"I've no idea," Severus answered with a slight shake of his head. Which was a complete and utter lie, of course, but if he could hoodwink the Dark Lord with all his talent at Legilimency, he imagined fooling Miss Potter would be child's play.
He looked back briefly, to make certain that Dave was still following, and then he noticed ... another doe. Damn. If he hadn't already repressed the overwhelming majority of his emotions, he likely would have been unable to look Lily in the eye just then. Thankfully, however, he was able to meet her gaze unflinchingly and then nodded at her report.
Then he nodded again, more slowly, at the look Lily threw him. He would protect them both with his life -- or his soul, if necessary, though he hoped it wouldn't come to that. "We will," he answered, his voice almost entirely devoid of inflection, just as his mind was almost entirely devoid of emotion. But if it kept them all safe, he didn't mind sounding like a near automaton, for a few hours.
