Jayne was kind of annoyed because they were under attack and he had no ruttin' ammo. The fact they couldn't shoot the things (or see them, for that matter) was irritating. The fact he was more or less stuck inside (unless he wanted to get his soul sucked) was also piquing him.
He unholstered his piece, looking at it as if that would somehow suddenly summon bullets back into it, but ... no luck. There hadn't been any luck the first dozen times he'd pulled it out, either.
Jayne was peevish, and Jayne was cranky, and Jayne cussed when the lights went out -- again. He knew it meant one of the things was outside, nearby, but he couldn't see it, so what did he care? He watched the window though as something that looked like a horse with horns went lunging by, and he sighed.
He knew those things were keeping the bad things away. There were three now, supposedly, and he guessed it was true because he was definitely feeling a little bummed. He heard it was going to get worse if they got more, but he wasn't real worried for himself. Sure, his life had been rough and he had his regrets and his dark places, but his wasn't anything near as bad as some of the folk here's lives were.
He wondered how River was going to handle this. Or Mal. Or that skittery girl who stabbed the guy her first day here. That brought a grin to Jayne's lips, and he wished he could've seen that 'stead of just hearing about it after.
Leaning back in the chair, he waited for the lights to come back on so he could continue watching the movie he'd had playing while trying not to feel utterly useless in this situation.
