to laugh at his expression and the flush in his cheeks, it was very difficult not to. Mercy lifted her free hand to her mouth to cover the grin even as she squeezed his hand lightly with the one that was laced with his.

"Too fast, hm?" she said as she dropped her hand once she thought she had her expression more or less schooled.

"Well, all right. I'll keep my clothes on a bit longer then," she said as she turned her eyes to survey their surroundings. Bleak, barren, line-encircled captivity. Oh, how she loved this. "Any particular points of interest in the area?" She was eyeing one of the sturdier looking shacks contemplatively, but maybe even making out would be a bit much for him. Or he'd get the wrong impression. It wasn't as though she'd known him very long, after all.

If it had been anyone else, Severus likely would have taken her attempts not to be amused at his discomfiture very badly indeed. But he knew that Mercy hadn't meant it in a derisive manner at all. The gentle squeeze to his hand said that much, which frankly wasn't quite what he was used to. The change was a decidedly refreshing one, he had to admit.

"Possibly, just a little," he answered, shaking his head. And when she mentioned keeping her clothes on a bit longer, he nodded with a quiet, "Probably a good idea -- at least until we get indoors." Of course, he'd meant the last bit teasingly, and it was only afterward that he noticed she was looking at one of the nearby shacks. He tried not to wince at the unintentional implications, because really, that wasn't what he was about here. Or at least not entirely. As much as he would have liked to see her in some state of undress ... he would probably have to work up to the idea, because of his dreadful nerves.

Points of interest ... the first thing that sprang to mind was to ask if she meant apart from her. Considering his previous gaffe, however, Severus decided to answer with a non-committal, "None that I've seen." Then he exhaled a quiet sigh through his nose. He was mucking things up from beginning to end, wasn't he? And if he continued on this way, this first date was going to be their last, as well, and likely a short one, at that.

A highly inappropriate 'your room or mine' sprung to mind, but she wisely kept her mouth closed. She really probably should slow down and stop acting like such a hussy.

She wasn't one, after all, though by now she wouldn't be surprised to find he might think her one.

"No, there really doesn't seem to really be much of interest around here," she admitted. "Aside from the given of the people. Some of them, at any rate. They really need to get some landscapers in her to do something about the scenery."

She grinned to him as she briefly tightened her fingers against his. This really was kind of pleasant, and it was nice to just ... walk with him.

"Oh, I don't know about that," Severus answered slowly, with a slight shrug. "I think the scenery has vastly improved within just the past week or so." He turned his head to smile at her, just as Mercy squeezed his hand again. Then he sighed again, but this one wasn't quite as hopeless as the one that came before. More contended than anything.

The island itself likely didn't have much to hold her interest, but perhaps he could. Severus felt his eyebrows rise again when he realized he'd just thought that, too. It was rather a more optimistic type of thought than he was used to having. But he hadn't seemed to put her off him yet, and part of him was wondering why. Another part of him was simply waiting for it to happen, as well. But a third part of him -- quieter by far than the others, of course -- dared to hope that he wouldn't.

Mercy grinned before she lifted her brows slightly. "Oh? What's happened in the past week or so? They put in some new rocks? Different shade of dirt, maybe? Brightened up that line?" She bumped him playfully with her shoulder as they strolled along.

Oh, she knew what he was saying, really, but teasing was fun. At least, she thought it was, and so far, he hadn't exhibited obvious protest to her more innocent teasing.

All the same, it was nice to think he found her a refreshing change of scenery.

As they passed by one of the sturdier looking shacks, Mercy tugged his hand lightly as she headed over toward it. Just to innocently explore, of course.

"I think the line might be a shade or two brighter, actually, now you mention it," Severus said, craning his neck as if he were straining to look. But then he turned his head to smile at her once more. He didn't need to explain, he knew. She had not only had taken his meaning, but she had also taken his meaning as the compliment he'd intended.

His eyebrows rose yet again as Mercy tugged him toward the shack -- and his stomach turned a flip, as well -- but Severus followed along quite willingly. In spite of what he'd said earlier, he sincerely doubted any clothes would be coming off inside the shack. Probably the most he could hope for was a nice long snog. Or at least nice for him. He was liable to be dreadful at that, too, but hopefully he wouldn't be bad enough to put her off him with that alone.

"So they paint it periodically? Or bleach it, or ... something?" She grinned, doubting they did anything of the sort even if the line actually had looked brighter.

Which she doubted.

"White-wash it, maybe," she continued thoughtfully as she released his hand to push open the door of the shack. She peered inside and made a slight face. It was definitely dirty in there.

"Are these places stable, do you know?" She asked quietly as she took a cautious step inside. She leaned her weight on one foot, bearing down -- and then leaping backward when the board dared creak.

Flushing at her over-reaction to a perfectly normal settling noise, she laughed softly as she glanced up to him. "Suppose I should wait for an answer before adventuring."

"Probably," Severus answered, nodding sagely, when Mercy suggested whitewash. He was more disappointed than he'd expected to be when she released his hand and stepped away, even if he knew, logically, that it was only to open the door. He too pulled a face at the thick layer of dust inside, and he also had to fight down the urge to sneeze.

"I wouldn't know," he said, shaking his head as he stepped forward to follow her. But just then, Mercy leaped backward again, almost colliding with him. He placed a hand on her back to reassure her, though why he thought it would do so, he wasn't entirely sure. Perhaps he simply wanted to touch her. Actually, on second thought, that was very likely. "I can cast a charm to stabilize it, if you're worried," he said quietly, with a small smile, when she looked up at him.

"Do you have a charm for everything?" she inquired, a little hitch in her breath as she attempted to recover from the little scare. "It's probably fine ..." she murmured as she peeked in, peering down toward the floor. "I ... was just startled, that's all," she added as she turned away from the shack to regard him.

"Though all things considered, maybe we should head back in and ... save the shack explorations for some other point in the future." A point when she wasn't going to be jumping like a cat at every noise.

In fairness to her, she'd heard around that someone had fallen through a floor or off a roof or something, and honestly, the things just didn't look that stable to her.

"Not everything, no," Severus said, shaking his head slightly. "Just -- most things." He started to drop his hand to his side when Mercy stepped away to peek into the shack once more, but before he knew it, she'd come right back. When she admitted to having been startled, he nodded, though really, that had been blatantly obvious. Still, he stroked his hand lightly up and down her back, as well, in order to comfort her. Whether it was working remained to be seen, of course, but he was enjoying it. That much was certain.

"All right," he agreed, nodding once more, and Severus only just resisted the urge to pull her into a cuddle. Instead he turned, with his hand still on her back, and gestured with his other hand in the direction of the hotel. Perhaps she had simply had quite enough of him for one evening. Or perhaps she had expected him to go in first. Or ... oh, it didn't matter. If he'd mucked things up, he'd mucked things up, and analyzing how after the fact really wouldn't do him much good, now would it?
