Halloween held a sad significance to Rae. It had been a year ago that day, that night, since she and Elliot had their moment, the moment that Rae realized that what they had between them was real. If she'd been stuck back at her apartment, that probably would have been at the forefront of her mind, but fortunately, there was one party on the compound that wasn't completely full of alcohol. Rae had volunteered to help chaperone the kids party, keep an eye on things and make sure none of them got too carried away with the sweet treats she'd helped Kanji and Cindy put together. So far, everything was going well. It was fun; there was a game of bobbing for crab apples going on, as well as pin the tail on the donkey, and her Juno costume was a pretty big hit with some of the other adults around. The wig Bea had helped her find worked perfectly; her hair was in the perfect Juno ponytail, even if it was slightly obvious that she was wearing a wig. Though things were going perfectly so far, the fact that she was carrying almost eight extra pounds of baby as well as whatever extra weight she had put on, had her exhausted and needing more breaks than the other people chaperoning. Running her fingers through her hair (and forgetting she was wearing a wig until it started to come loose, then pulling it off and dropping it to her lap with a chuckle), she looked around the room. Everyone looked like they were having such a good time. She grabbed a small glass of punch from the table beside her and sipped it, but before she could finish, she heard rushed, thumping footsteps hurrying toward her. Devin Perkins, one of the young boys who frequented the daycare, rushed up to her with a teddy bear in his hand. “Miss Rae! Miss Rae! Look what I winned in the apple bobbing contest!” he shouted excitedly, hopped up on equal parts sugar and just a fun Halloween party. Smirking, Rae nodded her head. “A little teddy, hm? What're you gonna name him?” she asked. Emma Wilbury, another of the little daycare girls, hurried up and shook her head, stomping her feet in frustration. “He didn't win it! I did and he stoled it from me!” she put her hands on her hips and made a face at Devin. It didn't take long until the argument busted out into a full scale child fight and Rae reached over to the table beside her to gather up another toy, in hopes of breaking the fight up. “Guys, guys!” she called to the kids, but as she reached her hand out, Emma ran into it, knocking the little toy out and causing it to skitter out across the floor, landing at someone's feet on the other side of the room. |
