Yes, he was fully expecting to surprise himself. In that walking into walls and tripping over inanimate objects kind of way. Matthew simply nodded in a way that seemed like he wasn't entirely convinced.

He used to be able to taste everything in a dish. He wasn't sure how anything would taste like now. It was enough to put him off wanting to eat.
