RP: Harry Potter and the Oddest Day
Characters: Harry Potter and Severus Snape
Time/Date: 3 PM, 09/08
Location: Around town.
Warnings/Rating: PG
Summary: Harry's disturbed by everything that's happened, and just wants some air and time to think. On the way, He meets Snape, and they have a conversation long in the making.
Status: !Complete!

All he knew was that his father was suddenly here, and from a time when, by Harry's own observation and other people's memories, he had not been a nice guy. And that just made it worse.

If he had been older, Harry would at least have been able to relate to him a little, but with him so young, and reminding Harry of what he'd seen that day in the Pensieve, it made Harry a little twitchy. On the one hand, yes, he wanted to see his dad. On the other, what if he wasn't a good person right now?

The possibility of meeting and knowing his father was an amazing one. Being able to talk with his mother had already been a dream come true. This was... amazing. And Sirius was there, too, for whom Harry felt almost as much love and hope, and knew was, especially in this time, not a good man, exactly.

Harry had no idea what to do, and so he was out here, thinking, hoping to find inspiration.

It had been a while since Severus had had ice cream. Years ago, when he'd owned a fledgling apothecary, on the corner near Knockturn Alley, he'd often nipped out to Fortescue's for an incredibly unhealthy sundae for his lunch. And often, Fortescue had taken pity on him, and given him a sundae for free.

Ice cream wasn't the normal pudding at Hogwarts, however, so once he'd started working for Dumbledore, Severus had all but given it up. Until the other day, when he'd run into Miss Dumbledore in the kitchen, and she was having ice cream. After that, he'd started having cravings. And so, he decided to see what the gas station might have had in the way of flavors.

Unfortunately, the choices were rather limited, but he decided that he could make do with mint chocolate chip. Perhaps they might have something else, later on. So, with a pint of ice cream in hand, Severus started back toward the hotel. He frowned slightly when he met someone coming the other way. He didn't know the fellow, or at least that was what he thought at first. When he drew closer ... those eyes were unmistakable.

Severus shook his head, licking his lips, and then gave him a wry smile. "Good afternoon, Potter," he said quietly.

Harry blinked, then smiled as he recognized a visage he would never forget. He had hated this man, well, for years, wrongly, mostly.

"Hello, Snape. Out shopping?"

He grinned a bit at the ice cream, knowing it was a treat that few in the wizarding world seemed to even know about and somehow, not really surprised that Snape would be one of them. Severus had always had a way of breaking the rules in odd ways.

"How are things treating you, such as they are?" Such as they are. Such a simple phrase to stand in for being kidnapped and held and faced with someone you once and maybe still loved. Such a simple and yet utterly unsimple thing.

Severus nodded with a smirk to the 'out shopping'. It felt more like stealing, to be honest. Just as accepting sundaes from Fortescue had when he'd been down on his luck in the early days of his apothecary, when he'd oftentimes had to choose between buying ingredient or food. Even if he realized their captors were obligated to provide them with nourishment. Well, perhaps they didn't. He wouldn't be surprised if they put the test subjects through a period of forced starvation at some point.

"So far, I've little enough to complain about," he answered with a slight shrug. Being manipulated by two 'masters', with the very real possibility that if he did something wrong, it might cost lives was nothing new to him. All that had really changed was the scenery. "How about you?" he asked then, raising his eyebrows.

He hmmmed as he listened, and glanced around, thinking about this place, and about Snape's anser, and question. And finding it hard to answer. Damn.

"Other than the plight we all share, I've got no reason to really complain. Even if things are--- tense." Tense, he supposed, would be a good word.

He looked at Snape. "Ah, I assume you know that... that Sirius and --" He closed his eyes then opened them, feeling a little tired. "--and my father are here?"

There was concern in his voice and eyes as he looked at the other man. Harry wasn't the only one with wounds possibly being poked at here. Merlin bespell those scientists!

Tense was a good word for it, and Severus nodded, as well, when Potter said it. But then he noticed that Potter paused, closing his eyes, at the mention of his father and godfather.

"I did notice, as a matter of fact," he answered slowly, also noting Potter's concerned tone. That was ... interesting. He rather thought Potter would be thrilled to meet his father, at least. "They are, ah ... a bit difficult to miss."

Rather like that Blake fellow. One would have a time ignoring one of Potter or Black's dramatic entrances.

Harry chuckled. "They are, aren't they." he shot a look at Severus, and nodded. "I know I apologized for things on the net, but-- I am sorry for how I treated you all those years. I saw your memories when you were dying, and before. I know how things were. And I am grateful for all you did."

He licked his lips. "Makes it hard to be excited to see your godfather and father when the last time you saw them looking like this wasn't a good thing." His tone was not quite bitter, and he smiled, despite it. "Another reason to curse these scientists."

Severus remembered, vaguely, that Potter had expressed his wish to apologize in person. But he hadn't been quite prepared for him to spring the apology on him, just like that. When he did, Severus felt his mouth open and close a few times before he managed to even clear his throat. Though that was really all he'd wanted to hear from the boy for years, coming from the man Potter had become, it was ... humbling, to be sure.

"Thank you, Potter," he said quietly, and then he cleared his throat again, because it seemed to have developed something of a lump. "That -- means a great deal to me." He supposed he ought to apologize in turn for how he'd treated Potter when they boy had been in school, but somehow he couldn't quite bring himself to, because, well, he wasn't entirely sorry for it. He had only been trying to protect him, after all, when his incessant rule-breaking put him in harm's way.

On the other hand, Potter more than likely realized that, considering he'd said he had been more tolerant of him than he would have been, if the situation had been reversed. Before he managed to say anything else at all, however, Potter had changed the subject, back to his father and godfather. "Well, if it is any consolation at all, they likely won't treat you with anything approaching the same contempt as they treated me. You aren't ugly, greasy, and in the wrong House, after all."

Harry ducked his head for a moment, then nodded. "You're welcome." He rubbed his face and glanced around.

Harry sighed. "Yeah, maybe so. Just not the reflection of parents gone I hoped to see. I saw their spirits several times through the years, from the time they died, and... how can so few years make so much difference?"

He shrugged, turning and smiling a little.

"What've you been doing to keep sane around here?"

When Potter rubbed his face like that, Severus couldn't help smiling just a little, as well. That was a gesture his mother had often performed when she had been frustrated over something, and ... well, he'd only let himself see the fellow's father in him before just now. But that gesture was all Lily, and ... he supposed the apology he'd just given was, as well. He couldn't imagine James Potter ever apologizing to him for anything, under any circumstances. But that was neither here nor there, was it?

"Well, speaking as a teacher..." Severus said with a slight shrug, folding his arms over his chest. "I can honestly say that some of the most drastic changes take place during one's teenage years. Though I suspect we can put the lion's share of it down to your mother's influence." Of course, that didn't mean Potter had actually changed so much as he had learned to hide his more distasteful behaviors from Lily. But seeing as Harry was being kind to him, at the moment, he didn't quite have the heart to castigate his father, right in front of him.

At the question, Severus felt his eyebrows rise. "The same things I've always done to keep myself sane, I suppose," he answered, shrugging again. "Reading, making potions -- at least before they took our magic away." And talking to Lily, of course, but considering that she could actually answer him here, it sounded vastly more sane. Still, he decided not to mention having had one-sided conversations with a dead woman for years, even if it happened to be the case.

Harry nodded, thinking. It made sense, he supposed. "Thanks."

Then he chuckled. "Seems I'm still learning form you, after all these years." He shook his head. he felt awkward at this, this being adult thing, this being a friend or acquaintance to a man he'd hated once thing. It was odd, especially given the topic.

His lips witched into a smile after he glanced up at Snape. "I shouldn't tell you, but after the fact that you had been an agent for Dumbledore actually came out, Severus was the number one baby name for almost a year." It had amused him then, even as he knew it would make Snape, well, he wasn't sure what, but he was sure it was not gloat.

"About time, too," Severus quipped, with a smirk, when Harry said he was still learning from him. But really, there was nothing that could be mistaken for venom in his tone or a sneer in his expression. It was certainly a change -- for both of them, really -- but a welcome one.

When Harry mentioned his name being the most popular one for babies, however, his eyebrows rose again, further this time. "Was it really?" he asked, and then shook his head with a smile and a chuckle. "Those poor children."

Harry snorted lightly, be he flashed Snape a bare smile. Amazing. He would never have dreamed he would be joking and talking with Snape of all people.

He would never believed it, and then it had been too late, with regrets aplenty. Now... it was a wonder.

He chuckled. "It was a relief, after all the kids being named Harry for my own, ah, fame."

He stretched as he looked around. "Have you explored much?"

"I can imagine," Severus answered quietly, with a nod, which led him to something he did actually feel the need to apologize for. He sobered then, in spite of Harry's returning his smile, and cleared his throat once more. "I am sorry for nettling you regarding your fame, Harry." A second later, he frowned and shook his head. "Do you mind if I call you Harry?" Because it would be confusing to refer to both him and his father as 'Potter' and ... well, he had reason not to lump them together any longer.

When Harry asked if he'd explored much, he again shook his head. "Apart from nipping out for ice cream today," he said with a slight shrug, holding up the carton (that was now well on its way to melting), "I haven't really been out much at all." He raised his eyebrows again, curiously this time, and added, "Have you?" And he only just stopped himself from asking if -- if he wanted a spot of company, if he intended to explore, that was.

Harry nodded, smiling a tad. "Thank you. And I don't mind. I'm not sure I can get past Professor or Snape with you, after years of referring to you as one or the other, but Harry is fine, if you like."

"Only a little. Truth to tell, mostly I've been trying to get my legs back. I got stuck behind a desk the last few years, as head of Aurors, and now I'm making up for lost time." He chuckled. "If nothing else, I seem to be able to get in a spot of exercise. But I have noticed a lot of people wandering around. Waiting."

He didn't think he needed to say what they were waiting for. With a day named for when powers and weapons would be returned and maybe some people would be too... there was a lot of tension around.

"That is quite all right," Severus answered with a small smile and another shake of his head. Even when he'd been a student, what Harry actually called him had mattered much less to him than the boy's showing him a modicum of respect. It had been like pulling teeth to get a 'Professor' or 'sir' out of him then, but now? Now he was fairly teeming with respect, which was why, Severus realized, that he could see his way clear to joking with him.

Waiting ... marking time before the next test, and not trusting that this 'rest' period was all it was cracked up to be. That just about covered it, he supposed. But if Harry were the head of the Auror Department, he was much better prepared for the challenges this place would pose than most. "You know," he added after a short bit, though he paused momentarily to lick his lips. "I wanted to be an Auror once upon a time, but my Transfiguration was never quite good enough."

"I know that feeling. My, ah, potions work was a little shoddy. I got into the Aurors after the crisis, because they needed bodies, but to get to full status, I had to take some extra work in Potions, and learn a few more tricks. I was lucky, in the end, because of friends, and allies, giving me a chance to learn what I needed."

He remembered, in a strange way, every moment of those last weeks, the sacrifices, the losses, the pain, the shocks and surprises. It was, really, a surprise he had ever made it to the end of it all.

Harry chuckled. "Well, it's a shame you didn't get through the battle. I'd have made sure you got a spot, on sheer stubbornness alone." His cheeks colored. He didn't like to brag about his influence during those days, but he'd used it to make sure those who needed help, and those who had earned rewards, had gotten them. Then he'd worked hard to make sure he never had to rely on such a thing again.

"You mean my old Potions book didn't teach you everything you needed to know?" Severus asked with a smirk. But then he shook his head. It wasn't as if he could take the book with him everywhere he went, after all, and especially not to his qualification exams.

He wasn't about to address not getting through the battle -- because in a way, here, he had -- but he couldn't help noticing the flush that rose into Harry's cheeks at that admission. Using his influence to get him a job in the Auror Department? He never thought he'd see the (hypothetical) day. Harry really had done an about-face with regard to his opinion. "Thank you," he said quietly, nodding once more, and much to his surprise, his own cheeks suddenly began to feel a bit warm.

Harry snickered. "Sadly, no. I learned a lot from it, but the most important lessons were learned outside of it." He had learned more from practicing, later, but... he'd had a lot of time to learn, then.

Harry looked away, embarrassed, then and chuckled. And changed the subject. "I should perhaps let you go, before your ice cream melts. And besides, I think I might need to get some myself. It's that kind of night." He felt rather chipper, then.

Maybe there was something to be said for clearing the air and closure after all.

Severus could certainly understand that. Because, to be precise, most of the lessons he himself had learned about Potions had been outside that book, as well, at least until he'd written them in there. And he didn't even want to get started on that rubbish regarding Golpalott's Third Law. (Because one would naturally have ninety minutes or more to produce an antidote to a blended poison before the victim died.)

"Probably a good idea," he answered with a nod, and he almost wondered if he ought to take this pint of ice cream back to switch out with another non-melted one. If it had been anybody else -- and just thinking this made him smile again -- he might have thought he was merely being put off. But this time, he knew that wasn't the case. "The selection isn't very good, but hopefully you'll find something you like." Then he jerked his head toward the hotel, to indicate that he was heading that way. "I'll see you later, Harry."

Harry nodded, and grinned at the other man, an honest grin. "See you, Professor." And that was perhaps the first time he'd ever said it completely without disrespect.

And he turned, humming, to walk toward the store, and think some more. Maybe things could get better after all.
