Sibyl was getting married! She was ecstatic and over the moon. It had all happened so fast, but she needed to tell her brother, as soon as possible. Rushing up the stairs, she pushed open the doors and found him there. “James! I have the most wonderful news to share with you!”
James perked up when he heard the pitter-patter of familiar footsteps echoing up the stairwell, and he was on his feet with one hand cupping the corner of the table when his beloved sister came bursting in. He smiled at his bundle of joy, though his smile seemed a little forced, and his eyebrows rose as he followed the guiding sound of her voice, walking slowly towards her. “What is it? What have I missed?”
It was clear that Sibyl was feeling as happy and delighted as ever. “Oh James, it’s wonderful. I am getting married. To the most wonderful Dorian Gray. You remember him, don’t you?” She really couldn’t stop smiling. To be whisked away at the first sign of blossoming love was truly remarkable. Especially for someone at her lower station in life.
Well, at least one of them was elated. James’ brows furrowed and his smile faltered. Yes, he remembered Dorian Gray. Not fondly, apparently, or he might have shared in some of his sister’s joy. “But you’ve only just met,” he protested softly, reaching out and groping around for his sister’s arm, his fingertips trailing down to curl around her hand. “Sibyl I do not think it wise to rush into this hastily…”
And just like that, the look on her face fell. Sibyl frowned, looking quite confused. “Hastily? But James, nothing could be further from the truth! I know it’s only been such a short time, but I feel like I’ve known him forever. I love him, James. That has to count for something!”
“What do you know of this Dorian? What does he know of you? These upper-class folk, they live with their heads in the clouds and they have little regard for people like us. He doesn't deserve you - you deserve better.” James didn't have it in his heart to caution her that Dorian might think of her as little more than a plaything. A shiny little bauble he had chanced upon in the rough, a trinket to pass the time with, and when the novelty wore off he might lose interest in her. But he did not think that Sibyl would listen if she thought her brother's words to be too harsh to bear, so he tried to choose his words wisely.
Sibyl opened her mouth to say something, and then promptly shut it. Thinking about his question, she frowned deeply. Surely a question shouldn’t be so hard to answer. “I know that he is an admirer of the arts, and I know that he cares for me deeply. James -” She didn’t know how he could say that she deserved better. “This is the best match that I’m going to receive, don’t you know this? A girl like me does not get a chance like this twice in a row. We will grow to care for each other.”
"I'll not have any of this 'girl like me' talk. You are the most precious thing to me. You know that, don't you?" And maybe a part of him was unhappy about her being married off to a wealthy man, not being able to look after her anymore. He had always had an inclination towards being protective of her, despite his disability. Maybe one day they'll have grown so far apart that the sound of her voice wouldn't light up his world anymore. But those thoughts left almost as quickly as they came. He brought her hand to his lips and planted a chaste kiss on her delicate knuckles. "I want you to be happy, Sibyl. And I know you are, right now, with this proposal. I cannot bear for him to hurt you if you grow to resent each other instead."
She smiled a little ruefully at him. Things were going to change now. They would no longer be so close as they were now. “I know, James. Truly. I love you, more than anything or anyone else. No matter what. You’ll always be my brother.” And the one she turned to in a crisis. Sibyl could not bare the thought of him so angry at her. “I do not wish for you to be angry with me either, James. But I cannot live my life only hoping that things do not turn sour. I need to take this chance, whatever happens. Please understand.”
James breathed out a defeated sigh. He forced a tight-lipped smile and lowered her hand to her side, raising his head to face her. As unhappy as he was with this arrangement, as much as he was opposed to this relationship, there was every chance that she could have a better life if they went through with this wedding. A life he couldn’t hope to give her in his current predicament. If they had been born into a well-to-do family, things would surely be different - he might even feel more empowered to oppose this union - but this was their lot in life. There was little use sitting around bemoaning the things outside of their control. Determination burned hot and bright in James’s otherwise dull, sightless eyes as he spoke quietly, head canted to one side. “If he hurts you I’ll kill him.”
Deep down she knew that this was the only way that she would do better in life. That she wouldn’t be such a burden to him, unmarried or even married to a man of lower station. This was her one opportunity, and she needed to go through with it. She was just glad that she had gotten through to him. The last thing she wanted was to make things more difficult for the only family that cared about her. “I know,” she answered back with a smile and a kiss to his cheek. “Thank you. I promise to be careful.” If only she was a little more careful than she set out to be.
