In truth Miah could be reckless, but he was never careless. He was always aware of his surroundings and the dangers they may or may not present to him. “Kind of have to agree with you there,” he remarked honestly. “Not exactly like we’ve got medical facilities that can handle anything you throw at them,” Miah paused. “Don’t be me wrong, our medics are impressive, but they’re working with the medical version of duck tape and string when it comes to their equipment.” Or at least that’s what he thought, sure they had a couple machines like x-rays and ultrasound machines – none of which was top notch though.
Find a cure for the infection? Miah didn’t voice the thought that maybe this wasn’t curable. It would be an unpopular thought, and being a part of team science he supposed he needed to hope or think there was a cure out there – or else why were they working so hard to find one? “Yeah, knowledge is power, right?”
He nodded his head. “If a bunch of rebels are looking into doing research on the infection, you can damn well bet that the government is doing the same thing,” because the government was a lot of things, but stupid wasn’t one of them. “But who knows, maybe we’ve got brighter minds around this place than they do.” It was a thought, although he could only assume that government might have recruited some of the best of the best when the world fell.
It wasn’t and out and out question, but Miah found himself answering anyway. “You could say that,” he paused. “Did a lot of reckless things before the outbreak,” It wasn’t exactly admitting his addiction, but it wasn’t lying about it either. “And really my appearance alone tends to get judged before I even open my mouth to speak.” Tattoos, piercings and dreads – it was definitely a combination that got him attention, and not necessarily good attention.
Miah listened as Leah explained how Evan was doing, having been on the roof during the entire attack he hadn’t been entirely aware of the severity of the injures that had been incurred by those on the ground. But it was good to hear that Evan was doing well and in high spirits – losing their leader would have been a massive blow. “Sounds like he’s got a lot of things to be in high spirits about,” Or it could just be the drugs, but he kept that opinion to himself. Ducking his head for a moment, he hoped the emotion that flashed behind his eyes had been hidden from Leah. “Yeah, I did.” He answered as he lifted his head up again.
“I get that, I really do,” Hadn’t he done the same thing with Ellie when she was mourning? Putting her above his own needs. Wasn’t he still in some ways doing that? Keeping his own feelings to himself so as not to add more to her already overloaded plate. “As tiring as it all is, at the end of it all it’s rewarding, right?” Miah wasn’t about to go telling anyone that Leah admitted to being tired, it just wasn’t his way of doing things. “You know I don’t doubt that, you seem pretty determined to be self-reliant.”
