"I'm not going to do anything stupid," He reassured her. "I won't go near them unless we're provoked to do it." He couldn't promise that he wouldn't go near them at all. There was going to be a point where something would need to be done, and it was part of his responsibility to be a part of it. The only consolation was the fact that they would be in a larger number, most likely, with people who knew how to defend themselves. It wouldn't just be one or two, and he wouldn't go on his own. He didn't carry a death wish. "They didn't come after you though, so that's something." They could have very easily followed the four of them, or Rae and Bea back to the compound. Previous events already proved that they knew where the place was.
These people, whoever they were, they were messing with things that Silas didn't want them messing with. They were starting to ruffle his feathers, and that took some doing. "Not so much, no," he admitted. "But yeah, you should be fine." He hoped. She didn't act like she was carrying any residual damage, other than physical, from the attack, but who knew. He wasn't in her head, so he definitely couldn't say.
But at least Rae and Bea hadn’t let them go without a fight. As much as he didn’t like thinking about Rae anywhere near those people, they held their own. “Doubt they expected any of that.” If he didn’t know the two of them he would have underestimated what they were capable of.
And then came her deal. He’d be an ass not to agree to it. Explaining it to anyone else might be a pain, but there wasn’t any way to say they couldn’t make a deal without him feeling like a chauvinist. “Deal,” he told her. “I’ll only go out if I have to.” And hope that Brandon or Reagan didn’t ask about it. He knew Reg wouldn’t hold it against him, but Brandon might.
He still held to some of thing things he’d said before about there being people who were better equipped to be outside the walls, people who had less to lose than Rae. But he had also started to take into account the fact that Rae was capable, maybe not of everything, but more than he’d given her credit for. A lot of his desire to keep her from going out unless she really had to was selfish also. If she wasn’t out there she was safer. He didn’t have to worry about whether or not she’d come back alive. But she also had enough pride that if he kept harping at his points, they would just keep going in circles.
“I don’t think anyone expects you to rely on them, but…” But what? “Maybe on a couple of things you need to compromise.” As soon as he’d said the words he wished he could swallow them back up again. Hadn’t she just made a compromise for him. “That wasn’t what I meant,” he added quickly. “I’m sorry.” There he was fucking things up again.
