Balthazar was perplexed by her first question. He couldn't imagine a scenario that would result in him knowingly leaving a gift for a former love lying in wait to be found by his current lover. Perhaps if he was suicidal? Out of his mind?
"I did not," he answered calmly as he pushed himself into a sitting position, shifting to face her. This seemed a rather delicate matter to be speaking about sprawled naked, in bed. "This is the first time I've seen it since my arrival.
"But yes. It was for her," he replied honestly, softly. He didn't quite know what to think about it showing up now. Did it mean Veronica was going to arrive as well? Were they just trying to create strife? It wasn't as if he needed a reminder about the other woman. He thought about her often enough, though the context of the thoughts had been shifting ever since he met Lily. He longed for Veronica less as a lost love and more as a friend in need who had been trapped for far too long.
"They're just trying to get to us, Lily," he added in a stronger voice, and while he didn't know for sure, that was what he choose to believe at the moment.
