RP: Cross that damn line
Characters: Yusuke and Open
Time/Date: Afternoon, June 22
Location: White line
Warnings/Rating: Yusuke's mouth maybe
Summary: Gonna cross that white line
Status: Ongoing

This whole thing was bullshit. Some scientists apparently knocked him out and brought him to this creepy ass place. Then they go and say, 'don't cross the white line or else.' Screw that. Over that line was probably the way home. He probably just had to fight some dumb ass demon and then he could free everyone. And as usual, Yusuke would have to be the one to have to fight the stupid demon. Yep, the detective of the spirit world was going to have to do the whole thing himself. Well that's why he's got the job right?

As he neared the line, his nerves began to act up a bit. Mostly just because Hiei did have a tendency to be right. Not always though, that was usually Kurama, but Hiei probably did know what he was talking about. Had he tried to cross the line yet? Doubtful. He didn't act all cocky like he does when he really knew something Yusuke didn't.

He looked at the line and smirked. Just a line. Nothing special about it. Also, he wasn't too good at sensing spirit energy or all that weird crap like that idiot Kuwabara, but he was pretty sure that he wouldn't sense anything anyways.

He began powering up a bit, just to prepare himself. He also readied his shooting finger. He might be headstrong, but he wasn't a complete idiot.

A bead of sweat dripped of his forehead as he readied himself to take the step across the line.

"Are you going to cross it?"

Lizzy hadn't been hiding, exactly. She was sitting contentedly on the ground next to one of the buildings that was near the line. She knew that she was mostly obscured from the sight of people who were approaching the line, but that was only because if they knew someone was there, they weren't as entertaining to watch, not because she was hiding. If she'd been hiding, she would have gone behind the building, you see, so she obviously wasn't hiding.

She was getting a kick out of watching how many people, per day, came up to the line and just stood there before walking away from it. She vaguely wondered if this boy would be the next one to chicken out, or if she would bare witness to one of the few people who was actually stupid enough to cross and get themselves hurt. It did happen occasionally.

In her lap was a small, dark cat who wasn't quite black and wasn't quite gray, with sparkling, knowing green eyes and a wide smile. It seemed quite content to be in her arms, and she was stroking it's back gently. It's tail flicked back and forth as it watched Yusuke calmly.

He was about to take that step when the girl spoke. "Yeah," he replied, "What's it to you?" He looked at the girl, and immediately felt a little bad for giving her such attitude. Oh well, nothing he could do about it now.

The cat was a little weird though. Kind of creepy really. It's eyes were just strange to look at. He half expected to find out it was some sort of demon, but that was doubtful. Why would a demon just let some little girl hold it like that? Of course, he had been fooled before.

"What are you doing here anyways?"

Lizzy shrugged absently. It wasn't anything to her, really, she'd just been curious. Maybe she'd picked a bad time to interrupt, but, the question had popped into her head and she had vocalized it. It was simply enough.

What was she doing here? She thought that was obvious. "I'm watching," she informed him. "Loads of people come here every day and try to cross the line and I like watching cause it's fun. People are silly," she glanced down at the cat on her lap, peering at something on the back of his head between his ears before she looked back up at Yusuke. "Most of them don't cross it, by the way. I haven't seen anyone do it lately."

She'd really only seen one person cross, come to think of it, so she didn't know if bad things happened every time or just occasionally or in some spots. She wasn't about to stick her neck out to find out though.

"I'm Lizzy, by the way," she said, offering a small wave because she was disinclined to get up at the moment. "This is Ches," she gestured to the cat, who flicked his tail again in acknowledgment and dipped his head slightly.

Yusuke listened to the girl, at least he looked as though he was. There was a chance his attention slipped a few times, but he figured he got all the important things. She was here to watch people wuss out cause she hadn't seen anyone do it in a while. "What happened last time you saw?" He asked, "All I've heard so far is acid bath." His voice remained cocky for the time being, not to say he wasn't a little freaked that he might be experiencing stuff that would bring back memories with grandma. Not the good ones too.

"Yusuke," he replied when she introduced herself, and did the cat just nod? He turned back to the line. He would wait for her answer before crossing it. He may be dumb but he wasn't Kuwabara. If someone had info he could use to be ready for whatever lied ahead, he was gonna take it.

"Mmmmm," Lizzy said thoughtfully, holding up her fingers to tick them off. "There was a glowy boy with red hair that stood there for almost the whole day before he crossed. I didn't think he was going to. Nothing happened to him," or at least, nothing she could see. "but he looked really scared and whimpery afterwards," she nodded. "There was another boy with dark hair who waved a stick over it and something came out of nowhere and tried to bite the stick. He pulled it back over though before it could. That was scary. Oh! And there was a girl with long brown hair who threw a rock over it and it got swallowed up by a pit," she nodded her head as if that covered it. "Oh, and a girl who sent blue fire over it, but it didn't do anything. She wasn't brave enough to cross though."

She frowned and shifted her legs. Ches seemed annoyed by the movement and hopped off her lap, moving over steadily towards where Yusuke was standing, and sitting on the good side of the line, swishing his tail and gazing across it. Lizzy was unperturbed by his actions, and though she watched him move she turned back to Yusuke.

She thought Yusuke was a funny name but she wasn't going to comment. That would be rude. She was just going to make fun of it in her head. That was much nicer.

Well that was certainly not promising. Chances are, he was about to really have some flashbacks of training with grandma. His palms were a little sweaty, but he still had to do it. "Sounds like a lot of fun, huh?" He said, acting cockier than he really felt.

"Well, Kid. Wish me luck." He said to her, just before taking a step over the line.

At first, he didn't think anything had happened. He brought his other foot across the line as well and gave a sigh of relief, "Nothing happened?" Not that he was going to complain. He smiled and tried to take another step. That was when the problem occurred. His foot wouldn't move. He looked down to see that his feet were melting into the ground or something. Almost like quicksand, but without the sand.

"Oh damn," he said, "Damnit, damnit, damnit!"

He pulled up with his legs as hard as possible, but every time he pulled up, they sank deeper. By the time he was done, his legs were buried up to his shins.

Lizzy could not deny that she was eager and curious to see what happened when someone crossed the line, though she couldn't decide if she cared what happened to him or not. She didn't think she did - if he was dumb enough to cross the line, he was dumb enough to suffer the consequences. But she'd see what happened. She eased her way from her spot behind the wall to get a better look at what happened.

"Good luck," she offered, crossing her arms over her chest as she watched him step over.

At first she thought it was going to be like when the glowy boy crossed, since nothing seemed to happen. And then he tried to move and she frowned, tilting her head and trying to figure out why he couldn't.

Ches let out an alarmed hiss and bolted immediately in the direction of the hotel to see if he could find help. He knew that Lizzy wouldn't be exceptionally helpful in this sort of rescue situation.

"Are... are you..." faced with the reality of having to face someone slowly sinking into quicksand before her, Lizzy found herself paralyzed with fear. "Just... just pull your legs out of it!" she all but whimpered. "Come on, just... just pull harder!" She found that she herself was also frozen, unable to do anything but watch, horrified.

Hiei had been expecting Yusuke to attempt to cross the line, and he hadn't been lying when he had said that he wanted to be there to witness the dectective's stupidity. He had found a relatively useful spot for himself on top of the mall roof, where he could use his Jagan eye to see long distances, and had been watching Yusuke's progress.

As the sand started to swallow the detective's legs, Hiei's hand tightened on his sword instinctively, fighting the urge to go immediately to offer assistance. Yusuke was the one who had gotten himself into this situation, now it was up to him to get himself out of it.

He knew in the back of his mind that he would not be able to watch his former teammate be swallowed by the sand, but he wanted to give Yusuke the opportunity to at least try to free himself. It was only honourable.

"I'm trying," he said, slightly annoyed, not at the girl, but more the situation, "I just can't get my foot to..." He heard something. A lot of somethings. "Kid, you better run."

He knew something was coming, and when the something became visible, that didn't help. There was a group of men moving towards him, each one holding a weapon of some kind. Some were makeshift, such as chains and pipes, some were more regular, knives and such. "Dammit!" He continued struggling to get his legs out. Him, he wasn't worried about, but the kid... He couldn't let her get hurt.

He focused some power into his hand to prepare to release his shotgun. He didn't want to actually kill anyone, so he was holding back a bit, but he was going to make sure it was powerful enough to make sure these punks knew who was boss. "Just stay behind me, Kid."

She couldn't run. Her legs were trembling and she was shaking too much when she heard the noises of the approaching army. She knew Yusuke was in trouble, but she couldn't move enough and knew that she couldn't help him. She was confused now as to why she'd thought it would be a bright idea for him to cross the line. She wanted him back on this side of it now, and she couldn't understand why this was happening. She wanted to cry.

Stay behind me, she understood, and she scrambled so that she was more in line behind him, hoping desperately that he knew what he was doing.

Hiei grit his teeth unpleasantly. He knew the Detective was good, but even he wouldn't be able to take down an army if he was slowly sinking into quicksand. In a few quick, simple movements and jumps, he was down from the buildings and racing over to where the Detective and the young girl were standing.

Hiding his nerves under a mask of disdain, as per usual, Hiei waited until an opportune moment and then made his presence known with a calm, "Is this part of your plan to save us all, Detective, or did you need some assistance?"

"Yeah fine, I'm an idiot," Yusuke grudgingly admitted, "Now get the girl out of here!" He wasn't sure if he would be able to hold off the group before Hiei returned, but at the moment, the girl was his main concern. She was too frightened, or stupid he wasn't sure exactly, to run.

Yusuke released his shotgun attack on the first bit of the group, but to his surprise, it did nothing. "What the Hell?" He charged again, this time giving it full power, and released it again. The area all around the people was showing signs that the attack was doing something, but somehow the army wasn't being hit.

"After that, I might take you up on that offer," he told Hiei, as he stood, with quicksand around his knees.
