“True, I don’t have much sympathy for a person who doesn’t understand the most basic of self-preservation habits,” Granted some people just didn’t have that kind of common sense, but that didn’t mean he wasn’t going to judge them just a little bit for it. “And yeah, I realize that sounded kind of heartless.” He was getting used to being around a large number of people again, but that didn’t mean he still didn’t have his moments of blunt honesty.
Miah smiled while nodding in understanding. “Pretty sure you’re sister is a genius, period.” At least from what he could tell Lilah had to be, but he didn’t have any solid facts to back that up – just his own perception of her intelligence. He noticed the brief change in expression when the old lab was mentioned, but didn’t say anything about it – people were allowed their demons. “Yeah, better to keep the experiments as far away from the general population as possible,” less of a chance to get a repeat of what had happened before. “We do get more freedom out there, so really it’s a win-win.”
He had a feeling he might be one of the few people around this place who truly understood just how nice it was to be known for the person you currently where and not the person you used to be. Outside of Ellie not a single soul on the compound was at all aware of what his previous history was, nobody knew that he struggled on a daily basis with an addiction that would never quite leave him. “It does make things easier,” he agreed with a nod. “You never have to wonder if they’re silently judging you for the person you used to be.”
Miah appreciated the fact that Leah seemed to be tracking with what he was saying. Looking out for the people closest to you was just normal; it was human nature and everything. But an awareness of the bigger picture was important as well, after all how else were they all going to survive this? “All I can say is that I agree with you, it is irritating, but human nature is hard to break.”
Miah laughed. “Probably a wise decision,” he commented. “But you could wind up with someone like me who offers to help, even after you nearly hit me with a door.”
There was definitely a sense of relief when Leah didn’t chew his head off for inquiring about Evan. Not that he expected that or anything, but some people could get funny about personal questions like that. “Oh really? He must be doing pretty good if they let him out early,” Miah commented, not particularly surprised by the fact. The medics knew what they were doing and Leah seemed more than capable to take care of Evan. “It’s not really the same, but I understand that desire to be there and taking care of someone.” He’d done pretty much exactly that when he had first shown up and Ellie had been a wreck because of the ‘death’ of David. “Right, you’re eating for two,” He didn’t particularly have an opinion on people bringing kids into this world – it wasn’t his place to judge. “That has to be tiring, not the whole eating for two thing, but the whole taking care of everyone while in that condition.”
