Leah nodded her agreement. She did trust the medics (or at least three of them), but deep down there was some residual fear lingering from when she thought Evan was going to die. There were anxieties about being in the infirmary in general, but for the most part she was able to ignore those.
“A lot of people say that,” she said quietly, ducking her head a little. Leah knew she wasn't an idiot, but her schooling had gotten cut short. Sometimes she thought the only reason she was as well-spoken as she was now was because of Evan's influence. “I wasn't talking about me, though. I meant, like, scientists. People like you, who can do experiments and stuff like that. Find out things.”
Raising her shoulders in a shrug, she half-smiled. Most people tended to judge by appearance, whether they were aware of it or not. Only certain people were willing to fess up to it. She listened to Miah's assessments of both Jackie and Maddie. “I suppose that's true. I don't know where the Johnsons' parents are, but obviously that girl's lacking in some kind of positive guidance. It's hard to be understanding when she's causing trouble, though.” She was certainly glad Kori had never been that way. Then again, maybe Leah was simply too harsh of a judge. Likely that habit came from the fact that she'd had to practically raise herself, so goofing off and making trouble had never been part of her routine.
“Family's very important to him, yeah,” Leah responded with a nod. She let out a sigh and huffed a breath of laughter. “I shouldn't really shrug that off like I do. The majority of people around here are lucky to have one person they call family.” Even if that person wasn't a blood relative. Embarrassment made her shoulders twitch.
Leah could've easily taken Miah's remark with a negative meaning, but fortunately she caught the lightness in his tone that spoke of humor. She gave a weak smile in response. “That's not completely true. He could always get my brother or sisters to stop me. I think he appreciates it, though. I hope so, anyway.”
They were coming up on the admin building now. Leah was surprised at how easy it was chatting with someone new. For the most part, anyway. She was getting better at it, or so she hoped. “Oh look, we made it in one short trip.” Her hand was a few degrees warmer from soaking up the warmth from the food containers. “And the food's still hot, too. I think this counts as a successful trip.”
