“I didn't,” Maddie replied. “I always thought he'd done something to deserve it. Like he was too nerdy for his own good or something and was being punished for it.” She shrugged. That was the logic of a preteen, though.
Initially, she was confused by the random subject change, but her frown disappeared when she realized that Caitie's thoughts had echoed hers about their old neighbor. “Me, too. Though I kinda wish we had told Zach. Sasquatch guy deserves it,” she added, using Jace's nickname for the creepy man.
“Okay...” It would still be weird. Maddie was doing her best to shove aside the awkward feelings, but it wasn't easy. This would be the closest they'd been in... well, probably since they'd known one another. She didn't think Caitie would try anything or make it weirder, and they'd probably settle down and be comfortable eventually. But it wouldn't be instant.
Such was the awkwardness of someone who'd never done something like this before.
“I don't like sleeping closest to the door, so...” She scooted to the other side of the mattress to give Caitie some room. The next internal question was which position she was supposed to sleep in. Facing Caitie, or facing the wall?
It'd be too weird facing her, she decided. And maybe it was rude, she didn't know, but she rolled over to face the wall once Caitie was in the bed. “Night,” she said, though she didn't close her eyes right away.
