There were many things that could be said about Evan Marchand, and a large number of them weren't that good. He was good at pissing people off, sometimes he embodied the arrogant Frenchman that most Americans made fun of, or that he was impatient with idiocy. Many, many negative things could be said.
But, he was realizing, there were just as many positives. He was a good leader. No, he wasn't a tactician but he knew who the tacticians were. When he'd put together the groups for this expedition, he'd scoured the forums for indication of what people were good at... he'd even gone so far as to ask around. And he felt like they were relatively well-balanced. He also hoped that Stone and Rivers could put their hatred for one another aside and actually not kill one another while they were down there. If they did... well, he was sure he'd have to deal with the rage of the remaining Stones for one reason or another.
The thought of the Stone family made him scan the area for Leah, wondering if she'd had a last minute change of heart and decided to show up, but he didn't see her.
While he stood in front of the group—lager than he thought it would be, he couldn't help but notice—he tried to think of an appropriate psyche up speech. It had to be the right combination of confidence-giving and warning. He took a deep breath, ignoring the shrill cold of the January afternoon air.
"I know we all have our theories about what's happening down there, and I'm sure they're scaring the hell out of you, whether you admit it or not. But the fact of the matter is? We don't know what's down there. No idea. It could be nothing, but I'm not going to pretend that it couldn't be a disaster area. I advise you not to attack unless you have to. And to stick together and watch out for your fellow group members." His eyes went to Stone and Rivers on that one. "I'd rather we all came out of this alive. I've passed out maps to one member of each group, mapping the course that group is to take... and remember, if worse comes to worse, it is definitely okay to run."
He gathered the crowbar he'd procured and used it to open the manhole cover.
"Let's get this over with."
