RP: ... huh
Characters: Tyler, open
Time/Date: early evening, June 13, 2032
Location: 1st floor of the hotel
Warnings/Rating: None
Summary: Tyler tries to figure out what's going on
Status: Open, ongoing

He was waiting for the punchline.

So, all right. The guys probably wouldn't do anything like this on purpose, and it was too elaborate for Reid to have thought up - with the note and the line and everything else. Caleb and Pogue wouldn't have supported him anyway. It was a waste of magic, and they were all Ascended. Tyler couldn't even begin to guess at the amount of magic that would have had to go into something like this.

He'd poked around the hotel, poked around outside. After he'd ascertained that the place was more or less stocked and there was no immediate, visible way of escape, he thought he'd call their bluff.

Wandering into the rec room, he plunked himself down in front of the TV and scrolled through the movies on demand before settling on something with lots of car chases and violent explosions.

A smug smile slipped across his lips. He'd wait. Eventually the other Sons would get tired of waiting on him to panic or freak out or whatever else they expected, and they'd undo the very, very elaborate illusion they'd trapped him in.

She was going to tell them that there were. That maybe there had not been before, but now that she had brought them up, surely the scientists would add it to their notes and there would be some in future. He was naive to think otherwise. But he was so blissfully ignorant to the horrors that were going through her mind - even if it was only because he was confused by them - so she decided to let it go.

"There are other things more necessary," she mumbled somewhat shyly, wondering how stumbling into the rec room and blurting crazy-fear-talk at a boy had wound her in a situation where he was going to make her food, and though she wanted it, she really could go much longer without it than this. There had to be more things that were necessary to be done than cook food. Like finding a way to escape without actually leaving the hotel.

But she followed him all the same. Mostly because she'd been alone for a while and she found that she was enjoying the company, so long as he didn't mind it. Much.

Tyler shrugged. "More necessary than what? We have to eat, and it isn't like there are any flashing neon signs saying 'this way out' ..." He made his way around to the dining area, moving past the table and back behind the counter area. He wondered if the scientists were going to have someone here to cook or if they'd have to sort that out for themselves.

Poking around in the fridge and the freezer, he found some food that he was pretty sure he could cook up. "So what's your name? Or should I just call you cannibal clown girl?" he inquired as he pulled some bacon out of the freezer and the carton of eggs from the fridge. He found some bread - ironically enough - in a breadbox, and the pans in the lower cabinets.

"I'm Tyler," he offered, since sharing was caring and all that. He set about turning on the stove and getting things started before he looked over at her.

She thought that he reminded her of Simon, in a way. If Simon were a witch instead of a doctor.

He'd nearly been burned as a witch once. Did that count? Though that had been more her than Simon, so perhaps not.

"More necessary than..." she frowned, her brow furrowing as she worked through that logic. Perhaps here there were no other pressing matters to attend to, and it did make sense to spend time eating. "Simply because the signs do not glow does not mean they are not apparent, should a search party be formed." She watched him work finding things in the kitchen, and tilted her head slightly trying to memorize the patterns. He was using real food, expensive food, and she was astonished how cavalier he seemed about it.

There had been a question. "Not a lake or a sea but a River," she replied. "Ever changing, ever moving, ever flowing, leading a path not always simple." She licked her lips a bit. "It is... good, to meet you," she decided, nodding her head to confirm that thought to herself.

Her fingers twitched a little. She longed to help, but she thought she might just get in the way and it might be better not to ask, though her body language and the way she moved and strained may indicate that she was itching to find a way.

He tried to piece things together and thought he got the jist of what she was saying. Ignore nine words out of every ten, and she made something close kin to sense.

"Well, when they start glowing, we'll see," he said. He wasn't against the idea of a search party, but he didn't think it'd be that easy. But maybe it was. Maybe they were observing to see how long it took everyone to band together and find the way out by sheer force of will or something.

Shrugging to his thoughts, he cracked the eggs on the side of the pan. "Nice to meet you, River." He almost called her not a lake for a joke, but somehow jokes weren't as funny when Reid wasn't here for him to bounce them off of. The rare times he made them.

He stilled for a moment and swallowed hard. It was probably selfish, but he wanted Reid to be here. Or Caleb. Because Caleb could lead them out ... but Reid would make the ride more fun. Tyler's jaw clenched slightly before he shook it off and gestured to the bread. "You can make some toast, if you want," he offered before he nodded toward the nice 6-slice toaster he'd spotted.

She wondered if she was making progress in her speech patterns, or if he was simply catching on to the uniqueness of them. She wondered, too, if practicing to speak like the typical individual that was present here would assist her communication abilities or if it would hinder them. She would require more thinking on that subject.

"Only a matter of time," River murmured quietly. "All things will be attempted so long as there are subjects to play with. And there are always toys in the toybox, no matter how broken they become..."

She trailed off unhappily. There was a lot of pain in this place, and not all of it was hers, but it was fast becoming hers to suffer along with them.

"Toast," she repeated with a nod of affirmation, looking in the direction he pointed. She understood what toast was, but the toaster was foreign to her and required further exploration.

The logistics of it were completely lost on her. She examined the toaster from every angle, observed the heating elements and knew better than to touch while it was connected to the wall that was offering it electricity, though the sudden desire to tear the toaster apart and start figuring out the intricacies of the way it operated was quite overwhelming. She glanced over at Tyler, cooking, and wondered if she would be able to get the toaster apart, figure it out, and put it back together in the time it finished him to finish cooking.

And still cook toast? The possibility was unlikely at best. She would simply have to come back later when the others were asleep.

The bread fit in the top? Maybe? She was uncertain. She turned to ask, frowned and thought better of it and placed the bread in the top of the toaster because it made the most logical sense. She then turned the toaster around and lifted it from the counter, searching for the 'on' button. Perhaps unplugging it and plugging it back in?

"Yeah, well," was all he had to say on the matter of experimentation. He hated the idea of being stuck here. He was a witch, he had power, but the few things he'd tried hadn't been promising and he wasn't keen on killing himself while he was stuck here.

He didn't like the idea of becoming a broken toy, and he liked less the idea of Reid or Pogue or Caleb becoming one. So it was probably best that they were home and presumably safe. Probably looking for him. Wondering where he was. He wondered if Reid was more worried than the others, and Tyler exhaled a soft, frustrated sigh.

Glancing to River, he did a doubletake as she seemed to be having ... trouble with the toaster. He thought it was pretty straight forward, but maybe the models they had were more advanced. Or less advanced.

"Just ... pull the brown lever down," he coached her. "The one on the front, just ... push it down."

She tilted her head at his instruction, and slowly pressed against the brown lever as he had indicated. The toast seemed to move with it, and quite suddenly the springs and latches on the inside of the machine made a great deal more sense. She pressed it down until it clicked into place, and smiled widely as she noted that the heating elements began to light up.

"Fascinating," she observed softly, tilting her head to gaze into the machine. She had noticed the adjusting dial, and turned it to watch the elements heat up further and then decrease in heat depending on the setting. She pointed them out to Tyler, "Which makes 'toast'?" she asked.

She recognized that they would all toast the bread, but perhaps there was a specific name associated with each type of toasted bread. She could not be certain of things in this time. They did not have toasters of this sort in her childhood home, and they rarely had bread to toast on Serenity.

Which made toast? Tyler's brow furrowed, and he shook his head. "The lighter side of the middle setting," he decided. He wasn't a fan of super dark toast. "Do you guys not have toasters where you're from? Or ... when...?"

He finished up what he was doing at the stove and got down a couple of plates he'd tracked down in the cabinets. He wondered if they were watching, even now, and he felt the hairs on the back of his neck prickle at the thought. Well, if they were watching, there wasn't anything he could do about it.

Divvying up the eggs and bacon between the plates, he carted the pan and utensils to the sink to rinse them off before he located the dishwasher. Sticking them in there, he sighed and turned his back to the sink to wait for the toast.

"Both when and where," River murmured. "Distance and time have both retracted, curling in on themselves to make my presence here possible. There was a great deal to curl." She frowned slightly. "And we have nothing of this make and model," River said, staring at the toaster with great fascination as she adjusted the setting. She wasn't certain why this particular instrument had caught her attention so strongly when there were plenty of others in the kitchen that were just as foreign and fascinating, but decided that it was because of her direct interaction with it and how she had been forced to quickly understand it's inner workings that was causing the sudden fascination. "The placement of the heating filament is most ingenious, if somewhat dangerous. Wear and use will cause the latches and springs to grow weary, not longer function to their full use. Burnt hands to correspond to the burnt wheat..." she turned her head slightly to Tyler, watching as he divvied up the food, and licked her lips somewhat absently before she turned back to her staring at the toaster. "How does it indicate-"

She gave a soft shriek, and backed up as very suddenly the toast popped out. Swallowing heavily, she decided that answered her question, and wondered, really, what she had been expecting. She'd seen the mechanism. But she'd thought that she would have to be the one to indicate to the toaster that it could complete it's cycle by pulling the lever back up. Apparently not.

"It's finished?" she asked, somewhat warily.

Maybe he was getting better at understand, or she was getting better at clarifying, because Tyler found he understood most of what she said. He jumped a little at her shriek and laughed at himself before he ran his fingers through his hair. "Like that," he replied to her unfinished question. Taking the toast out of the toaster, he dropped half of it on each plate before offering her a plate.

"Juice or milk?" he asked. He'd scouted the fridge earlier and found a decent selection of drinks, though he hadn't heard of some of them, and he would almost swear some of them were from ... cartoons. Like Duff. But for breakfast, it was always juice or milk. That was just how he'd been raised. Granted, this wasn't breakfast time but it was breakfast food and that was close enough.
