This had been the worst week of her life. Yes, the fighting had stopped, but there was still a tension in the air at her apartment that made her wish, for the first time ever, that she lived alone. She had barely spoken to the twins since the argument had gone down—she'd only really talked to them today, long enough to ask them to watch EJ while she took a walk—and she still felt like a third wheel with the adults in her family. It was the first time since Lucas had come back with April, the first time since she'd started her thing with Topher, that she'd felt alone. And she hated it. Her walk was really a half-baked coverup; she'd lost track of one of her dance CD's, and the last time she remembered having it was when she'd met up with Topher in their spot a few days ago. She wanted to go up to George's studio and work off some steam, but if the CD was there, she decided that she may just do it there instead. Once she got to the building, she rushed inside to get out of the cold, whipping wind as it whirled around her. The inside of the building wasn't much warmer, but at least the wind wasn't there. She brushed some snow off of her shoulder and walked down the hall to the room they'd deemed theirs. Inside the room, she felt a little more vulnerable for some reason. She felt guilty. She was avoiding Topher before she even knew what he was going to say or do, how he was going to respond. But a part of her knew that he'd be angry, that maybe this would make him realize that she was bad luck; that Brandon was right about her being poison. She didn't want him to see her like this, but at the same time... she wanted to see him. She wanted to be with him, to feel the way she felt with him. But you can't right now, Rae. If you lose him now, you'll really be alone. Not that the alone that she was right now was much better. It was in that moment that she heard footsteps behind her, and the scraping of the door tumblers opening. Had someone seen her come in here? She turned her head and looked at the door, watching as it opened. |
