He'd watched the people in the infirmary, today, and it had only made him shiver with their collective despair, their fear and in some cases, the looks in their eyes. He had felt useless, helpless, a cardboard cut out of a man who could do nothing to help in this, and the stress of it slowly built, It had been, in truth, building for days, ever since these attacks had started, and David felt like, really, like nothing he did was any good here. He represented a danger to these people, and whatever else, that danger was greater than any good he could do. A responsible man would already have ended that danger.
A real man. He laughed as he wandered, not noticing his steps taking him upward, toward the roof, not seeing, by sheer chance, Harry Potter stepping away to go to the restroom for one moment, and not seeing, but definitely feeling, as he stepped onto the roof, and realized where he was, the cold and sudden increase of despair. It hit him like a ton of bricks, and he sagged to his knees, groaning. Why couldn't he just do what needed to be done? End this mockery, this stupid false life he had made and never paid for?
He crawled now, dragging himself along, toward the edge of the roof. The crannies and form of it seemingly were highlighted by a strange light, calling him, mocking him. He gritted his teeth as tears rolled down his face, and crawled. His almost supine body was pressed down against the roof as the world felt so heavy now, so very heavy.
He had never been much of a man, he knew, and his accident, caused by hubris and impatience, had propelled him to heights of stupidity and woe. And now, maybe, here, maybe, he could do what needed doing. He grasped the edge, and pulled himself to it, unable to even get up, merely laying along it now.
He looked outward, fear and despair and self-hatred warring for a top position in his mind, in a heart that was finally too full to take it. And with a cry, one full of a lifetime's worth of loathing and betrayal, he flung himself from the roof, somehow finding the strength to push out and up, and soaring outward, and then down. it seemed to take forever, and even as he fell, the stress seemed to pound in his mind and body, erasing conscious thought, and then pushing it aside as one tinder ignited; pure, unabashed rage.
He saw green and as he fell toward the ground, he slowly started to smile, and darkness shut out his vision. Rage filled him, and replaced all else, and David's mind receded and the Other came forward, body shifting as he did. And as always, he was angry. There was a boom, and the pavement shattered, creating a crater some ten feet wide and over that length deep. A figure lay stunned at the bottom of it for less than a moment, and then moved, stirring, and rising...
With a roar, Hulk leaped out of the hole Hulk was in. Puny Banner always left Hulk in bad places. Hulk hated Puny Banner, so very much. As Hulk leaped, and landed nearby on the much shorter roof next to the hotel, Hulk roared again, this time with words. "Hulk hates this place! Hulk hates Puny Banner! Hulk just wants to be left alone!"
And Hulk leaped away, rage coloring Hulk's vision as Hulk slammed into another building, this time down and through it as if it were plywood, and the rage that filled Hulk roared through Hulk's veins and Hulk smashed through walls, driven to destroy. When Hulk came out the other side, only rubble remained behind Hulk. Somewhere, something changed, and the darkness tugging at Hulk vanished. Now Hulk's rage grew brighter!
Hulk smiled as Hulk looked out over the town, a slow thing that spoke of wanton destruction given form, and Hulk leaped---
