“True.” Maddie shrugged. She hadn’t actually expected Security to do anything about the gossiper. It was mostly wishful thinking, as most things usually were with her. “Yeah, I guess. Freedom of speech and whatever. It just sucks, especially since most of the people around here probably think it’s one of our group making those posts.”
Maddie would’ve preferred to ignore the whole thing – the rumors and the sexuality questioning – but life was annoying like that. She let out a loud breath and then wrinkled her nose, turning her face away when one of the kittens rubbed against her face. She reached up to pluck cat hair off her tongue.
“Yeah, there’s like no guys around our age that I’d wanna do that with either.” Her crush on Brandon Stone was still there, lingering in the back of her mind, but nothing would ever come of that. It wasn’t always easy to ignore, but she did her best. “Except for DJ.” She frowned when she realized what she said wasn’t what she meant. “He’s close to our age, I mean. But I think he’s got some weird relationship thing with Luke’s sister, so I dunno.”
It was easier to ramble about her brother than to contemplate what this conversation was actually about. At the same time, though, Maddie didn’t want Caitie thinking she didn’t still like her or want her as a roommate. “Sucks to be us,” she contributed, so that her friend wouldn’t’ feel alone.
