RP: The Fun Has Arrived...!
Characters: Balthazar, Lily
Time/Date: Afternoon, August 18
Location: First floor. He's wandering.
Warnings/Rating: Probably none?
Summary: Balthazar arrives, and explores
Status: Complete

It wasn't the first time that he'd woken up without any idea what had transpired the night before. But this was an entirely different sensation of 'I have no idea what happened last night' that he really wasn't familiar with. His last memories involved the Great Magic finally assisting him, after over a millennium of searching, in locating the Prime Merlinian and then there was Horvath, and that just never ended well, ever. And then the urn, and... so by his calculations, it was 2010.

But it just... didn't feel right.

First of all, he didn't see the urn anywhere. Nor did he see Horvath. Nor did he remember much of his time spent in the urn, though he imagined that that was to be expected, all things considered (though he would admit, if asked directly, that was his first experience with THAT sort of entrapment, and wasn't really sure what to base it on).

He tested what he had of his magic. In places, he wondered if he was just a bit rusty for being cooped up for so long, and in other areas it was clear that he'd had some sort of limitations placed on him. He was positively itching to get out and see exactly what limitations he had placed on him, but he imagined in a pinch he could guess what they were. After 1300 years, there wasn't a whole lot left that surprised you. Seemed to him that this was your typical kidnap and observe, if the shimmering air around this room was any indication of hidden cameras. Perhaps he was losing his touch, and it was just the heaters.

A brief survey of the room located a computer - (which, holy cow, but did he ever love technology and the way it took less than a century to come out with genuine improvements - 320GB of data storage? Seemed only yesterday that he was disk cleaning daily to maintain his 2GB!) - and a small... shiny... phone? Cell phone, he thought they were called, but he'd never really understood the point of carrying around large, bulky phones when he didn't really have anyone that he ever needed to call. The way it was flashing and beeping at him caught his attention, though, and he flipped through some of the recent messages, raising an eyebrow.

So all right then. He was right about the kidnap and observe, and apparently had been just fortunate enough to arrive in the middle of the latest attack. Lovely. But from what he could tell, the areas seemed to be secured with... magic? But to have that particular bit of information broadcast so public - no matter how cut off this area was to the rest of the world - was downright strange to him, to the point where he actually wondered if it was a different kind of magic. It wasn't like that was impossible, not really - he'd seen and done too much in his lifetime to think that anything was impossible - but he'd yet to encounter anything that he didn't find had some basis in his sorcery.

Speaking of. He'd wanted to head out and explore his limits, and he really didn't think this room (or this building, frankly) could handle it, so he set off to explore these 'warded windows' he'd heard about, see what sort of magic he was dealing with. If he encountered any of the residents - (and, truth be told, he was sort of hoping to encounter this Lily girl who seemed to be the one who had put up the wards on the windows, thus likely a sorcerer of some sort who could explain more about the limitations on the magic without him actually having to go all out and test it, but he suspected the likelihood of that was small) - all the better. He'd get a couple of questions in while he poked and prodded at someone else's spell.

He took a brief moment to wonder if Horvath or Dave had been pulled here as well before he decided he'd find out eventually, and headed to explore the first floor.

Lily disliked being on downstairs duty, but she had to set an example, or something. She also wanted to watch for the patrols, though those made her nervous. She'd wanted to discourage them, but Tyler had pointed out that they weren't a bad idea. Some people wouldn't want to stay cooped up and hide from a threat, and it wasn't as though anyone was being forced to do it.

Besides, they had no promise at all that these things would be sent away at the end of the week. Just because everything else lasted only a week then went away didn't mean this would. This, actually, had the feel of something that was going to last longer than a week.

Motion caught her eye and drew her out of her thoughts. Lily turned, though when she didn't recognize the person (and she thought she had a decent idea of what everyone here looked like), she pulled her wand. "Stop, where you are," she called out in a voice braver than she felt.

Jaime had shown them pictures of what reavers supposedly were, but what if the puzzle had been a lie, a red herring? What if reavers really looked like everyone else? Granted, all right, people who knew reavers agreed that the picture was accurate, but ... in this place, Lily wasn't sure she could take anything at face value anymore. Maybe, somehow, they'd made a reaver look like a normal person, and had let it in the building. Lily felt her heart hammering, but she didn't lower her wand, or her eyes.

He'd been peering at the doors in the lobby, trying to test out the spells from this side of the door without breaking the hard work and effort that had clearly gone into casting it. It was a... strange sensation, feeling out magic that was different from your own, and he'd gotten absorbed in it and had not heard the approaching footsteps.

At the sound of the urgent voice, he followed the instructions. He was a stranger here, in the little system that they had created, and had no problem with complying with whatever rules he needed to in order to earn the trust of the collective people. His hands slid into the air to indicate he didn't have a weapon, and he turned sort of slowly, anticipating that would be the next instruction but ready to freeze again if asked. Mostly, he just wanted to see the face of the woman that was shouting at him.

He caught a quick peek of red hair, and a small smirk crossed his face wondering if he was going to get lucky and meet the girl who'd created the magical wards, but he didn't want to get his hopes up.

"Don't shoot," he said mildly, unable to keep the small tich of amusement out of his voice, as he turned. "I mean you no harm."

Lily was a little aware she was probably being completely ridiculous, but that didn't slow down her heart or make her relax any more. She was completely on edge, not sleeping well, and undoubtedly bound to slip up sooner or later. She'd rather be too cautious than not cautious enough.

"Who are you?" she called as she glanced around to ascertain there was no one else down here as she moved slowly toward him, giving him a wide berth as she circled around in front of him. Frightened emerald eyes were wide as she gazed up at him. He looked ... normal to her. Well, as normal as anyone else here looked.

She did lower her wand, but only slightly. Her eyes remained intently focused on his face, searching for any sign he wasn't what he appeared to be. "You ... you can put your hands down," she added softly. "Though if I see you reaching into a pocket ..." she let the unspoken threat remain unspoken, because really, she wasn't going to kill him. Just ... stun him.

He glanced at her face, lowering his arms when instructed and offering her a smile that he reserved for instances when good fortune smiled on him. He inclined his head slightly to her in greeting, before answering her question. "My name is Balthazar Blake. I have just arrived at this... place, and was... exploring. I promise, I have nothing dangerous in my pockets." Which was true enough. His ring was on his finger.

He was choosing his words carefully, though realized belatedly that that simply would make him more suspect. After a quick decision, he decided he'd go with honesty - though he wouldn't have, if he hadn't seen the network entries. "To be honest, I was scrolling through the entries on this device," he held up the blackberry so she'd know what he was talking about, "and I noticed a comment that the windows and doors had been 'warded' which seemed... distinctly mythical, to me. I came down to see..." he paused, and then shrugged as he went all out, "well, to see what sort of magic - if any - was being used to achieve it."

Lily relaxed then, lowering her wand. If he had one of those, then he was one of them. "My apologies for the greeting then," she murmured. "We ... are in a bit of an unpredictable situation. Thus the ..." She gestured. "The boards, the wards, the nearly palpable tension overlying the entire place." Not to mention the weaponry, the jerry-rigged medical center, and everything else going on.

"My name is Lily Evans," she continued. She didn't bother giving any sort of 'and I'm in charge' addition; if he'd read the network, he'd have an idea of that. "The ... magic is mine. Mine, and a friend of mine's, really," she amended.

While she wasn't completely relaxed, she was slightly less guarded now, and offered him a more genuine smile. "Things are a little ... well, tense here, lately. We don't have any idea when it's going to be over, either." Her expression was slightly apologetic at that, though it was hardly her fault things were like this.

Then, she eased into a more business-like stance. If he was new here ... then they were still bringing people in. Even during all of this. Just how sadistic were these captors? The ones already here at least had an idea of what they were up against, but anyone new ...

"Don't go outside," she suggested abruptly. "There are ... for lack of a better word, monsters out there." Though she thought 'monster' was a perfectly apt term for the creatures.

He noticed when her expression shifted, and he eyed the device thoughtfully, recognizing that - for her at least - it seemed to include him in the ragtag bunch that he assumed was filling this hotel. He wondered about that for a moment, about what she had been expecting him to be. Obviously some sort of enemy, planeted by those in charge, but how difficult would it have been to fake that? Though he was hardly about to point that out if he had managed to get her to trust him even a little.

"A pleasure to meet you, Miss Evans," he said inclining his head again before glancing back to the door he'd been examining. "The magic is... fascinating," he said. "I have not encountered anything like it in my travels. Under whom did you study?" It was his assumption she'd been an apprentice somewhere, and he thought that perhaps he would have known her master. Unless it was true, and she was from a different reality to him, but perhaps it would be vaguely parallel. Besides, he'd still be curious to know where she'd studied.

He nodded his head somewhat solemnly to her statement about there being monsters outside. He'd noticed that mentioned within the network, and hadn't had any plans to explore outside until such time as he was told it was safe to. "It seems I have impeccable timing on that front. If there is anything I can do to help..."

He was used to fellow sorcerers recognizing his name as one of Merlin's apprentices - the old stories did take some time to die, and thousands of years later were still being told, after all - and thus did not think of explaining his own powers.

The question was odd. Or the phrasing of it was, and Lily realized they must have different sorts of magic. "I ... attended a school in Scotland called Hogwarts. We had several professors, and ... did a bit of learning on our own, of course. But Professor Dumbledore, Professor Flitwick, and Professor Slughorn were my primary mentors. I can't imagine the names mean anything to you though," she added, the corners of her eyes crinkling as she smiled.

Lily nodded in regard to his offer of help. "For the most part, we're ... simply letting people do what they feel most comfortable doing. There're a few rooms upstairs that are designated safe rooms, with focused wards around them. Those of us with ... powers that are willing to defend it are taking turns just keeping an eye on it. There are patrols, and people are spying from the upstairs rooms. Just ... whatever's of use. If you had any medical training, we have a few areas set aside for the eventual wounds."

Lily wasn't stupid, nor was she delusional. There would be injuries, if not casualties. "I am sorry you had to arrive in the middle of this." Or at all, really. She hated seeing new people dragged here. Not for herself, of course; she liked meeting them ... but she hated the idea of more people being ripped from their lives.

"Where ... are you from?" she inquired curiously. "If you don't mind sharing."

"Do you anticipate a breach of the defenses?" he asked carefully, wondering if they were just setting up safe rooms upstairs to cover their bases, or anticipated a great deal of strength from the attacking creatures. Knowing nothing - or very little - about it, he couldn't be sure, but the wards seemed fairly secure from what he'd been able to piece together. He imagined it was just a precaution, but if he could get an idea of what they thought these creatures capable of, he thought that it would help his decision about how he wanted to help out.

She was correct about thinking he would not recognize the names of her professors, but he was distinctly fascinated by the idea of there being an entire school devoted to the study of magic. He wondered if he might have heard the names if he'd stayed in England a bit longer, but doubted it - it was becoming very evident to him that they were from different realities, though it was a first for him to encounter someone so similar to him in terms of species in an alternate reality.

He nodded to her statements about things he could do to assist, giving some thought to it and deciding he'd ease himself into it slowly. Maybe there'd be places where he could help, but maybe it was for the best if he sat this one out and just got to know the area instead.

"Manhattan, most recently," he said. "Though I've done a great deal of traveling. There are few places I have not been to." Though the fact that she asked reminded him that she wouldn't know about him. "I... originally studied under Merlin," he told her straightforwardly. "There has been a... need to refine my skills over the past few centuries, hence the traveling."

"We don't know what to anticipate, to be perfectly honest with you," Lily admitted. "We're dealing with a mostly unknown element in an environment governed by sadists who seem to enjoy inflicting as much distress on us as they possibly can." Lily lifted her shoulders in a slight shrug. "So, yes, we anticipate a breach. I'd like to think that Remus and I can hold the wards just fine - once they're up, they don't take much to maintain - but we don't know what the reavers will be armed with."

An uncertain smile etched at her lips before she shook her head slightly. "Studied under Merlin," she repeated. Her lips parted again before her brow furrowed. "Well," she finally said. "You look remarkably well preserved for being that old."

She thought of all the wizards and witches who'd love to have a chance to talk to someone who'd met Merlin, then in that same instant reasoned they couldn't be the same Merlin. Not if they were using different magic. Lily, however, was not unfamiliar with the idea of parallel universes - thanks to conversations she'd been privy to here - and she supposed it was possible that in one universe, magic had developed differently.

"Would you like something to eat, or drink?" she said. In part to change the subject and in part to simply give herself something else to do. "We're mostly subsisting off of packaged foods, but I could make some sandwiches and tea, if you'd like?"

He nodded his head, and while the concepts were foreign to him, he got the gist. It was a wise decision to expect the worst in any situation. He knew that from experience.

"In all technicalities," he said with a small smile. "I am not. While my mind retains the knowledge of centuries past, my body remains in the same state it was in when the spell was cast. Age wise, at least, as far as I can determine. The actual casting is a bit beyond me."

But then, Merlin was in a class above the rest of them. Even centuries of learning could not equal him to the standards Merlin held himself to. But he supposed that was neither here nor there.

"That sounds wonderful," he said when she mentioned food, gesturing that she should lead the way to the kitchen. "I'll admit; packaged food and sandwiches are things a bachelor gets quite familiar with over the years."

She nodded slightly. She was no stranger to spells cast above her level. She'd seen Albus Dumbledore at work, after all, so perhaps it was a similar sort of feeling.

Relieved to have something to do with her hands, Lily turned away to head into the kitchen. She wanted to apologize for him winding up here, but that was hardly her fault. Still, right now ... why were they dropping people in right now? In the middle of an attack when everyone was frazzled and far from being on their best behavior? When they were tired and tempers were flaring? It was only going to get worse as the week wore on, she knew.

"Have you ever had anything like this happen to you before?" she inquired as she started rifling through the fridge and the cabinets to see what she could come up with. She pulled down the loaf of bread and found some meats and cheeses in the fridge, which she carefully stacked onto the bread. Honestly, if something had happened to him before, something like this, she'd want to know about it. Even if it had been a magical abduction while this was clearly a technological one.

"We haven't got much to drink besides juice, and tea, and soda. No one thought to get milk or anything like that." Though she was fairly certain there was a stash of coffee that never seemed to run out.

He hesitated briefly at her question. "Yes and no," he said finally. "My... person, has been taken from the reality I exist in, and subject to these experiments, but my mind has little to no memory of the occurrences beyond a few glimpses and night terrors," which was a half true statement. There had been a lot of soul searching a few years back when he'd caught the first glimpses of being taken from his reality, and he wasn't even sure about how many times it had occurred. "But to actually experience what occurs in these alternate realities is new to me. I imagine the next time it happens, I will say much of the same."

He wondered if she would take some comfort in that, in the - however vague - assurances that she would return and would have no memory of her time here, or if she would find it as frightening as he often did. He wished to assure her that it was all right, that they would actually return her, but with so many variations on so many timelines, it was entirely possible that her original one would change it's story to "and then there was the strange day where Lily Evans disappeared and never returned..."

Though he supposed that was a bad train of thought to go down.

"That's quite all right," he said to her statements about what was available. "I completely understand. Difficult times call for some sacrifice as to what is at hand. I can make due," he made a gesture to the fridge. "May I help myself? Where are the cups?"

Lily nodded slightly. "Jaime ... tried to tell me a little about alternate realities." Realizing he wouldn't know who Jaime was, and that the name was just a name, she made a slight gesture. "She's ... I'm sure you'll meet her. She's part of the trio of us that ... that make decisions here." Lily paused. "Not that we ... we're not a dictatorship or anything like that. Everyone's still free to make their own decisions, but for the ones who ... who want someone to look to, she and I and Tyler have ... become that." Somehow. Lily was still bent on the idea it was simply longevity and the fact they'd taken initiative once.

She nodded a little at the idea she wouldn't remember, and she wasn't sure if she liked that idea or not. She wanted to remember ... she wanted to fix things, change things, create the alternate reality. She wanted to not die when she went home. If she went home. She might not even survive this attack.

Lily made a slight gesture to the cabinet where they'd taken to storing the cups, and then to the fridge - though that one, at least, was obvious. She cut the sandwich diagonally and set the halves on a plate before setting it on the table for him.

He tilted his head curiously as he poured himself some orange juice. In all honesty, he thought he might have liked something stronger, but if they were in the middle of a battle, he didn't really want to start in on the alcohol until it was over. There was no sense in being off his game so early into it. Or doing or saying something foolish in the presence of a beautiful woman. So he'd settle for juice right now.

"Because of your skills?" he asked, or more assumed, when she mentioned that she was part of the trio that made the decisions here. But perhaps there was another reason that he was not privy too - he hadn't read that far back in the network to see what all the intricacies of the place were, after all.

Lily did manage a soft laugh at his question. "No. I don't know. Probably not. I think it was more ... longevity. I was here first. I was here alone for four days before anyone showed up, and ... people had questions, so I was generally the first to answer. And it sort of ... continued, until other people were pointing people at me.

"So, Tyler and I had become friends, and then Jaime, and ... I don't know. I suppose we all sort of bonded, and became what we are now. People come to us, or ... we've taken it upon ourselves to try to handle the things that go wrong, and ... it's a rough job, but someone has to do it sort of thing," Lily concluded as she eased into a chair at the table. She braced one elbow on the tabletop before she rested her chin in it, gazing across to him.

"Really, we just ... try to organize things so it isn't utter chaos. That doesn't mean people don't ignore us, or create their own chaos, but ... we try."

He nodded. It made sense to him. "You must enjoy it, or you would let someone else take over," he remarked, pausing before he reached towards the sandwiches she had set out. Snagging a triangle, he took a quick bite and gave her an appreciative smile. While she'd been clear about it not being much, the effort put into it was still welcome, and he was thankful for it.

"This sort of thing happens often, then?" he remarked. She was speaking about things as if she and... Tyler and Jaime had to organize things regularly to keep the chaos from being a problem. Were these observes of the type that forced their captives into challenges to test their worth?

Lily frowned slightly at his observation. "It's not ... it's ... hardly a matter of enjoying it, but someone has to step up, don't they? There has to be some form of leadership for the people who ... want to have someone to look to."

She paused, and then shrugged. "Though I suppose you're right. If I didn't want to do it, I wouldn't." Even as she said that, she wondered if she could just step aside. If she could sit idly by and watch as everything went to hell, or someone else stepped up. Would someone else step up? And moreover, would it be the right kind of leader? Was there even a right and wrong here? They stepped aside when someone who knew better than them had a plan, or an idea.

She just didn't want to become one of those corrupt leaders ... but she thought they had a decent balance of ideas and backgrounds to work from.

"Not ... on this sort of scale, no. Nothing I've had to put out nightly updates about before. There have been minor incidences. There were direwolves, once, but nothing happened with that. Still, we did sort of organize a 'keep inside' sort of thing and ... made sure anyone who had to make runs to the store was accompanied by someone who could feasibly fend off a wolf attack."

He nodded, and tried not to smirk. Those who found themselves in positions of leadership, from his point of view, tended to have a great amount of difficulty stepping down. It was just one of those things - once you got used to being in charge, it was hard to let that go, even if you wanted to.

And he suspected that if she actually wanted to, she would have done it by now. From his gaze there were plenty of alpha males who would have eventually stepped up in to the position, if for no other reason than to prove their worth to the group.

People were really such complicated things to study.

He wasn't sure what a direwolf was, but nodded his head all the same. He could guess. And he believed it when she said this was their first big scale attack - the level of fear that everyone seemed to be exerting was indication enough.

"Are there many of those, then?" he asked somewhat suddenly. "Those who can fend off a wolf attack, I mean," he clarified, realizing she wouldn't follow his train of thought.

"Enough," she agreed with a nod. "Between those who can wield magic, those who are exceptionally strong or gifted with physical fighting skills, and the ones that can use guns and arrows or other weapons of that sort ... but there's a fairly equal share here who really have no defenses like that. No means beyond the normal of protecting themselves..." Her mind always went to Jaime when she started thinking about the defenseless sorts. After this was over, she was going to ask one of the people with guns to show Jaime how to use it.

She was sure Jayne or Mal would be willing, but if not, she might recruit one of the others.

"Jaime's our ... defenseless one. I have my magic, and ... Tyler has his," she added after a slight hesitation. She still felt strange outing people, but ... Tyler had adopted her way of thinking about his power. Jaime, however, was still trying to keep hers quiet. She wasn't sure how possible it was going to be, after this. "There are others here, too. Children, even. That's one of the worst things about this place ... that they don't seem to care that they've just brought in a young teenage girl, or ..."

Lily shook her head. "Well, if I get started on that, we'll be here all day hearing what I don't like about this place."

He nodded, and frowned slightly, though from her words it sounded fairly evenly balanced. He supposed that made sense, in terms of an experiement, to have equal numbers of those who were able to care for themselves, and those who needed protection, and he did wonder where he fell on that scale at this point in time, with the limits being place on his own skills.

"Children?" he asked, staring slightly. He licked his lips sort of absently, barely daring to hope that Dave might be among them, and not knowing how to ask Lily that - also wondering how bad of a person it made him, that he would wish this fate on a boy so young. "How horrible. Hopefully children who at least have some means of protecting themselves, however minor."

His lips curved up in a small smile when she mentioned he shouldn't get her started. "It sounds as though you are entitled to rant all day about this little shop of horrors. I hope there is something I can do to help."

"Children," Lily repeated. "Some ... nearly adult children, but some no where near adulthood. There are a couple of animals, too. A cat, though I'm not certain what, exactly, that's about. And a golden retriever who has a collar modified to let him talk. He's ... well, you'll meet him, too. He's in Jaime's room. He's very friendly and I'm certain he will love you even though he does not know you," Lily said, a little smile touching her lips.

She trusted Balthazar would understand, once he met Dug, why that phrasing amused her.

"I'm sure there will be," she agreed. "You should certainly settle in first, meet some of the others. I ... wouldn't judge them by how they're acting today though. We're all a little strung out, and I don't think anyone's on their best behavior."

"I imagine that is one of those jokes for people in the know?" he said when he saw her lips curl into a smile. "I suppose I'll find out soon enough. Though I'll admit, the prospect of meeting a speaking dog is a tad outside of the realm of realism for me."

Though he supposed that was an odd statement for him to make, given that he'd just woken up in a strange hotel having discovered he was kidnapped from an urn.

"If this isn't your best behaviour, Miss Evans, then I cannot wait to meet you on a good day," he told her with a warm smile. "You have been most hospitable, and quite welcoming given the circumstances. I thank you for that."

"It is," she assured him. "I'm certain you'll be in the know as well soon enough." Emerald eyes played across his face when he mentioned meeting a speaking dog being outside his realm of realism, and she chuckled softly.

"And to some ... what we do is outside their realm of realism and they'd find a talking dog much more believable," she teased lightly.

She flushed slightly at what she assumed was a compliment. "If you overlook our initial minute and a half, yes," she agreed. "I promise, I don't usually greet new arrivals with my wand out." But that did bring to mind what she was supposed to be doing, and Lily found she was strangely reluctant to part company with him. Perhaps because she wasn't inclined to go tend to what she had to do down stairs.

Of course that was it. "So, that said, I should probably get back to ... watching, to make sure we aren't surprised by something. If you need anything else though ... you're more than welcome to get in touch with me, either on the network or stopping by my room."

She shifted to gestured toward the more open area of the lobby. "There's a directory there of people and what room their in, if you wanted to look for familiar names."

He smiled to her statement. "Fair enough," he agreed to her statement about magic being outside of the realm of some people's realism - but he couldn't believe that a dog was closer for those people.

He grinned to her comment about overlooking the first minute and a half of their greeting. "You were just being careful. I can only respect that," he told her honestly, before nodding when she said she had to get back to that. "Well, I thank you again, and I am certain that I will be seeing you again, hopefully under better circumstances, when this place has returned to a more... shall we say... normal level of oddness."

He nodded his head again to her, this time in farewell, and waited to acknowledge her parting words before he headed off to poke around with the wards again.

Normal level of oddness. That was one way to put it, and Lily smiled softly before she eased away from the table. She appreciated that he understood her caution, and she could only hope that anyone else who showed up who received the same treatment handled it as well.

With a nod and farewell to him, Lily turned to head back out into the lobby to keep an eye on the doorway for the patrols. Just in case. Just in case something bad happened and she had to help people into the medical area.

She had a feeling it was going to be a long, horrible week.
