“True.” Maddie rubbed absently at her shoulder, It hadn't bruised from being shoved against the wall, but the memory of the assault lingered. “Probably get strung up like the stick dude in the hangman game.” An exaggeration, naturally, but the person certainly wouldn't have it easy if people uncovered her or his identity.
Damn it, Mads. Way to say the wrong thing... She scratched distractedly at a place on her head, glancing up when Caitie finally responded. Her only reply was a weak smile, which widened at her friend's talk about taking a trip into town. Zach didn't like her going out and, honestly, since the Smashers showed up, she wasn't gung-ho about going out much either, but she still did. Because cabin fever sucked and she needed a little excitement once in a while. “Totally. And neither of us have stinky feet, so it's win/win all around.”
Caitie was her friend. There weren't that many people left in the world that she'd do just about anything for, but Caitie was one of them. Those few days they'd spent with only mattresses to sleep on had been torture because the uncarpeted floor was so cold. She was cold herself, just sitting there.
With a little grunt, she climbed back on her bed and sat there, trying to decide how to phrase what she was about to say. “Probably, yeah. I'd get sick in either place, so you've got me beat there.” She hesitated, glancing at her own bed. “There's room here, you know, if you don't want to sleep on the floor. It'd be warmer...” Heat flooded her cheeks at the suggestion. “If you want to. I mean, I'm cool with it.”
