Who: Remus and Xiang
What: Tea and talking
When: The evening of the 3rd
Where: Outside the Ravenclaw common room, at least to start with.
Rating: SFW
Status: Incomplete

She'd been sitting outside while she talked to Remus on the journals, so as soon as they'd agreed that she needed tea, she'd set off for the Ravenclaw tower. The fact that the question at the door took her almost a minute to answer properly made her even surer that she needed it. She'd worked herself up into a hell of a state, thinking about everything that had happened this summer. It was kind of embarrassing.

By the time she'd got the tea out and set it brewing, though, she was already feeling calmer. Levitating the two steaming mugs with one hand and carrying her teapot in the other, she started back down to the common room, looking around to check whether Remus hadn't already found his way in (he was logical enough that she'd never had many doubts about his ability to get past the knocker on the door) before she headed to the door.

Remus didn't stop himself from laughing at that. "Right and you're even smarter than me. I was going to ask what you had planned," he flashed her a grin. "I just don't know. Experimental Charms? Auror, a simple bookshop clerk, teaching." They all sounded equally good and well - even becoming a healer didn't sound bad. But it wasn't just up to him.

She grinned back, shaking her head. "I've been trying to think about it all summer. Does that make me pathetic? I'd go for pro Quidditch if I thought I was ever going to be good enough for that..."

"Of course not. Who isn't thinking about it?" Besides all of his best friends, probably. "I'm sure you could do just fine. If that's what you want, you have to give it your all and at least try your best, right? There's no point in wasting what time we have doing something you really don't love."

"It's not what I really want." Xiang shrugged, looking down at her tea and wondering idly whether that was what was making her admit these things. She definitely felt relaxed, relaxed enough not to care what people thought of her, which was practically a first. "I want to be a writer. But I'm all kinds of terrible at that."

Finally they were making progress and Remus led the way outside, their destination just ahead of them and all around. Now they could go anywhere and he slowed down, allowing Xiang to pick a spot as he sipped contently. "I highly doubt that. Not that I would know since you won't let me read anything, but I bet you're terrific. You should try for that if it's what you really want." His eyes were almost sad as he spoke, hating the thought of her just giving up.

She smiled faintly, heading for a sunny patch right out by the lake, and looked up at him with a shrug. "Even if I wasn't, it's not what you'd call a steady career, is it? Maybe something I could do on the side, but... maybe I could do something in Muggle relations, that would be fun."

The sun was nice, only it added an extra warmth to the tea that indoors didn't really have. Regardless, Remus drank the last bit of tea he had and took a seat in the grass, leaving his eyes to watch the water as he laughed quietly. "Unless you're brilliant. It seems that you were right. You have no idea what you want to do." He was teasing her, but he couldn't help it.

She blushed, sitting down next to him, and put her mug down so she could put her face in her hands, laughing. "I know, I know. I should really have worked it out by now. I don't even have a vague idea, and it's my last year!"

"Oh bollocks," he said, impersonating someone older as he made an exasperated noise, then joined her in laughing. "I don't think anyone really knows what they want to do, you know? And who knows what we'll have to do."

Xiang looked up, shaking her head. "O! that a man might know the end of this day's business ere it come!" she declaimed, with another little laugh. "As always, the Bard knows his stuff..."

Remus grinned appreciatively and nodded. "Anyway, I doubt you'll have a problem finding a job, no matter what you decide to do. You overwork yourself, you're really intelligent, can quote any line from Shakespeare. You even play a sport. What can't you do?"

Xiang blushed, ducking her head so her hair shaded her face. "A lot of things. Most things. I mean, I'm not really the best at anything, am I? Like... look at you. You're at least as smart as me, and you're a way nicer person. People skills, that's what I can't do."

"Most people aren't the best at something," Remus mused as he bit on his lower lip. "But you're so good at so many things. I'm...not that nice. And you've got people skills, don't act like you don't." At that, he raised an eyebrow.

Xiang laughed slightly, shaking her head. "Not that nice? Liar. You're the nicest person I know. And I don't, not really. Less people skills, more acting skills." She shook her head, pulling a face. "I vote we pull out of this before it turns into an I'm-worse-than-you contest."

"You must not know that many people..." Remus' voice was steadily growing more serious but he forced a chuckle at her idea. "Maybe you're right. But really, what's the difference between having people skills and having acting skills? Sometimes that's all it is."

"It's the difference between liking people and just wanting people to like you." Xiang shrugged one shoulder, finishing off her tea. "I'm very good at the latter. Not so much at the former."

"You don't actually like people?" Remus questioned with his head slightly angled to the side, finding that hard to believe. Not that he found any harm in wanting to be liked. "But I get that, just wanting to be liked."

"Some people." She shrugged. "I like Ye-Ye and my parents. I like you, too, actually. And a few others here, and two or three in Glasgow. But not many."

"I don't see a problem with that," he gave her a smile. "Sometimes people just have close friends and don't really like the superficial interactions. If you can charm people, though, that counts as people skills."

"Yeah, I suppose so, I just..." She shrugged. "I'm a snob. I know I'm a snob. I try not to be, but I'm always finding the flaws in people."

"Oh." Remus' face fell for a few seconds as he thought that over, wondering how far those opinions stretched. He knew it had a great deal to do with intelligence, but did it encompass other things as well? "There are plenty of...private jobs?"

She shook her head, rubbing the bridge of her nose. "It's not important. Really, it's not. I'm jealous of people who aren't bitches, that's all I mean."

Remus all but spluttered at that, thinking she was kind of ridiculous. "Bitches? You think you're a bitch?"

"Sometimes," she admitted, with a wry little smile, looking out over the lake thoughtfully. "Ignore me, though. I know you think it's silly. It is silly."

"It really is," he gave her another smile since she was at least admitting it to herself. Reaching over to pat her on the knee, he said, "You're not a bitch, okay?"
