WHO: Rae and Silas
WHAT: A break-in! Onoez!
WHERE: Silas' place.
WHEN: April 22nd ;; nighttime
RATING: Medium?

Rae was inherently bad at doing nothing. When it came to doing nothing, her mind wandered too much and she found herself thinking of things she didn't want to think about. Internally, she found herself thinking about how different she was now than a year ago. How hard it had been to pull herself back up onto her feet, and how she was happy now... even if it was a different kind of happy.

Was it a better kind of happy than he'd had a year ago? It was hard to say. But as she turned and looked at Topher where he slept, the warm feeling that bubbled up in her chest was... well... it was hard to identify. It was both the same and different than the love she'd felt for Elliot. She chewed on her lip. Why did she always think of this type of stuff at the worst possible times? Not that it really mattered now. All the time she spent doing nothing all day made it hard to sleep at night, and this was making it worse.

She shook her head and curled into Topher a little bit tighter, closing her eyes and trying again to fall asleep.

As she leaned against him, she breathed slowly, and against her will, her mind found itself wandering to the current situation with the guy creeping outside of the apartment. It seemed like every time she let her guard down, he showed himself. Or... sort of showed himself, anyway.

So, then why was she having such a hard time keeping her eyes open? Topher was sleeping. Some well-deserved sleep. She needed to stay vigilant. I need to stay awake... just in case... she turned her attention toward EJ for a moment, as he slept peacefully, and before Rae even had a chance to envy him, she found herself drifting off into sleep.

Which was a shame, because if she'd been fully awake, she'd have heard the sound of the metal of a lockpick scraping in the door.

If Rae had trouble getting to sleep Silas was almost the opposite. His body was less worn out than it had been, but he still didn’t have any trouble nodding off once his head hit the pillow. Maybe he should have been more alert with the stranger that had been skulking around their place, but he was confident that nothing was going to happen, or if something did he could handle it. The door was locked too, and yeah, that wasn’t foolproof, but they would have to be stupidly brave or just fucking stupid to pick the lock while he and Rae were sleeping.

He stirred a little when Rae finally settled, tightening his own grip on her in his sleep and snuffling a little. And maybe it was because of that that he stirred again when he heard footfalls in the room. He’d never been a light sleeper, but Rae’s shifting around had kept him from sleeping too deeply. Initially his brain supplied that it was just Rae, probably getting up for something because she couldn’t sleep, but then his thoughts corrected themselves with the knowledge that Rae was still right beside him in the bed.

But if it wasn’t Rae then it was someone else, and that was like a bucket of cold water over his head. What the hell?, he thought, waffling back and forth between moving Rae and potentially frightening her or waiting for his eyes to adjust to the dark to better see what their unwelcome guest was doing.

In the end he chose to fake sleep a little longer, letting his eyes adjust before he started to slowly shift Rae away from him so he could slide out of the bed.

“What the hell do you think you’re doing?” he demanded of the trespasser, his brain registered the fact that the stranger was too close to EJ’s bed/bassinet for his comfort. It wasn’t even conscious decision, but Silas cleared the space between him and their unwelcome guest in record time and tried to get a grasp on him, no longer concentrated on staying quiet for Rae’s sake.

“Answer my fucking question,” he growled, fists balled into the fabric of the trespassers shirt. It was still too dark in the room to clearly make out features, and Silas was seeing enough red anyways that he probably wouldn’t have registered them anyways.

In what seemed like a second, Rae went from almost asleep to shocked into wakefulness. She blinked the impending sleep out of her eyes and stared as Topher crossed the room in a couple of strides. And when her eyes met with a stranger on the other side of the room, the situation dawned on her. Someone was here. And they had passed right over Rae and Topher and gone for EJ.

Within two seconds, Rae had hurried across the bed and was looking at her son, who was still soundly sleeping. The situation had barely jarred him.

"Ah! Hey, what the fuck?!" the guy shouted, trying in futility to push back against Topher's grip.

Rae placed herself firmly between the impending melee between Topher and whoever this was, and her son, and her eyes narrowed. She listened to Topher's questions, and heard EJ make a waking-up noise behind her. She turned, reaching down and smoothing her fingers across her son's cheek to try and soothe him. "It's okay, Lilja. Sh, sh, sh..." she crooned, and then turned her head in the direction of the melee. When EJ settled a little, she moved her attention more toward the fight.

The man—at least they had the frame of a man—was wearing all black, and a ski mask. Rae could make out the smoky gray of his eyes in the moonlight, and she took a couple of steps forward, reaching up and grabbing at the ski mask he wore. "Answer the question!" she whisper-shouted, so not to alarm her son any further. "What were you trying to do to my son!?"

Whoever this man was saw fit not to answer, and Rae felt her eyes narrowing as she glowered at him. "Right now, you're very close to a busted face, so answer the question before he loses his patience anymore!" she snapped.

There was another few seconds of silence before the man spoke again. "I wasn't going to hurt him!" the guy spoke, slightly louder than Rae's own voice. EJ made a noise behind them, and Rae turned her attention to soothe him again.

"Well then what were you trying to accomplish?" she spoke quietly, but sternly, leaving no illusions as to whether this was over or not.

Silas didn’t let up his grip, and given that fact it was almost impossible for their intruder to get out of it. The super strength was coming in handy for once, he thought in the back of his head as he scowled at the man in the mask. He knew Rae was moving around behind them, but he wasn’t necessarily focused on that, he was more concerned with getting answers out of the bastard that had picked the lock.

He had to have, because Silas had locked that door himself before they’d gone to bed. It almost made him wish that he’d found one of those security chains too, or installed another lock. But he hadn’t actually thought that someone would try to get in, even if they’d had someone watching them for awhile now.

When Rae demanded that the man answer Silas’ question, Silas shook him a little to add emphasis. God, he didn’t know how Rae was keeping her voice level, because all he wanted to do was shout at the bastard and then tear him to shreds with his bare hands.

“You got no good way to answer that question,” Silas growled and pulled the man in closer, really getting in his face. “So might as well get it over with.” He didn’t believe for a second that the man hadn’t had an aim to harm them.

It was no surprise that the intruder stuttered over his words, he even looked like he had gotten paler by the second.

“I… I was just gonna,” he paused and swallowed hard, nervous. “I was sent to get blood from him,” he finally blurted out in a rush, and Silas watched his eyes dart around the room.

Why the hell would someone send a man in to get blood from EJ? Or more appropriately why would Samson, because Silas had no doubt that the bastard was behind it.

“Who sent you?” Silas growled as she shifted his grip to the man’s biceps and squeezed down unrepentantly. “Who the fuck wants blood from a kid?” Silas turned his gaze to catch Rae’s eye, trying to gauge how she took the admission, but it difficult in the dark, even with his eyes adjusting to the dimness.

The admission hadn’t helped to ebb away any of his anger either, if anything he was more tempted to tear the other man’s arms off rather than take him to security. That’s what he should do though, and he knew it. Let Stone or Jones question him, since they had more interrogation experience than Silas would ever have.

“Give me one good reason I shouldn’t fucking kill you right here,” he snarled. “Or let her do it.” Hell, if Rae wanted to, he wasn’t going to stop her. At the very least she deserved to get in a couple good shots on this guy, since he’d been after her kid.

If the situation wasn't so dire, Rae might have taken this as a ringing declaration of how important she and EJ were to Topher. And there was a tiny voice in the back of her mind, behind all the anger that was currently muddling her mind, marveling at how this proved her thought of how he'd make such an amazing father, and that he was the father, the protector, that EJ needed. But this was hardly the time to bring that up.

She watched as Silas shook the man and felt her fists clenching at her sides. This must have been what her mother always talked about; the protective instinct that came naturally with being a mother.

The man fumbled for an answer and came up with a half-assed one—Rae felt her anger spike when he said that he was going to take blood from EJ—and she stepped forward, losing control of her temper and getting in the guy's face. "Why in the hell did you want blood from my son?" she snapped, clenching her fists as she looked him straight in the eye.

He swallowed thickly and cleared his throat. "I... I don't know."

Something about his answer seemed honest, but Rae had the feeling that there was something that he wasn't saying, and that was why she didn't stop Topher growled and moved his grip. "Sent from who?" Rae's voice was still dangerous, still angry.

When he didn't answer, Rae felt her anger mounting. She knew the answer, sure, but that didn't mean that she was a hundred percent right. And that made her angry. Someone wanted blood from her son and she didn't know who. "Tell us now!" she seethed, stepping forward again and yanking the ski mask off the man's face.

"I can't," he responded, sounding desperate.

Rae didn't even think about her actions, before raising her fist and punching the man in the jaw, with all the strength that Charlie West had helped her realize. She felt her fingers pop and heard his teeth clack together harshly—she wouldn't be surprised if he cracked one—but she didn't care. "Who. Sent. You.?" she asked furiously, dangerously.

The man looked desperate, but still didn't answer, and Rae couldn't stop herself from hitting him again. EJ, alarmed by the clatter, whimpered and started crying, and Rae turned away from the man, doing the best she could do ignore the burning pain of her mending fingers as she turned to go tend to her son.

Threatening was getting them nowhere, Silas thought. Even if he silently cheered at the punches Rae threw. The bastard deserved it, and Silas had been only seconds from doing that himself.

“Answer the question,” Silas demanded, un-phased when the man spit blood and part of a tooth out.

“I don’t know,” the man repeated, this time with a lisp, like he was in pain.

For once Silas wished he had even half of the interrogation abilities that Regan and Brandon possessed, because all he really wanted to do was beat the man up until he was nothing but a bloody pulp, and hope by the end of it that he was still awake enough and broken down enough to talk.

“Are you fucking stuck on repeat?” Silas snarled then glanced away only for a second to make sure that Rae and EJ were okay. The noise was probably freaking the poor kid out. It would probably be better off if he just ended the whole interaction and let someone else on Security do the heavy lifting. Or hell, even Brooks. The man was uncannily good at getting people to spill shit.

“I, I…” the man stuttered and tried to take a step out of Silas grasp, and Silas was just done with it. They weren’t getting anywhere with him. So instead of letting the man continue to stutter and give them non-answers Silas angled an elbow up and got the man hard under the chin. Hard enough to knock him out.

He let the dead weight of their intruder slump to the floor before he turned around to Rae.

“EJ okay?” he asked, though he figured the answer would be yes. “I gotta take this fucker down to holding, and probably let Jones and Stone know what’s up. The two of you gonna be okay if I go?” He could always get Regan or Brandon to come here and retrieve the guy for him, even if it was pretty late.

Someone had broken in. Honestly, she shouldn't have been as surprised as she was, especially with how they'd been stalked these past couple of weeks. But she felt like... like she could have prevented it somehow. Or like they didn't deserve this. She disallowed herself to pay too much attention to the fight happening behind her, focusing her energy on her son instead.

Admittedly, only part of the reason why Rae had turned around had to do with checking on EJ. She felt her eyes watering up—an unfortunate side-effect of being emotional and maternal, and having someone trying to hurt her son. She breathed slowly, listening to the exchange between Topher and the intruder, and brushed her fingers along EJ's soft skin. “It's okay, Lilja. Topher won't let him hurt you.”

She heard the uncomfortable crack of bone on bone and watched EJ stop in his motions, then whimper. Lifting him from his bassinet now that her hand had mended itself, she breathed slowly and rubbed his back, trying to calm him.

Topher addressed her, and she nodded her head in response to his first question, then swallowed thickly at his second one. “I, uh...” she muttered, and then nodded her head. “I think so...” she didn't meet his eye, so that he wouldn't see the dishonesty in her words. “We should be.” When she looked back up at him, she flashed him a weak smile and let EJ lean against her shoulder.

As much as she wanted to ask him to stay, as afraid as she was, she had to let it go here. She had to think of what the right thing to do was. “Just...” she swallowed nervously and blinked back any further tears until he was gone. Until she was alone with her son. He was dealing with enough right now; the last thing he needed was her sniveling like a little kid. “Just be quick?” she asked, not crying, but desperately voiced.

Once he left, she sat on the bed with her son in her arms for a little while, thinking about everything that had transpired. Why had Samson—because she was sure that he was the one who'd sent this guy—wanted EJ's blood? What did he want to know? She looked at her son with desperately apologetic eyes and sniffled. “We're lucky that Topher was here, Lilja. We're lucky he saved us,” she whispered. “I don't know what I'd... I don't know what we'd do without him. We're lucky, you know that? No, you may not get to know your daddy, but he's...” she smiled sadly, “he's a pretty good one. He'll keep us safe.”
