You know those ever-so-handy hunches where you feel like your whole life is about to take a change for the worse? The ones that tell you to duck, cover and pray that the shitstorm isn't as bad as you think it's going to be? Yeah. Kris Holloway sure could have used one of those right then.
No, he didn't get one. As a matter of fact he'd started the day relatively averagely; he did a system check for the safehouse electricity system and then gathered his things to go to the roof and clean off the solar panels, since it had snowed the night before. The only hint that he'd gotten to anything being amiss was the constant feeling of being watched. But that was easily explained away by the fact that this was Grand Central, and people were nosy. Being watched was less concerning than not being watched. At least that was how he saw it.
Kris was relatively detached from all the drama going around the city. Yes, the Liberty attack was unfortunate. And the vigilante tendencies of that Stone guy were kind of stupid, but Kris was pretty distant from all of it. There wasn't much he could do at Liberty; maybe when everything was done cleaning up the mess he'd go back and install some kind of security.
So, he stayed where he knew he could be of use. After all, he was nearly finished making his new-old computer usable, since he was relatively certain that he'd never get Betsy back. And once he did that, it was back to work on new features for the intranet.
But for now, he tugged his jacket on and headed to the roof. Letting the door slide closed behind him, his second tip that something was amiss should have been the fact that he didn't hear the telltale click of the very loud Grand Central roof door closing. But he was too focused on his task for that to matter.
