RP: Where the Line Used to Be
Characters: Bella, John
Time/Date: Mid-morning, September 3
Location: Where the line used to be behind the hotel
Warnings/Rating: None
Summary: Bella is curious but untrusting
Status: Complete

There'd been a lot of posts on the network. None of them had been really funny - at least by content - but the Dave guy's post did make her grin. While she had the vague idea to go get milk to put it in the fridge in the kitchen, when she checked to see what else they might need, she saw that there really was plenty of it in there. So clearly he'd just been doing it for laughs.

But, it had worked. She'd laughed.

Since she was downstairs, she decided to go see if it was true about the line. Letting herself out the back door near the library, Bella made her way past the garden growing there (and wow, was it ever growing. Some of the plants were huge). She moved to the scuffed-looking spot that had always been just a foot or so from the line ... which really was gone. Or, invisible. Which wasn't the same thing, because if it was invisible, it was still there. She thought about stepping across where it had been, but it wasn't exactly like she trusted these people not to say it was gone and the traps were gone, and have that not be the case at all.

She was fragile and prone to accidents even when there wasn't a killer line on the ground.

So Bella crossed her arms over her chest, peering over the line and kind of hoping someone a little braver than her came along to walk across the non-line with her. Or a little ahead of her.

John still had his lighter. It wouldn't do him any good at the moment, unless he wanted to light a cigarette, but it was a comfort to have just the same. It had been bad enough to find his power had been weakened, but losing it completely was like having his arm chopped off -- or his toes, he thought with some morbid amusement.

He held the Zippo loosely in his hand as he explored, flicking the lid open and swinging it closed rhythmically until he saw a girl not horribly far away from him. She appeared to be just standing and staring which ... well, it wasn't as if there were a lot of productive activities to be done in this place, as far as he could tell.

"Is this where the line was?" John asked once he was close enough to not have to shout, coming to a stop next to her and following her gaze. He'd obviously never seen it and he was in just a little bit of denial about how dangerous the place was, but truthfully he knew that if the people in charge here had ways to steal everyone's power, they could do all kinds of crazy shit. "Think if you stare long enough it might come back?"

Bella jumped slightly when she was approached. "I ... what? Oh," she said as his words finally caught up with her distracted mind. "Yeah," she said with a gestured toward the slightly worn patch.

"Lily used to ... stand here a lot," she said as she shrugged a little. "It's why it's so ..." she made another gesture toward the ground. While she was fairly certain she knew how to finish a sentence, she wasn't completely certain it was going to happen today.

Bella glanced over to him again, actually looking at him this time. "Are you ... new?" she asked, her brow furrowing a little. It made sense, if he hadn't known where the line was before. "I'm Bella," she added as she awkwardly extended one hand bearing evidence of nerves in the appearance of raggedly chewed finger nails.

He arched a brow, a half grin quirking his lips as she explained in a way that didn't really clear anything up. But he didn't really care that Lily used to stand here a lot so he wasn't in a hurry to ask for further clarification on the issue.

"I'm new, yeah. John," he elaborated as he took her hand and shook it. He wasn't sure it was worth adding the typical 'it's nice to meet you' sort of response. Was it really nice to meet people here? No one wanted to be here, did they? If he thought too much about being stuck here, kidnapped, like a lab rat, he could feel panic rising in him like bile. So he wasn't thinking about it. Well, as much as a person could manage not to think about a situation they were stuck in.

"So you wanna go for a walk?" He asked after releasing her hand, letting his eyes flick towards the area past the no longer there line. His brows rose in question, or challenge, he wasn't completely sure. It probably wasn't a fair challenge considering that he hadn't had months to build up a fear of the line or to see first hand what things on the other side did, but there it was.

"Um. Not ... not really, no. I ... see, I don't think I'm alone in thinking ... they just took the line away to see if we'd try to cross where it used to be, and everything that was on the other side is still there and active and I just ... don't want to fall into a vat of acid or something."

Well, she was curious, sure, but she didn't want to die. With her luck, she'd probably find the one trap they "forgot" to disable and it would be something lethal.

"You ... can go ahead though. I'll watch. And then go run for help if you ... if something happens."

She was so very generous. And not at all being a chicken.

John rubbed his chin with his free hand, regarding the area that was supposedly full of traps. He knew they wouldn't have been very good traps if they were obvious, so he bit back the comment about it looking safe.

"Gee, thanks," he replied with a light roll of his eyes, but there was a little bit of wisdom there, huh? If they both went and it turned out she was right, well, they were fucked in the bad way. For a moment, he considered declining -- he didn't want to fall into a vat of acid either, honestly -- but he wasn't a pussy.

"So all right, what was it like before? Someone would cross and ... how far could they get before the traps? Did acid tubs just appear suddenly under people's feet?" He at least wanted some idea before attempting to cross.

"I ... I don't know. I never really saw anyone do it. We just heard the stories afterward. But ... I guess ... a few feet? Maybe ten or so? The ... one who fell into the acid, that was back behind the gas station. There was like, a quicksand trap, and that was off to the side of the gas station. There were bolas down at the other end of things."

Bella lapsed into silence, lifting her thumb to her lips, gnawing at the nail before dropping her hand. "Those were ... the only ones I heard about. If there were others ... people didn't talk about them."

She wondered if he was really going to do it. Then she wondered if it would prove anything. If they let one guy cross it, then other people would try, and maybe one of those people would get a surprise random trap.

No, she didn't trust this business at all.

John flicked his lighter open and closed a couple times as he gazed out past where the line had been, listening to Bella explain the traps she knew about. So it didn't sound like anyone had died, crossing the line ... that was a plus.

Anyway, it was turned off. Right? Well, he really couldn't decide whether he thought it more likely that people in charge were telling the truth or if this was some sort of test to see if they were stupid enough to fall for it. He didn't feel like he could back out now, though, even if Bella was just some chick that he'd known for two minutes.

"So in case I die out there, you wanna make out some before I go?" He asked, a teasing grin on his lips as he regarded Bella. Okay, maybe he was stalling just a little bit.

Bella watched him flick the lighter, wondering if anyone had ever gotten annoyed by that - or pointed it out if they had. Somehow, she doubted the latter.

"No," she said to his question, brow furrowing. She wondered if he was serious, but assumed he was just messing with her. Either way, she wasn't going to make out with some guy she'd just met. Not even a kiss for good luck. Especially if he was just using it as a tactic to stall.

Which she could understand. Even if he hadn't been here when the line was active, there was just something about stepping into the unknown in a strange environment.

Then she wondered if she'd join him if he made it across safely. She supposed she'd see. If nothing else, she'd drop a note on the network they'd had a success.

"You'll feel guilty if I die," he pointed out, taking a few steps towards the line that was no longer there. Turning to face her, he took careful backwards steps as he continued to speak, "But you could make it up to me by telling everyone a cool story in case I get killed by a lame trap. Say like ... twenty pirates and ten ninjas swooped down from the sky and violently murdered me."

His body was tense as he turned away from her again, managing to walk purposefully into the land past the line. Since he didn't know exactly where it had been, it was a little easier for him to just keep walking without hesitation. His grip was rather tight on his lighter, though.

Once he'd made it a decent distance, he turned back towards her. He paused for a beat as if expecting the floor to open up and swallow him before he grinned.

"Think this is far enough for me to be triumphant?" He called to her, brows raising in question.

Bella thought that was kind of right. She would probably feel guilty even if she'd had nothing at all to do with it. Well, she could've tried harder to stop him, she guessed. "Sure," she agreed to his request. Not that she thought anyone would believe it. But she'd tell them anyway.

She watched as he walked, watched as he continued past where she was pretty sure the line had been, and she held her breath as she waited for ... for what? She didn't even know. But then ... nothing happened.

Bella waited a couple of beats after he called his question to her, before she shrugged. "I guess so?" she said. She was pretty sure that was past where it had been, but she still wasn't sure she had the balls to cross herself.

So she waited a few more beats before she shook her head. "I guess ... if anything was going to happen, it would have."

He relaxed a bit more with each passing moment that he wasn't eaten by something horrible or drowned in acid until he agreed that if something was going to happen, it would have by now. A laugh that was born mostly out of relief crossed his lips.

"So what now?" He asked with a look around before waggling his brows at her. "You comin' over?"

It felt a little anti-climatic, to be honest. All that built up tension and then... nothing. Not that he wanted anything horrible to happen to himself.

"You got a marker or anything on you? I feel like I should leave a sign that I was here," he added maturely.

"I have ... some lipstick," she offered. She didn't even know why, really. She didn't really wear it much, but it had somehow wound up in the pocket of these jeans at some point, and there it was. She fished it out and started to toss it to him before deciding that was dumb. If he could walk over there, so could she.

So she did, carefully, waiting for the ground to fall out from underneath her until she was standing closer to him. Extending her hand with the tube of lipstick, she shrugged and grinned slightly. She wondered if he would leave a sign, and if anyone would see it. Or know what it was. Or care.

But hey. He'd crossed where the line had been, and now she was kind of curious herself. Maybe they'd just moved the traps farther down, but from here she could see the water. She kind of wanted to get closer, and she made a 'go on' gesture for John to lead. She wanted to get to the water, but not bad enough to lead herself.

Some lipstick? He took it with a somewhat bemused expression before he chuckled. It was better than nothing, he guessed. Now he just had to decide where to make his mark. Shrugging as she gestured for him to go on, he started to walk further into the town past the line.

"Do we have a destination in mind?" He asked curiously, glancing over his shoulder towards her. There was water out there, maybe she wanted to try swimming away.

He only kept his gaze on her a moment before looking straight ahead so he could watch where he was going. He was still just a little nervous that a vat of acid was waiting for him up ahead.

"No. I .... don't even know what's out here," she admitted. "I mean, the one time someone got past, it was just ... water. Not that she really ... explored around or anything. I guess there was some trauma involved. I didn't know her or anything."

She hesitated a minute before following after him, resisting the urge to reach out and grab his arm. She hardly knew him. Besides that, if he fell or something happened to him, she didn't want to go down with him.

"I guess we could ... find the edge and ... wander along it until we get bored," she offered and shrugged. She didn't know how far down past the line the island had extended, or what was out there, and she wasn't real willing to go too far.

John nodded and was fine with just walking, exploring, if somewhat ... cautiously. He was also keeping an eye out for somewhere that looked like a good place to graffiti with lipstick.

"So how long have you been here?" He asked curiously, glancing back at her for a longer moment. The farther they walked without something horrible happening, the more relaxed he felt and he was almost ready to believe that the scientist assholes were telling the truth and all the traps really were disabled.

Before really giving her a chance to answer, he tacked on, "Do you know Malcolm Reynolds? Old guy with no toes?"

He certainly wouldn't claim good friend status with Jaime, but she was the only familiar person here and while he had no problem at all being an asshole to her, he wasn't sure he wanted some other guy being mean to her.

Bella's lips parted to answer his question before he was firing another one at her. Her brow furrowed slightly before she shrugged. "Um. A couple of months, I guess. I'm pretty useless here. Mostly just ... hanging around my room reading or watching TV or something."

Well, except during the attack. Then she'd hid.

She shook her head to his question. "Not ... not really well. I mean, I know he was involved in helping organize the ... defenses for the attack and everything, but I don't ... talk with him or anything." But then, she didn't really talk with anyone. "Why?" she prompted, curious.

A couple months sounded way to long, in his opinion. He wondered if he should just resign himself to being here that long. While he did know better than to believe that they were really sending people home after they sorted things out, he couldn't help but hope just a little that he had been brought here by mistake.

"I guess he's dating Jaime. I know her, from home. So I was just curious, especially 'cause she said he's old," he shook his head lightly. Of course, he was picturing Mal way older than he was ... or at least way older than he looked. All Jaime had said was that he was at least twice her age, after all. For all he knew, the guy could be sixty.

He offered her the lipstick back as they walked towards the water with a half grin. He decided he didn't think it was worth trying to find something out here to write on. What was he going to do, lipstick up a tree?

Bella took the lipstick back, shaking her head. She wasn't going to say Mal wasn't old, but ... "I don't really think he's like ... that old," she said. "He's not ancient." But he was definitely past middle-aged.

"Must be nice ... to know someone from home," she offered. "I don't ... know anyone here. From home, I mean." Which apparently wasn't true. She'd gotten the feeling from various slips here and there that Edward and Alice did know her from home, though she hadn't met them yet.

"It's ... a lot of people are really friendly, and ... it's not that hard to ... make friends with people here."

Well, not ancient was ... better, he guessed. He wondered what it was about girls and old guys. Rogue had kinda been into Logan, after all, even if she never came out and said it.

"I guess," he agreed, reluctant to admit that anything about Jaime was nice. He managed not to snort when she said it wasn't difficult to make friends here. He didn't think he'd have to work very hard to prove her wrong. As far as he could tell, he was already off to a good start.

"Where was home?" He wasn't sure if 'was' was a little pessimistic on his part, but who knew if they were ever getting back. People had died here, apparently, which he thought was all kinds of fucked up.

"Well. It. I was ... I was ... supposed to be moving to Forks, Washington, to live with my dad, but I was in Phoenix, Arizona before I was ... kidnapped." She shrugged and glanced over to him. "What about you?"

Bella slid her hands into her hip pockets as they walked along. Nothing had jumped out to bite them, so it was a little easier to relax slightly. She looked around as they drew closer to the shoreline, and she peered past it to see if she could see anything besides water stretching out on the horizon.

She didn't exactly expect to be able to see another island or anything like that, but if she could have, she might've encouraged some people who wanted to try swimming to see if they could reach it.

But she guessed that their kidnappers wouldn't have let them past the line if there was anything for them to reach from where they stood.

"New York. I was in the middle of a move too," he replied with a light smirk, gazing towards the water. "Hey, you think if they send people back, they'll put us where we left off or... will we have missed a bunch of time?"

They must have had some weird time machine type thing or else how did they pull all these people from different times? Maybe that was why he'd seen Jaime just days before he was taken. It sort of got confusing even in his head, though, so he decided not to elaborate on his thoughts.

He bent down to pick up a rock, intending to throw it into the ocean when they got closer. In the meantime, he tossed it lightly into the air, catching it, and then tossing it again.

"I'm not going for a swim, just so you know."

"I don't know. We must, I guess. People from different times that knew each other before ... they say that they saw the people here ... you know, while they were ... like." Bella waved one hand and wondered if she could explain.

"Like people who were taken from a later point remembered seeing the people who've been here, just yesterday in their own time. So I don't know if ... they really do just return us to the place in time they took us from.

"I guess we'll find out ... if we get home." If. If, not when, because people died here, and ... she couldn't honestly see their kidnappers returning them home. No matter what they said.

"Yeah, that's how it was for me and Jaime. I saw her a couple days before I got here but she said she's been here for months," he confirmed, shaking his head lightly. He didn't miss the if and he agreed, even though he hadn't been here long enough to 'know' the scientists.

Suddenly, he cried out, "Oh god, they're all over me!" As he spoke, he frantically began to hop around, brushing his hands over his clothes as if he was being covered by bugs or bitten by things unseen.

Just as suddenly, he stopped, his hands in mid-swipe against his shirt. A slow grin broke out across his lips as he regarded her and he shrugged, "Just kidding."

Bella shrieked when John started hopping and brushing at himself. She clapped her hands over her mouth, staring, but she couldn't see anything and then ... he stopped.

She dropped her hands and kind of glared at him before she shoved his shoulder. "Jerk," she muttered. Her heart was pounding, and she could feel adrenaline or something making her kind of tingle, and she kind of wanted to kick him for that stunt. "That was ... that ... you're a jerk," she decided as she crossed her arms over her chest.

Maybe he wouldn't have such an easy time making friends.

He grinned, and okay, maybe he felt a little bad, but things had been mostly serious the whole time. He thought they could use a little excitement or something.

"Oh, come on. Not even a little funny?" He asked, raising his brows and doing his best to look innocent. It was never a look that he was very good at, to be honest. He had dropped his rock in the process of that stunt but decided it wasn't worth picking it up again.

He rubbed his shoulder where she had shoved him, even though it hadn't hurt at all.

"No. Not even a little. I mean, people have almost died out here, and ... and how do we know they didn't set something closer to the shore, just to ... to mess with us?" Bella looked away as she tried to calm herself down from the scare. For all she'd known ... John really had had something happen to him. She didn't trust these people as far as she could throw them, and really, she probably couldn't even push them very far.

She looked at the water, wondering if there were things in it. Nets or traps or currents or sharks or something? If someone tried to swim it, would something bad happen? She wouldn't, but ... someone might. Like Chase.

Not that she'd care if he got himself killed. He wasn't exactly a friendly sort.

"Well, I was just trying to be funny," John shrugged awkwardly. He supposed it was a little different, being an ass to Jaime or Bobby; they already knew his 'sense of humor.' Shoving his hands into his pockets, he glanced at her before shifting his gaze to the water.

He wasn't going to apologize though.

"I'll try harder next time," he added, his lips twitching slightly. But whatever. If she was going to be uptight about a little joke, well, they'd walked far enough. They'd probably go back and part ways soon anyway.

"Sure," she agreed, nodding her head slightly. She glanced over to him, then glanced to the water, and she decided she'd had about enough of the other side of the line. "Think I'm going to head in," she said with a slight gesture toward the hotel, which suddenly seemed impossibly far away.

Bella had a moment of wondering if they would spring traps on the way back, if they'd start trapping people on the other side of where the line had been, and while she doubted it, she had learned not to assume anything at all about these people.

Maybe they would. There really didn't seem to be any lines these people wouldn't cross anymore.

"Coming?" she prompted. "Or are you staying out here?"

"Yeah, I'm coming," he agreed, still feeling a little off about his joke, but pushing those feelings away. While he didn't really expect anything to happen out here at this point, he wasn't inclined to hang around and he imagined she didn't want to walk back on her own.

With a final glance at the water, he turned to fall into step beside her to head back to the hotel.
