RP: Shifting Tides
Who Magius and Ariana Dumbledore
What Studying Magic
When Early evening, 9-2
Where In the lobby
Warning PG
Summary Magius is studying when he encounters Ari. through conversation, Magius volunteers to attempt to teach Ari magic, and she agrees.

Magius had decided, on rising today, that working alone would be... counterproductive. To get out of this place, to fight the enemy who was always watching, he'd need allies and aid, and so, for once in his life, heralded only by his alliance with Huma, he'd look for allies.

He'd worked on the garden, and worked out, and wandered some, then gathered his books and headed down to the lobby, to a table there, and settled. He'd study, and talk to those who came through, and maybe he'd learn something.

He hoped so anyway.

With interest, he opened his notes on the recent magical experiments, and began to study, referencing his spellbooks as he worked. He was a figure in quiet, and yet he smiled as he worked, truly enjoying the learning he was doing

Ari felt thwarted. She didn't really want to watch the things on the telly. It looked disturbing and violent and she could tell a lot of people didn't like it. But Lizzy had been insistent about finding some way, or some unguarded room, or something, and they couldn't manage. Not for long, anyway. Either they couldn't get in to begin with, or they were promptly discovered and shoo'd out.

Right now though .... Ches had attracted Lizzy's attention somewhere, leaving Ariana to her own devices. She knew Lily had wanted her to meet someone, but she'd been dodging that. Not because she didn't want someone to look after her, but just because she was kind of nervous about it - and because she wasn't sure what Lizzy would have to say.

If someone was looking after Ari, then Lizzy likely wouldn't be able to get away with as much, if she took Ari along with her. She didn't think Lizzy was in the market for a guardian, which meant Ari wasn't sure she wanted one, either.

So insted, Ariana thought she'd go scope out the lobby area, to see if the telly down there was free, or if someone was watching it. If someone was watching it, if she was careful, she could probably go find Lizzy and they could watch quietly. If they were lucky, no one would notice they were there.

Instead, what she found in the lobby was a man with some books. For just a moment, she was very profoundly reminded of home. Of Albus, with his books. She sniffled a little at the reminder that her brothers weren't here, but she edged closer to the man with the books, curious all the same. With her hands clasped neatly behind her back, Ariana crept closer on silent feet to see what this man with the books was doing.

She believed herself in her quietness to be utterly invisible, and thus she edged right up to the edge of the couch, peering intently toward the books and papers, her quest to find a working telly momentarily abandoned.

Magius could feel eyes on him, and heard, with ears trained for combat and stealth, the tread of a very light foot. In any other place he would suspect goblins or kobolds, but here, he was sure he'd seen children. Children were... odd. Magius wasn't sure he really knew how to deal with them. What did this one want?

He thought her quietness was laudable, though, and warmed to her as she creeped closer.

Perhaps some encouragement?

"That would work better were an advanced invisibility or an increased inaudibility spell cast over you. As it were, I hope you are enjoying yourself?"

He looked up with kind eyes, ones that gleamed silver in the light. "Be welcome, young one." With a gesture and a word, he sent a chair edging backward slightly. "Will you join me?"

Ari gasped and jumped as he noticed her. Sometimes, when she crept up on Albus, she really did think she was invisible for all the attention he paid her.

She flushed and ducked her head shyly, unsure how to answer her question. Was she enjoying herself? "I was going to watch the telly," she admitted in a voice that was just above a whisper. "No one wants us to," she continued. "Lizzy and myself, I mean," she added to clarify as she stretched up a little to peer at the books before the moving chair caught her attention.

Albus could do that, too, and she stared at the chair as if she could will him or - better yet - Abe into the chair. She couldn't, of course, but she was convinced that someday, Abe would come and save her.

Climbing up into the chair, she rested her small hands on the table to give herself some leverage to see. "My brother had a lot of books like these," she shared.

He nodded, thinking. They no doubt were trying to limit the children's exposure to adult concepts, something he was leary about. Misinformation and denial only led to further curiosity.

"Mostly because they fear what is in them will harm you, inside. Much of what is on is the needless cruelty of one human to another and other things are private matters, which have been stolen, and rebroadcast as a form of theft. I am sure those looking after you do not mean to deny you anything good or true."

His voice was reasonable, and calm, even as he watched her.

"I, myself, do not wish to impede you, though I ask that you be careful of what you watch, and ask an adult what something means, before assuming anything."

His duty done, he smiled at her.

"Was he a wizard as well. For that is what I am, a wizard of the white robes." He looked down at his normal clothing. "Even if I do not have many white robes to wear, here."

"I know," she said. "We heard some people talking about it." She thought again how she didn't really want to see it, but everyone really was making her curious when they fussed like that. Like they had with the condoms. They'd gotten bored with those soon enough though.

"Lily said it'll probably be over tomorrow," Ariana continued as she poked at the pages of one of the books. "That's how things are here, I guess," she added.

Shifting around in the chair, she bent her knees under herself so she was kneeling in the chair, bracing her weight on her arms as she leaned on the table. "My brothers were both wizards," she agreed. "I was meant to be a witch but something bad happened to me when I was little."

She truthfully didn't remember much by way of details, but she remembered being afraid, so very afraid, and hurt ... and she was never quite right after that. "So they got to go to school and I didn't because I can't trust my magic and they thought people would lock me up in St Mungo's, so they kept me at home like a secret."

He nodded. "No doubt they were somewhat fussed by it."

He pondered as he listened to her.

"Ah... why can't you trust your magic? What happens if you use it?" Curiosity ignited in him like a spark and he turned his gaze directly on her. Magic study was, after all, his primary thought and idea.

"Secrets can be important, but sometimes, in new times and places, their necessity is no longer true. Remember that, if nothing else. Some truth can change, with where you are."

"I can't use it," Ariana said simply. "I can't make it come out when I want it to. It just comes out on its own, when it feels like it. Sometimes I can try to keep it in, but mostly I can't.

"I froze the mattress upstairs," she admitted. "When we were under attack. It just happened." She gazed down, splaying her fingers on the tabletop. "It could've been worse," she mumbled. She could've killed Lizzy, after all. Or set the room on fire.

She didn't like to think about that though, or to admit she'd killed her mother and burdened her brothers with taking care of her. She hadn't meant to, but she'd been upset, and it had just ... happened.

"Was anyone able to help you at all?" He nodded, listening. "It's not your fault,--" he realized he did not know her name. "I am Magius. and I apologize for not introducing myself earlier. What is your name?"

He nodded and thought. "There may be a way to change... the conditions of magic around you, to make it easier for you to learn, or, indeed, to stop it from happening."

He thought of that, and nodded. A magical item. It had been years since he had made one, and first he would have to reinvent permanence, but... it could work... maybe.

"Would you want to learn to control it? Or have it shut off, or not talk about it? I would not want to proceed with anything without your per mission."

He did not want to push himself or his ideas on her, after all. Another thought occurred to him. "May i ask your age?"

Ari shook her head. "They didn't know what to do about it, and they were afraid to take me to the hospital. Thought I'd be locked up or maybe even sent to prison for being a danger to the community."

Her lips twitched a little into a smile. "Ariana Dumbledore. It's very nice to meet you, Mr Magius."

She fidgeted a little. "I would like to learn," she admitted. "Lily has an extra wand she said I could use, but she hasn't had time to really devote to teaching me. She said maybe after everyone else figured out how to work all their magic together, she'd have time."

Ari glanced up to him, a half-smile on her lips. "Fourteen," she said quietly. She knew she looked younger than her years due to her small frame and the air of innocence and wide-eyed wonder she had about her, so she wasn't surprised he couldn't just guess.

He smiled back and gave a half bow to her. "Just Magius, please. And it is a pleasure to meet thee, Ariana Dumbledore."

He smiled a little more. "Would you care to try to learn with me? Our magics are different, but in the magical demonstrations recently, we learned that magics can interact with no harmful effects."

He chuckled, surprised.

"In my world, you would be of age, and either studying wizardry in the towers, or bound off of it, and in whatever other occupation you wished." He nodded.

Ari wondered if he could teach her. He didn't know their spells and the wand motions and the words, and her eyes narrowed slightly in thought. "Could you?" Maybe he could; what did she know? "We don't have any books here or anything like that," she protested. "And Lily said her extra wand might not work for me," she added.

"I'd be in school in my world, if I wasn't ... like this," she admitted sullenly. She wished she wasn't like this, but wishing was never enough. Her mind and her magic didn't want to work together. It was better here though. The buzzing wasn't as loud. The magic wasn't as insistent. The only time it had been was during the attack.

Still, she was interested in the offer. He clearly had more time than Lily did, even if he didn't know their magic.

He smiled ruefully. "I don't know. I would have to try to sense your magic, and much of what i taught you would be unlike what others of your world would know. for I would teach my own ways." He smiled softly, thinking.

"If you needed an object to focus on, we could start with that, finding and creating a wand for you, making it one chosen by you, that works with and for you." He nodded firmly. That sounded like a good starting point.

"I cannot replace your school, and I might fail in the teaching, but if we are careful, none others than we will be in danger, and only as much as we allow ourselves to be in. I am willing to try, if you are."

He held her eyes, willing her to see his true wish to help her. And that it was her choice.

"Oh, we can't make wands," she assured him firmly. "Only wandmakers can, and you need magical cores, and there aren't any here. Lily doesn't even think there's any wood to use that would make a proper wand," she continued earnestly.

Her brow furrowed. "I don't think I could learn your ways, could I? If you don't have the same sorts of magic," she attempted to reason out. She had magic, but it was the sort that had to come through a wand, mostly. Albus could do a lot of things without his wand, even at his young age, but it was still the same kind of magic. If Magius had different magic, she didn't think she could use it the same.

But maybe she could. He was older and therefore smarter, so perhaps he knew exactly how to try it.

"I don't want to be in danger," she said with a nod. "So if we start to go into danger, you have to stop us," she continued.

"Hmmm. I may no be able to make the kinf of wand you know, but a wand I can make... in time."

He paused, thinking of Luke, then nodded. "I know where to get a core that is a kind of magical thing, yes... a friend has them."

Her words made him smile, then sigh. "I do not know, but I do not believe it is an inability to learn, merely a lack of knowledge and training. Magic is, at core, all the same, and it merely takes someone to teach it. I will endeavor it, if you will try."

He smiled a little, and nodded. "And I will ask Lily or Severus for lessons on your world's kind of magic to enhance my own knowledge."

He listened, and nodded, seriously facing her.

"Very well. If we slip toward danger, each lesson ends. I will count on you, as well, to let me know what you are feeling, for feelings, emotions and thoughts are all important to magic. To teach you, I must understand that you trust me, and will tell me how it is working for you."

He smiled a little kinder. "And I will endeavor to earn that trust, always." He offered her his hand, seriously, as he would to an adult.

She was curious to see this wand he thought he could make, and she was a little skeptical, but this entire place was strange to her. So perhaps the rules about wand making didn't hold here. Perhaps he could create a wand she could cast spells through.

There was nothing he was saying she could really disagree with. He was going to learn about her magic and try to teach her, and all she had to do was trust him. He seemed nice enough and she certainly had nothing against him ... so maybe this would work out.

Offering him a little smile, Ariana nodded her agreement. "We can try," she said softly.

He smiled at her. "We can learn together, or we can learn that it wont work."

He grinned wider, then dug out a book he kept, on beginner's magic. "Would you like to read about my world's magic some, since it will take me at least a day or so to put some lessons together?"

She hesitated a little. Exposure to the network was improving her reading skills, but she wasn't sure she could manage a whole book. "I don't read very fast," she warned him as she extended her hands to accept the book.

Her education, when they decided she wouldn't be attending Hogwarts, hadn't exactly been a priority. So she learned what Abe taught her when he wasn't busy, and tried to teach herself the rest of it.

Still, it would give her something to do instead of trying to watch things she shouldn't on the telly.

"We are in no hurry. Take as much time as you need, and if you need any help, let me know. I studied this same book long ago as a student, and I was no fast learner either. Just be willing to give yourself time." He felt confident that she was smart enough and had no reason to disbelieve her power, now all they had to do was find a way to strengthen her mind and will against the trauma she had endured.

He would not let her down if he could help it. "I'm in room 404, if you need anything at all." He would set his wards so she could enter if she needed, even if he were not there.

She smiled a little. "I'm in 401," she said. "So not so very far from you." She slid off of the chair, holding the book against her chest tightly. "Thank you," she said slightly shyly before she pushed her chair back in.

It seemed like things were wrapping up and she wanted to start reading and try to find Lizzy at the same time.

"I'll see you later," she said. "I read the network too, so you can contact me there as well."

"You're welcome. May the days be made brighter for you, and may all your Gods go with you." He gave her a half bow, seated as he was.

He stood as he watched her go, stretching and then heading to the kitchen area to get a snack before continuing.

He smiled as he did so, pleased. "Maybe this is what I am here for?"
