RP: To Make a Potion
Characters: Lily Luna, Severus
Time/Date: Afternoonish, September 30
Location: His room, hallway, lobby, garden, and back again
Warnings/Rating: None
Summary: LilyLu drops off some ingredients
Status: Complete

It was kind of weird, and she felt kind of weird about it, but honestly. Why should she fumble through a potion when there was a perfectly good potions master sharing the hotel with them? Granted, her grandmother could do it as well, but LilyLu thought her grandmother had enough to do with worrying about meals and the like.

She'd tipped the ingredients from the cauldron onto the desk and sorted through them. To her, it looked like at least six months worth ... unless it was being shared around with some of the others. Which, really, she didn't mind as long as their captors were going to keep shuffling ingredients over for the potion to be made. They were apparently pretty good about keeping people in Wolfsbane potion, though admittedly not having that would be significantly more disastrous than her having to use Muggle means of protection.

She also kind of wanted to ask him for more details about the charm, maybe see what wand motions went with it and if she was supposed to feel something when she tried it. It would really suck if she used that particular charm and did it wrong.

Sweeping the vials and bundles of plants into a small box, Lily left her room and headed for the stairs. She could use the elevator, sure, but it took longer and it wasn't like going down a floor was a trial. Once she arrived at Severus' room, she knocked on the door and waited. She did glance toward her grandmother's room, but hopefully her grandmother wouldn't choose right then to wander out and ask what she was up to.

Severus had just been refreshing his memory on the potion in question when the knock sounded on his door. He abandoned the book where it lay on the desk and went to answer, giving a soft smile when he saw Miss Potter outside. "Do come in," he said, much more loudly than he would have liked, but that couldn't be avoided. Then he stepped back to allow her inside, as well as holding out a hand to relieve her of the box, if she were so inclined.

He supposed it was rather odd that he was so well versed in various forms of birth control, considering that he had personally had very little need for them. Still, he'd had numerous students in his care, and he had no doubts that any of his Slytherins who had turned up pregnant would have been quickly expelled. Whether pupils in other Houses would have been subjected to the same harsh penalties was irrelevant. His students would have been, and so he had not been about to let that happen.

"You're looking well," he added, once he'd closed the door behind her. Certainly better than the last time he'd seen her, at any rate. Then again, no one had looked especially well whilst the Dementors had been roaming about the island.

Lily offered over the box while peering curiously around Severus' room. For whatever reason, she'd expected it to -- somehow -- be dark and dungeon-like. It, however, appeared to be not so different from her own.

Her brow furrowed at his observation, and she wondered if he was somehow making a crack at her. She wondered if she'd missed a mark that John had left, or something else like that. She'd gotten the super noticeable one on her throat with a concealing charm, so she doubted that was the case.

Then she recalled that he'd been present for her passing-out escapades, and she flushed slightly. Right. There was that. She shrugged and lifted her voice. "The music's not as terrifying as the dementors. Bit more annoying though," she added before her lips quirked into a half-smile.

"That's all the stuff they left me," she said with a nod toward the box.

Did she just actually frown when he said that she was looking well? Severus suddenly wanted to add, quite sarcastically, that she should excuse him for showing concern, but he stopped himself. She might have only been embarrassed at her reaction to the Dementors, after all. Her father had certainly been, judging by Harry's voice in that recording. Not to mention if she had been in Gryffindor, she would likely have expected to be able to endure anything, however misguided such a thought might be. Besides, he was certain the urge to snap at her was only because of this constant music, which was making him quite irritable. So instead, he merely took the box from her with a nod and began to examine the ingredients.

Everything appeared to be there, except ... the belladonna they had given her was useless. Quite wilted, with discolored leaves, which would have none of the requisite alkaloids. He scowled at the plants as he lifted them out of the box, one by one, and tossed them into the rubbish bin. Were they actively trying to get her pregnant? That was -- well, the very thought made him exceptionally angry. There was observing, and there was observing, and intentionally tricking a woman into conceiving a child because she didn't know better -- when she was obviously trying to prevent that very thing -- was beyond the pale.

"We'll have to harvest some more belladonna from the garden," he told her then, the impatience and pique clearly sounding in his tone. "Those are quite useless."

She watched in confusion as he started to chuck some -- no, all -- of one of the plants. Her lips parted to protest; she was fairly certain they needed that ... but then he explained.

And she suddenly felt a little ill. Would she have known? Or guessed? Would she have worked out that the plants that looked all crappy and wilty were in fact useless? Or would she have used them anyway?

Left to her own devices, she knew she would have shrugged and kept them in the potion. Apparently, that would have been Very Bad, especially if she had no backup in place, which she hadn't intended once she'd gotten the potion.

But maybe it wasn't going to be such a bad idea if they were going to be fucking with her like this. "So what about that ... charm then? I mean, I don't know. They might disable that too, right? If they can randomly disable a simple unlocking spell ..."

Lily snorted in annoyance. "So am I supposed to feel anything with that charm? I tried it once, but I don't think I had it right." She still wanted to potion though so she gestured a little toward the door. "Were we going to the garden now then?"

"They might," Severus agreed with a nod. "Which is why it is always best to use both." Though normally, one only had to worry about something one had eaten interfering with the potion and decreasing the effectiveness. Not one's captors interfering artificially, in order to see how one of the captives might react to finding herself suddenly pregnant. Granted, syrup of hellebore could terminate any unwanted pregnancies, but he still clenched his jaw until it started to ache. At least until he heard Miss Potter's snort.

He decided, however, to answer her final question first. "We probably should." After all, they could discuss the charm along the way -- provided they didn't run into Harry, that was. Somehow he didn't think their apparent truce would extend to providing his daughter with birth control. Besides, if the rumors were true, the music wasn't quite so bad outside. He set the box down on the desk then and gestured toward the door then, with an 'after you' sort of look. They probably ought to wait and see if the coast was clear before getting into the particulars of the charm.

Lily shook her head as she turned to start out of the room. She headed toward the stairs, trotting down them and wincing at how loud it was in the stairwell. Merlin, she'd be glad when this was over. Tomorrow, supposedly, if they kept to the established schedule, and there was some relief in that.

When she caught herself humming along to one of the sons she'd heard at least forty times that week, she rolled her eyes and made herself stop. "Can't wait 'til this is OVER," she shouted toward the front door as they crossed through the lobby. It was stupid and childish, but ... well, she was given to childish impulses now and again. She was a Gryffindor Potter, after all.

Opening up the back door, Lily wandered out into the garden, half expecting to see Swan there, but ... no one was there.

Brown eyes swept over the plants until she found the one labeled Belladonna, and she gestured. "Is that good then?"

Severus smiled and nodded his agreement, though he also rolled his eyes, when Miss Potter said she couldn't wait for this to be over. Neither could he. He liked his peace and quiet far too much. The constant bombardment of sound had left his shoulders perpetually tense the entire week. The rumors, however, appeared to be correct. It wasn't nearly so bad outside. Probably because the sound could not reverberate off the walls out here. Pity he didn't much care for the outdoors for the most part, as well.

"These are all fine," he answered with another nod. He had expected nothing less, however, because Miss Prescott certainly knew what she was about when it came to gardening. He bent to pluck as many belladonna plants as he'd only just chucked, though probably not as expertly as Miss Prescott would have done. "They need to be fairly fresh, as their lose their effectiveness in a matter of hours." So the sooner he started on the potion, the better.

"So is there some way to preserve them then? Or they deliberately gave me bad ones? Why would they want to try to get me knocked up? That's what would have happened, right? If I'd made the potions and used the bad plants?"

She assumed as much at any rate, and it was kind of infuriating that someone would deliberately try to sabotage her sexcapades. She was doing this because she didn't want children. And for the bonus side-effects of not having any sort of monthly disruption to said sexcapades.

Lily sighed and crossed her arms over her chest. This place ... she just couldn't believes the depths to which their captors apparently could so willingly sink.

"That is exactly what would have happened," Severus answered with a curt nod, but then he shook his head. "And they would have done because they are sadistic cretins." Finally, he took a deep breath, exhaling with a sigh. "So we'd best discuss that charm, I think." Even if he did often find these conversations a touch embarrassing. Especially since all his knowledge on the subject of sex was entirely academic.

He cleared his throat, jerking his head toward the hotel. "One of my students refused to use the charm," he began, starting in that direction. "Because she said -- and I quote -- it felt 'squirmy'. So I can only assume when cast properly, the spell causes involuntary spasms in the uterus. Evidently, that is how you will know when you've got it right."

Lily giggled. She couldn't help it. Squirmy. She'd have to pass that one along to John, but ... at least she knew she'd know there was some way to tell she'd done it properly. Lily followed along with him, hands sliding into her pockets as she glanced around at the garden. It really was nice out here ... if one ignored the thrumming, pounding music.

As if one could ignore that.

"Well, good to know then that there'd be something to let me know," she said, possibly not loud enough for him to hear, but it didn't really matter if he heard that part or not.

Her eyes closed as the song trailed off to its end. She enjoyed the half-second pause of silence before the next one started up. "D'you know how many songs they're playing? Twenty. On an infinite random cycle. The only thing that would make this worse is if they had fewer songs. Or the very same one over and over."

Severus saw, rather than heard, the giggle, and he smiled in response, but he missed the next thing Miss Potter said. But he wasn't quite finished, anyway. "You will probably want to practice whilst looking in the mirror," he continued, pulling his wand to show her the details. "And you will need to -- encircle your uterus twice, with each word of the incantation, like so. Protego--" He rotated his wrist once, with a little flick at the end. "--utereo." And he repeated the action.

The tail end of the wrist action reminded him of something else, at which he happened to be rather an expert, though he was far too much of a gentleman to mention that. For that reason, it was usually best for the male partner to cast the charm, actually, but if Miss Potter had taken up with a Muggle, that likely wouldn't be an option. Besides, she would still have the squirminess, or lack thereof, to let her know whether the charm had been effective.

When she asked if he knew how many songs they had been playing, Severus shook his head. He hadn't bothered to count, even if he knew them all by heart now. Unfortunately. He'd even caught himself tapping his foot a time or two, when the volume wasn't completely earsplitting, but he would have been far too embarrassed to admit such a thing. "The same one over and over would naturally qualify as fewer," he said, however, with a smirk.

So, she clearly hadn't taken into account exactly how mortifying it would be to actually be standing and having a demonstration of the spell. Giggling was inappropriate, but she was a teenager. She did manage to keep her outburst to a few snorts. "Sorry. I know it isn't funny, but it kind of is. I mean, when did you ever think you'd be teaching one of your friends' granddaughters how to ... keep from getting knocked up?"

All the same, she watched the motion and she thought she'd drag John in to watch her practice, or see if Tris would do it for her. Or Hugo. Whichever of them was better at charms. "So, does it have to be done ... um." She paused. "Right, about to kick up the interesting factor a notch. Does it have to be done like, a certain amount of time before, or can I just ... do it in the morning and have it be set 'til ... I undo it or does it wear off after time? Is it one-use only and I have to redo it between ..." she made a 'you know' sort of gesture, brows elevating expectantly.

Giggling might have been inappropriate, but it was also to be expected, and it was nothing he hadn't experienced before. Therefore, Severus merely waited patiently for the worst Miss Potter's snorting to pass. He waved her apology aside -- because again, it was nothing unexpected -- but in response to her question, he gave a slight shrug. "I've already taught my friend's children the same, so it isn't all that different." Not that he counted the Death Eaters amongst his friends any longer, but it was close enough.

He himself snorted at her phrasing -- kicking up the interesting factor -- but then he shook his head. "The charm lasts for approximately twenty hours, so ... unless you plan to have a marathon session of a day and a half, no. I daresay you won't have to nip out in the middle of the, ah, festivities in order to cast it again."

She thought about that for a moment, deciding to take it as a challenge. She'd see if John would be up for something like that, and she grinned a little at the thought of it. But they were young, they had energy to burn, and right now? Plenty of music to cover up their noises.

"Well, right, but ..." then she decided that for him, as a professor, it probably wasn't that weird, so she let the argument go.

Armed with the charm, that just left ... the potion. "Should I come help with the potion, or just ... let you have at it?" She wasn't exactly brilliant at potions and she'd probably be more of an annoyance than an asset, but she'd leave it up to him to decide.

If he were being entirely honest with himself, Severus would have much preferred to brew the potion in peace. Not that peace was especially easy to come by these days, but that was unimportant. It wasn't that he didn't like the girl, either. She seemed pleasant enough, and it was refreshing to see her with some color in her cheeks again, as well. On the other hand...

"It probably would be beneficial for you to observe, at the very least," he answered tilting his head in a half shrug as he turned to look at her. "I imagine you likely wouldn't care to ask for your grandmother's help, at any rate, if I happen to be taken away at some point." And considering that she'd only just been asking him how often she had to renew the charm, he didn't think she would only need the potion just the one time.

Watching wasn't nearly as interesting as doing, and she'd probably get distracted halfway through and let her thoughts roam and drift ... but she'd at least try to pay attention. It wasn't as though she didn't know how to do it; she'd done it before. Maybe she hadn't conveyed that part completely? Or at all ...

"I don't mind asking her. I just ... didn't want to bother her today. She's ... busy, you know?" And she'd looked kind of worn out the last time Lily had seen her, so she hadn't wanted to further burden her with this. "I mean I can do the potion. I made it in school. I just thought that as long as I had someone around who could do it better than me, I'd ask. I'm not exactly top of the potions class." She shrugged and managed a sheepish little grin, but it was true enough.

Severus nodded when she said she had made the potion in school. He had to wonder, however, why she wouldn't have recalled that the belladonna needed to be fresh. Then he sighed softly when he realized that not everyone was a walking, talking Encyclopedia of Potions, the way he was. On the other hand, he had only just been thinking that he'd prefer to make it alone, and now he had his chance.

"I see," he answered with another nod. "Very well -- in that case, I'll make it for you. It should be ready in an hour and a half. And in the meantime," he added, raising an eyebrow, "I would suggest practicing the charm." That would likely be a much more productive way for her to spend the intervening ninety minutes, anyway.

Lily smiled cheerfully at him when he offered to make it, even if it did mean she'd have to go practice the charm. Well, she didn't have to, but it would be a good idea. Maybe she could figure out where Tristan was and ... go from there. If he could cast it and she could feel what it was supposed to feel like, she'd know when she was doing it right.

That was the plan anyway.

"If you're sure you don't mind," she said, giving him one last chance to recruit her for the job, but ... she had a feeling doing it this way was in everyone's best interests. "Should I stop in later or ... you'll bring it ... You know? I'll just stop by later." Because she wasn't sure what, exactly, she'd be up to in an hour and half, and she didn't want to create any potentially embarrassing situations by having him come up while she and John were occupied.

"I don't mind," Severus answered with a slight shake of his head. And he really didn't. Brewing would allow him to take his mind off this godawful music for a bit, and it would help him to relax as much as he possibly could in the circumstances. So he really didn't mind at all. Quite the contrary.

He gave her a small smile and a nod when she said she would simply pop 'round later to retrieve the potion. It wasn't as if he had anything better to do than hole up in his room, anyway. "You know where to find me," he answered then, with a slight shrug. Then, before she could scamper off, he added, "Good luck with the charm."

"Thanks," she called to him over the music before she turned away to head toward the stairs. She'd find John or Tristan or Hugo or ... someone and get on that practicing thing.

Then she'd go collect her potion and enlighten John about the side benefits of said potion. No monthly interruptions. It was her favorite part. Well, aside from the whole not getting knocked up bit.

As she bounded up the stairs, she found herself humming along with the song that was playing and ... didn't really care that she was.
