Alright, Lucy. Breathe.

Greetings. I am the Director Lucretia. I don't believe anyone else who I may know is here, and that concerns me, given the work I was pulled away from. If they fail I'll know about it, though Given that there does not appear to be much that I can do to return home, I think that it would be best to find some way to put myself to work in this world. I have knowledge to share and stories to tell. I know several languages, primarily Common, Elvish, and Dwarvish, though my Mongoose is still fairly good. You just can't forget Mongoose once you learn it. Without a Voidfish, anyway. That was a poor joke. None of you would get it anyway If nothing else, I am a listening ear. I just would like something to do.

In exchange, I would like to ask some information of my own, to supplement what I've been told already. I don't quite understand much of what is being asked of me, and I prefer to know everything that I can know.

Mongoose?

... I may know a little Elvish. Tolkien.

A bit of a lengthy story, but I at one point ended up in a world entirely populated by animals, who had a language of a sort. A friend learned to talk to the mongooses and taught the rest of us. It's been a while but I try to keep in practice with it. It's a fun conversation starter, if nothing else. A big hit at the office Candlenights party.

I'm afraid I'm not familiar with 'Tolkien' Elvish, though I would be interested in learning. What sort of elves taught it to you?

Do they really hate snakes or has taxidermy lied to me?

Oh, he's an author. His elves are tall, lithe, and pointy eared.

Most of the animals in that world were amicable with each other. It was actually quite nice. I've yet to encounter another mongoose in the wild, but I'll be sure to ask them if I do.

Pointy eared, yes. Everything else tended to vary, but you could rely on the pointy ears. So he did not actually know the elves?

You might find one here, who knows?

No, he just wrote stories about them. Elves don't actually exist where he and I came from.

I wasn't aware there were any animals in this compound? It seems a bit too sterile of an environment, from what I've seen.

What sort of creatures do exist, then? I've been to many worlds, and all of them are so different from each other. I'm very interested in those differences, if you wouldn't mind telling me. Do you mind if I write this down?

Not in the compound, but on one of our trips.

You can write down whatever you want! I'd be glad to tell you. We just have humans where I come from, along with lots of animals and insects.

I've heard about these...'trips' as you call them. They certainly sound interesting.

Well if the invitation is open, I'll be sure to. I was a biographer a long time ago, it's almost instinct by this point. I can't imagine a world with only humans, it seems...boring, if I'm being honest.

We'll probably be going on one soon.

We do have superpowered folk. Experiments gone wrong. Or right, in some cases.

What makes you say that?

Are human subjects common where you're from?

We don't stay long in the compound.

Not really.

They seem to put an awful lot of work into making this place livable if they don't intend to keep us here very long. I'm not complaining, I'm rather fond of the amenities myself. It just seems very strange. Where do they usually send us?

That's comforting to know. Do you have any knowledge of what these experiments might entail? I apologize if this is insensitive but I was part of a scientific mission many years ago, so I have a bit of a soft spot for the sciences.

I've only been here a short time. They sent us to London during the war and played a game of Clue-- Who Murdered Who kind of deal. The "killed" people were kept in a room together, trying to get out by finding clues.

I don't, I'm sorry. I'm a scientist myself and I'm also curious.

People die in the simulations? People just mentioned the Pokemon animals. I suppose it's comforting to know that if something were to happen to us it wouldn't be exceptionally dire.

I understand. I imagine not everyone would be privy to the details. I suppose it's actually a bit more comfortable for me to know that you weren't involved in those sorts of experiments.

As far as I know, we don't really die. We're just isolated. There have been people who disappeared and haven't come back yet, but maybe they were just dropped from the program.

I would never do experiments like this.

That's comforting. Both of them. I've done some terrible things before but, despite that, I don't think that I'm very comfortable with other people doing terrible things.

Which is your favorite language?

What...is a pokemon?

Probably the Mongoose, it has many fond memories attached to it, although Elvish is beautiful. And the utility of Common cannot be discounted, and Dwarvish has its own particular cadence, and... I'll stop there. I doubt that it's quite as interesting to anyone else.

Did it take you really long to learn all of them?

Oh my. What an interesting creature. What will he be when he grows up?

A very, very long time, yes. There have been times in my life where I've had nothing but time, so learning filled the void.

The mongooses of that world did, as did the other animals. I haven't encountered any more that do, though. Or if I did, they either ignored me, or my accent was so bad that they couldn't understand.

It's an interesting thought, if animals have language of their own and we just cannot understand because they cannot vocalize their thoughts. Common was fairly standard in my world, though of course you had to know how to speak it to start with.

They always seemed like the sort of slippery little shits who'd pretend they didn't understand you. Like little fox snakes.

You have a point. Certainly I've encountered races throughout the galaxy who struggled with mutual comprehension simply because they evolved differently than humanoids. They couldn't replicate our sounds, nor we theirs. And when you can't replicate it, it's rather difficult to pick it out. Sort of like how we recognize traits of human faces as distinct to one human, but can't generally do the same for two equally distinct cats.

That's certainly an evocative image. I just haven't been able to spend much time with animals in the last several years. Perhaps I'll find some here who I can share a conversation with.

I've been fortunate that in my travels, most of the beings that I've encountered have spoken Common, and the ones that haven't have been able to teach me their language. It is interesting, though, you're right; I've never put much thought to the fact of human faces. Or, elf or dwarf or orc or dragonborn faces, either.

A pleasure to meet you, Director Carter, though I wish the circumstances were better.

I'm afraid I don't understand much of what is going on. The purpose of these 'squads', for example. And I'm confused as to my overall purpose here. I must confess, I'm not a woman who likes to be without purpose.

A pleasure to meet you.

There's rather a lot to tell. More if I had my books, of course, but I've had a long time to get to know many people and cultures. The mongooses are probably the easiest, I've only met them the once.

That's alright, I understand it can be quite hard to explain things if you do not have examples or are a part of the culture itself.

But the mongooses were fantastic and fascinating. I...might go on a bit too long if allowed, unfortunately.

I don't mind talking about it at all. It's been a long time since I've even been able to. Which is technically my bad, but it's still been limiting.

I'm glad you think so. I usually listen so it is a bit strange to talk, but I've been...lonely, I suppose. Again, my fault.
