I’m really not sure that farming is where my skills would be best put to use.

I recognize that growing your own organic vegetables is a thing that a certain subset of wealthyish white people like to do - often people who compost their own food waste, put jade eggs in weird places, and make terrariums out of repurposed light bulbs - but it’s really never spoken to me. I’m the wrong kind of white people.

I know that feeling.

What is it they say? Be careful what you wish for?

That they do. Nostalgia's one of those things we're better off without, I guess, on the whole. Some of it's all right. But then you get the kind that makes people do things like build another damn Death Star, and it all goes to hell.

What surprises me the most is just how quickly it happened.

I used to be sad for my father, when he said he was worried about it happening again. I thought - maybe he just couldn't feel safe in anything, after mom died. Maybe he just wasn't capable of feeling like things wouldn't fall apart. And I always tried, I tried really hard, to make him see that that wasn't the kind of universe he lived in, anymore. That he'd helped things change, and they were better now, and there was no reason they shouldn't stay that way.

But it turns out he was right, after all.

Learning everything I have while being here, all I keep thinking about is all the things I want the chance to do differently.

I don't think there's anything that could have helped. What they did - they'd have done it, no matter what.

I don't know if I find that infuriating, disappointing or heartbreaking.

All of those. Also terrifying, galvanizing, humbling, and - you know, the usual set of ninety-five feelings or so.
